Not long after the rumors first began circulating that James Mangold’s upcoming Wolverine 3 would be titled, Weapon X, 20th Century Fox went ahead and registered the titles Weapon X and Wolverine: Weapon X – putting to bed another popular fan rumor that the film would bear a titular reference to the Old Man Logan comic book storyline. Although plot details have yet to be confirmed, it seems Fox has taken a keen interest in Wolverine’s time spent in the Weapon X program.
With X-Men: Apocalypse well into its theatrical run, there are already set photos emerging from the production of Wolverine 3, which marks not only the next film in the X-Men franchise, but will also supposedly be Hugh Jackman’s final performance as the eponymous clawed hero.
To help fans get hyped for Logan’s next solo outing, X-Men: Apocalypse director Bryan Singer recently posted a video to his Instagram account, featuring an enraged and shirtless Jackman decked out in his Weapon X gear and taking out a pair of gun-slinging guards. The scene was particularly memorable for Singer because he has a cameo in it, as one of the guards who is killed by Wolverine.
This video isn’t the first online glimpse of Wolverine as Weapon X. Recently Jackman’s stunt double, Alain Moussi, posted an Instagram photo from the set of Apocalypse (taken while filming Wolverine’s cameo in the film, which is part of a subplot that strongly implies Mister Sinister will have a bloody hand in Wolverine 3), featuring both men in their Weapon X headgear.
Meanwhile, the behind-the-scenes set photos from Wolverine 3 that have emerged online show Jackman sporting a gray beard and disheveled suit – which seems to corroborate the growing body of evidence that the film (taking place in the future) will draw from the Old Man Logan storyline. Delving even further into the rumor pool, another possible source for Wolverine 3 is the 2002 to 2005 Weapon X series that introduces X-23, a female close of Wolverine and, significantly, a character who is now rumored to appear in Mangold’s upcoming film.
As the rumors continue to circulate around this highly anticipated film (made all the more exciting since it marks Jackman’s farewell venture as this character), Screen Rant will continue to bring you the latest Wolverine 3 news as it breaks.
X-Men: Apocalypse is now playing in theaters. Wolverine 3 opens in U.S. theaters on March 3rd, 2017, followed by unannounced X-Men films on October 6th, 2017 (possibly Gambit), March 2nd, 2018 (possibly Deadpool 2), and June 29th, 2018 (possibly New Mutants). X-Force is also in development.
