X Men Apocalypse Movie 2016 X Men: Days of Future Past Sequel Brings Apocalypse To Theaters in 2016 [Updated]

It’s one of the craziest and most exciting weeks on record for superhero movie news. It started with the home video release of The Wolverine bringing about talk of its followup in development, followed by news that the X-Force screenplay was complete and promised big things for the future of Fox’s X-Men franchise.

Then that quickly was trumped by the Warner Bros. bomb, casting Wonder Woman in Batman vs. Superman where she will finally make her big screen debut. Then this morning came the official trailer for Sony’s The Amazing Spider-Man 2 and confirmation of a large roster of villains Sony’s cinematic universe aims to introduce. So, how do you bring back headlines towards your universe? Namedrop the biggest, baddest villain in it says Fox.

Bryan Singer, the director who brought the X-Men to life in 2000′s X-Men and its beloved sequel, returned to the franchise for X-Men: First Class where he was initially tapped to direct before being pulled out due to scheduling conflicts with Jack the Giant Slayer. He brought in Matthew Vaughn, who had previously come close to directing X-Men 3 and the first Wolverine spinoff previously, to takeover and for the next team-up in X-Men: Days of Future Past they switched positions and Singer is back in the director’s chair.

We heard rumblings that in addition to the sitting-and-waiting Deadpool script, the in-development Wolverine 3 story by James Mangold and Hugh Jackman and the just-completed screenplay for Jeff Wadlow’s X-Force, Simon Kinberg and Bryan Singer may have already been planning a direct followup to Days of Future Past, a film that would round out the First Class trilogy.

We now know what that project is, and yes, fans are finally going to see X-Men villain Apocalypse on the big screen.

Apocalypse (real name: En Sabah Nur) is an ancient mutant who hails from Egypt, the first mutant, and he wields alien technology that grant him many of his powers. The character goes hand-in-hand with time travel tales since one of the X-Men‘s greatest crossover events in Marvel Comics involves an alternate timeline where he successfully conquers the world. Where there is Apocalypse and time travel there is also the mutant known as Cable who many fans have been waiting on for years, a character we believe is a lock for the X-Force film and could be introduced or teased – like Apocalypse – in Days of Future Past.

X Men Days of Future Past Apocalypse X Men: Days of Future Past Sequel Brings Apocalypse To Theaters in 2016 [Updated]

When confirming the “Days of Future Past” title during interviews while promoting Jack the Giant Slayer, Singer went on record explaining that he, along with the writing team and Matthew Vaughn, had plans to blow open the X-Men comics library. He explained that the X-Men universe and its wide array of characters and books had enough material to practically rival what Marvel Studios was working with in The Avengers universe. X-Men: Days of Future Past would not only be introducing many new elements (like time travel) into the X-Men film universe but it would serve to “fix” many of the continuity errors of the series and relaunch the series in a sense.

During San Diego Comic-Con, rumors surfaced that Apocalypse would have some role to play in Days of Future Past and Singer responded somewhat awkwardly when asked directly. With someone messing with the timeline and Apocalypse definitely coming, the films may be drawing bits of inspiration from the Age of Apocalypse comics (the crossover mentioned above). Does that mean X-Men: The Last Stand’s Angel will return and become Archangel, a nemesis of Apocalypse? Or is actor Ben Foster too busy with his new role in Warcraft (also coming in 2016)?

The 2016 date means we can expect much of the cast to return, although judging by actor Shawn Ashmore’s Twitter response to Bryan Singer’s tweet, that may not be the case. With Days of Future Past coming next summer, the Fantastic Four reboot coming 2015 and now another X-Men coming in 2016, where does that leave X-Force and Wolverine 3 (Deadpool would come after X-Force)? Is it possible we see Fox attempt to release two X-Films per year (as Deadpool creator Rob Liefeld suggested)? How many of these will Hugh Jackman sign for? That old rumor about Jackman’s 4-picture deal makes a lot more sense now.

  1. YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  2. I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again: this is the villain I love more than Thanos. The villain I love more than Doctor Doom. The villain I love more than Venom, and I adore Venom.

And oh sweet Lord, do I ever want to see that villain on film. Complete with origin story and an actor portraying En Sabah Nur.

I want this to be good. I truly do.

    • It would be awesome if the movie started out in Egypt 5000 years ago, when he’s first ostracized from his tribe for being different.

