Cyclops James Marsden and Jean Grey Famke Janssen Return X Men: Apocalypse Will Feature Some Original Cast Members Too

With X-Men: Days of Future Past finally in theaters around the world, fans can finally understand what director Bryan Singer and writer-producer Simon Kinberg have been working on and talking about for the last two years. They promised to lay the groundwork for broadening out the X-Men film universe (read: take advantage of the big Marvel Comics stories), while introducing time-travel to “fix” a few things that went awry in previous franchise installments. And they succeeded, continuity issues aside.

Days of Future Past earned over $90 million domestically and over $260 million worldwide in its three-day opening, and better yet, it’s earning positive reviews among critics and fans – something the franchise and studio (Fox) very much needed after spending big bucks to use this movie to help relaunch the series, in a matter of speaking. Not only did X-Men: DOFP need to earn big money to stand up to rival comic book franchises, but it needed to bring back the positive buzz to justify the set of followups already scheduled and in development, namely X-Men: Apocalypse which already has a release date set for summer 2016.

*Warning: Spoilers ahead for X-Men: Days of Future Past and its post-credits scene*

As the title implies, the overwhelmingly powerful villain Apocalypse is set to finally make his debut in 2016 in what Kinberg describes as a “disaster” movie, a project we’ve already been told by him is even bigger than X-Men: Days of Future Past. Just like DOFP takes place 10 years after First Class, X-Men: Apocalypse skips ahead another decade and is set in the ’80s.

So, we know the bad guy, we know Singer wants to bring back Gambit and Nightcrawler, alongside younger versions of Cyclops, Jean Grey and Storm, and we know newcomer Quicksilver (a scene-stealer in Days of Future Past) is set to return with the core cast of X-Men: First Class, but there’s potentially many more familiar faces too. Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine is all but officially confirmed to return as well, as the 45 year-old poster boy expresses his hopes that X-Men: Apocalypse and the still untitled Wolverine 3 will shoot back-to-back to ease the burden on his workout regiment.

Gambit Nightcrawler X Men Movies X Men: Apocalypse Will Feature Some Original Cast Members Too

Speaking to The Daily Beast, Simon Kinberg confirms that it won’t just be the younger crew in the ’80s taking part however, hinting that we may see the original cast – or a least a segment of it – again after seeing most of the original trilogy crew return in the redefined future at the end of X-Men: Days of Future Past.

“It will focus primarily on the First Class cast, but it will certainly have some of the original cast involved, too.”

Who?! With Apocalypse stories, time travel is typically involved, as are time-travelling characters such as Bishop (played by Omar Sy in Days of Future Past) and Cable (the son of Cyclops – who now is alive again in the future). If the “old” cast is involved, that’s the most logical way of still including them and it plays into the how and why behind Apocalypse surfacing in the ’80s.

Speaking with Vulture, Kinberg adds that the plan all along for X-Men: Days of Future Past was to create a new future (another timeline) where the major characters are alive and well, namely Jean Grey and Cyclops. It’s in part to make amends for the mishandling of the all-important Dark Phoenix Saga comics in X-Men: The Last Stand.

“In that original outline, the characters that come back at the end of this movie came back. For me, the fun of this movie from when I said, ‘We should do Days of Future Past,’ was literally the scene of changing the future and Jean is going to come back and Jean and Wolverine are going to have a reunion. Mainly because I carry such guilt over X-Men: [The Last Stand]. The way we killed Jean in X3 haunts me because I love the Dark Phoenix saga so much.”

As for how Days of Future Past ends, we’ve already touched on the new future which could be used for other films down the road (X-ForceX-Men 4?) but as for what happens post-1973 in this altered universe, we see Mystique recover Wolverine’s body at the film’s conclusion too, and that’ll play into X-Men: Apocalypse.

“…But the last moment in the movie with the Mystique reveal … there’s for sure more to that. As we follow the characters in to X-Men: Apocalypse, we have to address that and make it a real thing.”

