Writing about comic book film adapatations and/or new installments in extremely popular cinematic franchises can be a funny business sometimes. For example, over the past week there’s been a discussion about whether or not Jesse Eisenberg’s Lex Luthor will be folically-challenged in Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice. And now today, we find ourselves talking about a different actor in another 2016 superhero film release – namely James McAvoy in X-Men: Apocalypse – and the possibility that he will have a chrome dome in the movie.

Traditionally (or something close to it), in comic book form, Charles Xavier is already bald by the time he’s graduated from high school, as a side effect of his mutant abilities. However, in the 1960s-set X-Men: First Class, 20-something Charles (played by James McAvoy) still had a full set of hair – though that film included a joke about him eventually going bald – and then, in the ’70s-set X-Men: Days of Future Past, Charles has a shaggy unkempt duo, but his hairline had yet to recede. That probably won’t be true in the ’80s-set Apocalypse, though, as McAvoy told The Huffington Post.

“I’ll be older in this one. [And] I think I’m losing my hair finally. And, yeah, that’s kind of all I know. I got an email from the [producer/writer Simon Kinberg] who informed me he was getting dead excited about stuff, but he didn’t want to divulge anything for a couple of weeks, so I really don’t know.”

Trivial it may seem, Xavier going bald in Apocalypse could be a helpful detail, when it comes to serving the large story being told in the movie. For one, it would be a visual indicator of how much McAvoy’s Xavier has grown and changed over the course of the events in First Class and Days of Future Past – now he’s that much closer to not just being Patrick Stewart’s older and wiser Professor X, but looking the role too. That’s important too, as Charles will be facing his greatest challenge to date in the movie – one that, as McAvoy puts it, will undoubtedly be “fairly apocalyptic” in tone and scale.

Filming on Apocalypse will get underway in Spring 2015, so we’ve still got a while to go before we can expect more concrete details on the film, concerning things other than the tone and McAvoy’s hair (or lack thereof). In the meantime, be sure and let us know what you’re hoping to see in this next X-Men film installment – including, who should play the younger versions of certain mutants from the present-day X-Men movie trilogy, who could (potentially) show up at a more youthful age in Apocalypse.

X-Men: Apocalypse opens in U.S. theaters on May 27th, 2016.