    • Bro you are so true apocalypse is such a bad ass character i loved him in the 90`s cartoon gonna have to buy age of apocalypse i don`t want to but i have want too :)

      • one handed wolverine, GOOOOO! Age of Apocalypse was such a great line, magneto’s actor would have to change, because hes a badass in that series. And that means MY favorite villain, MR SINISTER!!

  3. Outstanding.

  4. Just have him turn around and smile in the post credits scene for Days of Future Past.

    • HA! I see what you did there. :)

    • I’ll laugh if that happened.

    • No, have him eating shawarma.

      • Wash your mouth out with….wait, what?!

    • I’m gonna ruin the fun by making a serious comment and hoping we see a post-credits set in ancient Egypt.

      • With an ancient egyptian version of shwarma.

        • Ancient Egyptian shwarma sounds delicious.

          • I’d pucker up and kiss someone’s “asp” first! Yyuucckk!!

      • hahaha that would be awesome

  5. Ohhhh yeah! So much anticipation!

  6. this is great news.

    also R.I.P. Nelson Mandela

    • R.I.P. Nelson Mandela. You will be missed.

  7. Awesomesauce!!

    • +1

    • Truly Awesometacular.

      • Awe some, awe more than some, awe quite a few actually!

  8. Finally some good news at last.

  9. I do dig Apocalypse and this is exciting. I don’t wanna be a downer but for me, I’ve not seen nothing from any X-Men movie that would make me believe they can support characters like Apocalypse or even the Sentinels. I just can’t picture them within any of those movies. Especially on a visual effects level. And how Fantastic Four factors into any of this, I have no clue. And its Fox and that alone scares me. I’m super excited for everything Marvel and Sony but with Fox its always meh to me.

    • Yeah, I see where you’re coming from. In the 13 years of X-Men movies so far, the only one I’ve enjoyed was the one that released in July 2013.

Nevertheless, expect some backlash due to Thanos, Apocalypse and maybe Darkseid appearing on screen within a few years of each other.

      • They do look a lot alike.

        • Yeah but unlike Thanos or Darkseid Apoc has more interesting personality abilities and way of speech.

    • Fox is the same as any other major movie studio, they make good movies and they make bad movies. And keep in mind, its not the studio that makes the movie, they just assemble the team that does;)

      • Yeah but its their track record for superhero movies that concerns me. In my opinion: Daredevil and Elektra sucked. Both Fantastic Four movies sucked. X-Men 1 is good but for me it doesn’t hold up. X2 is great. X3 sucks. Origins Wolverine sucks. First Class is really good but not great for me. And the Wolverine is really good minus the 3rd act. Whereas out of the Marvel Studios movies, Iron Man 2 is the only one I really consider a bad movie. And Sony, Spider-Man 3 is the only misstep.

        • Dude, that is like your opinion. kay? kay

        • I thought X-Men First Class was Waaaaaaaay better than X2.

          • Agreed. Both were solid, though.

        • Marvel Studios:

          Great:
          Iron Man

          Good:
          Avengers
          Incredible Hulk

          OK:
          Captain America
          Thor
          Thor 2

          Not Good:
          Iron Man 2

          Horrible:
          Iron Man 3

IMO. They get way too much credit.

        • When a good director is behind a movie it is much more likely to be a good movie.

Tim Story directed the Fantastic 4 movies, Mark Steven Johnson directed Daredevil and Ghost Rider and Ratner directed X-3. Not sure who directed Elektra but I’ll bet a billion dollars that person has never directed a critically acclaimed movie before;)

Blame the studio for hiring the director but blame the director for the bad movie.

    • The thing is though, that if it happened in real life it would be anything you could imagine here either. But it WOULD be. It would exist, somehow. And that’s how it would work.

It’s the same opinion I have about why I liked Reynold’s Green Lantern uniform (minus the mask & eyes). People say it looked fake, but hey – it was literally made of light (CGI), so if it was real, that’s how it would look!

So I think it would work, and if not it would mostly be a matter of wrapping our minds around it. Maybe even similarly to Avengers’ Hulk.

  10. Holy balls. Then what if they put Wolverine 2 and X-Force in 2015? Unlikey but that would be sweet!

    • They have Fantastic Four coming that year. I don’t know how they’re going to schedule the others.

  11. Wow, this is cool!!!!

  12. what the hell is happening??? Ultron, Darkseid, Apocolype, Thanos and Doomsday… all these guys are powerhouse characters that are massive threats. i am really enjoying where comic book movies are heading. and its really thanks to the avengers. that movie really has mainstreamed comic book movies

    • What about Spider-man grossing $400 million in 2002 or The Dark Knight grossing $530 million in 2008? The Avengers is another landmark and it’s nice to see these HUGE movies are being made with more frequency!

      • What about Superman, the first ever major Hollywood comic book movie?
What about Batman, the first ever comic book movie blockbuster?
What about Batman (again) for being the first comic book movie to win an Oscar?
What about X-men, the first ever comic book team up movie?
What about Heavy Metal (total guess here) the first R rated comic book movie?
What about The Dark Knight, the first ever billion dollar comic book movie?
What about Spider-Man, The highest grossing origin story ever?

Do you have a memory loss problem or something?

      • Especially in our time-line.

    • Poor Blade…

      *Rodney Dangerfield voice*

      Can’t get no respect!

      ;)

      • I could understand him ignoring Blade since he’d only be about 5 years old when it released and hasn’t really been talked about as much as it deserves to be.

I remember when it came out. Such a revelation. Although you did have the “hang on, isn’t he white in the Spider-Man cartoon, why is he black in this film?” comments around my school.

        • Really he has always been black ,who thought ?

          • Well at that time, the only comic book exposure in the UK was via 2000AD and Judge Dredd Megazine or comics such as Beavis & Butt-Head etc, at least for most of the kids in my area growing up. That’s why we relied on the cartoons to find out who characters were and in the 90s Spider-Man cartoon, Blade was white.

            • No I remember him still being black in the cartoon.

              • He was black in the cartoon. It’s just been forever so I think Dazz is mis-remembering. Or maybe Morbius’s overwhelming whiteness in the same episodes blasted out his sense of color-memory.

                • Reason they stopped making a Blade films was Snipes was in prison fyr quite awhile due to tax fraud and evasion. He recently was released and has done two awfully bad direct to dvd films .

  13. Maybe this is the X-Force movie?…..

    • It is not. Liefeld confirmed.

      • I wonder if X-Force is in a ‘wait and see’ sort of situation then. I hope they all get made!!

  14. I didn’t “The Wolverine” was all that great. I thought both of the first 2 X-Men movies are vastly over rated with bland characters and only so-so action. We all know what was up with “Last Stand”, no need to kick it anymore. I really, really enjoyed “First Class”, but the director responsable for that fun movie was shown the door.

I am going to wait and see how critics and fans of this site like “Days” before I go see it. If it is panned or only gets mediocre press, I am done with them.

Apocalypse is an amazing, deep, scary, and driven evil force. Please, please PLEASE be good, “DoFP”. I really want to be excited about the sequel. Just give me an excuse.

  15. This is good news. I just hope they pick the right person for the role and they do Apocalypse justice.

    • Wasn’t there talk of someone already in mind for Apocalypse earlier in the year with the guy providing mocap and voice work?

    • IDRIS ELBA!!!!!

      • that would be like Perfect casting, now that you mention him

      • Hmmm, not a bad suggestion….!

  16. All these powerhouses yet still no Squirrel Girl? :-(

    • That’s just nuts.

      • Cheeky aren’t you?

        • Don’t get your tail in a twist

          • She is nut`s as hell

            • She may be a little nuts but when it’s time to get to work she’s always bright-eyed and bushy-tailed

              • Oh Bullwinkle…that trick never works!!!

              • She’s “workin it” for Alvin! Stylin’, indeed!

  17. Dwayne Johnson for Apocalypse

    • NO! He’s too skinny and doesn’t have the boobs to play Apocalypse!

      • I see what you did there. Nice, lol.

      • He’s also a former model so he won’t be taken seriously. Too dark skinned, not tall enough, etc.

        • lol

      • +1,000,000,000,000

    • Dwayne Johnson is totally not the right actor for this part.

  18. SR- You guys need to do a special edition podcast next week to cover all this amazing comic book goodness.

    • It’d probably be a short one due to their minds being blown Scanners style within seconds of the podcast starting.

      • I could see that, but only for the flashbacks before he was like a cyborg- that’d I imagine would be CG like Hulk for example. But The Rock has proven his acting ability.

        • Sorry, my computer glitched and I didnt realize I replied to the wrong message. Sorry!

      • OMG Scanners reference. I love it!

    • Oh, we are btw. No review this week. News and reader questions :)

  19. Dwayne Johnson would be perfect for Apocalypse role.

    • Arockalypse!

      Good call.

      • Oh, I am trying so hard not to smile at that, but I don’t think it’s working!!

  20. They had better bring back Cyclops and Jean! I wonder if Mr. Sinister will be involved- if the movie will- AND HSOULD BE- in 2 parts. I know how I would do it but it wont be, haha. Im really stoked regardless.

    • Years ago I had it in my head … and on the site actually, that Singer would do X-Men 4 and it would have Mr. Sinister as a way to re-introduce Jean and Cyclops (him doing experiments or cloning them, etc.) and that would lead into Apocalypse.

  21. arent they fighting him in this next film? or is it just sentinels.

    • Fighting who?

If you’re talking about Apocalypse, no. Why did you think that?
(Not trolling you…genuinely wondering what made you think that was the case)

      • I thought he brought about the bad future theyre trying to prevent.

        • That is Trask, Apocalypse has nothing to do with it.

          • well he’ll just bring about a bad future in the next one, usually how xmen goes.

          • Are you sure he has NOTHING to do with it?

  22. All I know is that IDRIS ELBA is a shoe-in to play the role of Apocalypse. I’m not trying to play the race card but I stand firm on the fact that a black actor should play En Sabah Nur. I mean he is egyptian LOL! Other than that this news excites me so very much. I’m pretty sure that towards the end of DOFP, Wolverine is going to return to a future where Apocalypse is ruling the world like in Age of Apocalypse. At least that’s one possibility. I’m just super excited because if Apocalypse comes to the big screen, that means the Four Horsemen will be featured as well. This is a great step for the X-Men Film Universe and a great week for comic book films altogether!

    • I’m pretty sure Screen Rant said Omar Sy was lined up to play Apocalypse although this was mentioned back in July.

      • There was no rumor of Apocalypse coming back then, so I doubt SR said that. More likely they were talking about who they’d like to see playing him. Was that on the site or a podcast episode?

      • Who said that?

Omar Sy is Bishop. We saw him in costume as Bishop in July :)

        • Crap, I got mixed up. It was either him or that guy with the AAA initials whose name I can’t remember and won’t even try. Unless that was just a rumour, which is more likely.

And Ken, it was on an article on the site because the comments repeated the mocap/voice acting thing and some hoped he’d be freakin’ huge in size and build to tower over everyone else. I commented on that same article myself in fact.

          Otherwise, memory is hazy.

I doubt Idris would be so quick to take on roles he doesn’t find challenging now, he said as much himself in a BBC interview yesterday when he said that playing Mandela (RIP) was his peak and it’d be tough to play a role in future that doesn’t have the same kind of qualities as Mandela did.

Sounded to me like he’s decided to get a little picky with his future jobs now that he’s established enough to do so.

          • Awesome, thanks for the info.

I love Apocalypse and always wanted to see him in film. Didn’t think it would happen because the first few X-Men films were sorta nerfed (if you know what that means). I think Singer is realizing that the bigger/crazier stuff from the comics will actually fly in live-action, given the types of films that have come out lately.

    • I wonder if Idris Elba will want to take on another comic book role after playing Heimdall, who may return in Thor 3 if it happens. Also most Egyptians are more middle eastern than black, so I could see The Rock or Arnold Vosloo (Imhotep in the Mummy) as Apocalypse.

  23. I will never get burnt out by this s***.

    • Me neither!

      Bring it! All of it!

  24. Wonder if this means the X-Men of the past will be meeting up on the current timeline?

  25. wonder why singer would spill the goods years before the fact? as with marvel studios, this has become like wrestling fans eye balling the back curtain waiting on ringside interference, rather than focusing on what’s playing out in front of them.

  26. Im calling it now: Kevin Grevioux for Apocolypse

    • Good pick he is smart and big and a huge comic book fan/nerd

    • Dat voice!

    • Nice pick.

But I like Christopher Judge as Apoc. He has the look and voice.

      • Zac Effron is the only mature, rational choice for Apocalypse!

        • Tom Hanks!

  27. If they treat Apocalypse anything like they did Juggernaut in X3 this will suck. He needs to be CGI like what they did for Hulk.

  28. Bryan Singer, call Ben Foster NOW!

No way they should miss the mark with Ben now on that Warcraft movie now coming on same year.

James Marsden and Ben Foster HAVE to return!

  29. you know after these next two stories they could continue the stories with:

    House of M
    Mutant Massacre
    Divided He Stands
    Mutant Genesis
    Broodfall
    Astonishing X-Men

Then maybe continue on with (hopefully)

    Avengers vs X-Men
    Civil War
    World War Hulk

    • I would love to see avengers vs x-men storyline played out on the big screen!