With Magneto and Mystique seemingly on their own, could we see Charles starting his school and the X-Men, Magneto starting the Brotherhood and Mystique forming her own team? What could she possibly be doing with a confused Wolverine who has no recollection of the events that took place in Days of Future Past? Will Wolverine still undergo the Weapon X procedure to get his adamantium skeleton and claws?

Lastly, Kinberg also touched on the idea of Channing Tatum playing X-Men antihero Gambit. He’s still not signed on yet but a deal is in the works and we expect him to be introduced in X-Men: Apocalypse, leading to his own spinoff. The idea here is that the studio needs new poster characters to lead and promote the series going forward after Hugh Jackman steps aside or takes more of a supporting role.

“Gambit is still in-motion and being figured out. Channing made it known that it was a character that he loved and would love to play, and all the people who work on the X-Men movies are huge fans of his, so the notion of him playing it is exciting. I’m more fascinated by anti-heroes, and Gambit is one of those. I don’t know why he wasn’t explored in the original X-Men movies. Maybe the reason why was because they wanted to focus on Rogue/Bobby or the platonic Rogue/Wolverine relationship, and maybe there were too many similarities between Wolverine and Gambit, so in order to make it a Wolverine-centric franchise they had to cut him loose.”

Going back to the days of the original trilogy when some fans clamored for the introduction of Remy LeBeau aka Gambit aka the Ragin’ Cajun, some of the creatives behind the franchise pointed towards the character being too similar to a a cross between Wolverine and Cyclops and that they didn’t have room for such a strong personality. With Wolverine potentially taking a backseat (Jackman hinting that he may or may not be done with the series after Wolverine 3) and the stakes (and seemingly, the X-Men roster size) getting larger, it’s time for Gambit to get in the spotlight.

What’s the ideal X-Men roster you’d like to see in X-Men: Apocalypse? Let us know in the comments!

  1. My Question Is This:
Why Would You Bring Channing Tatum Abroad? When Taylor Kitsch Looks, Acts, Like A
Remy Le Beau/Gambit As In (X-Men Origins: Wolverine) This Is A No Brainer! He Did A
Fantastic Job. Common People Let’s Stick With The Program. X-Men Fan Wants Character Of The Comics Books! Not Well Known Names Casting Channing Tatum Is Like Hiring Him To Play Logan/Wolverine. Everyone Know Hugh Jackman, Is Wolverine.

    (Not A Good Fit)

    • I totally agree 100%

    • I ALSO agree 100%. I thought Kitsch was the PERFECT Gambit in Origins: Wolverine. I absolutely HATE when movie studios try and stray from an actor/actress and cast someone different in the same role (i.e. Hulk series). BAD MOVE casting Tatum!

  2. I just want Brian Singer, and pretty much just Hollywood in general, to stop being such a darned racist and actually give Bishop the story line that he was robbed of in DoFP. In fact, it would be nice if most of the characters of color had more than a few paltry lines in the X-Men films, especially since the series is meant to be a metaphor for racism in the first place.

    • Uh, Roxy, you DO realize that Bishop wasn’t even IN the original Days of Future Past, right? In fact, he wasn’t created until TEN YEARS after the original comics story was published. Singer didn’t rob him of anything.

      • That may be the case for Bishop, but what you can’t say is that Storm has gotten fair treatment after how many films? We still don’t know hardly anything about her, so what’s up with that? She’s totally awesome and totally underused. I also don’t think they delve too deeply in exploring her abilities like they do with other characters or her personality either.

The best scene I think she got was with Nightcrawler on the jet in X2 when they talked about being mutants. It was great, but that being the best she’s gotten is also a shame. I do hope they get to interact if he comes back, though, but not as much as I want to see her with Wolverine!

  3. Gambit MUST be French. Half his character is meaningless if you take away his french suave and arrogance! Must must must!!!

  4. we want Rebbeca Rmujing stamos for Mystique please in the X-men films to coming back

  5. I’m glad we FINALLY got to see Quicksilver in a movie. Hopefully after seeing how incredible he was in DoFP, Fox will finally see the error of their ways. Maybe with his success, they’ll add his sister! I’m dreaming of the day they add the Scarlet Witch (and maybe even Polaris) to the X-Men roster. I’d also love to bring back Juggernaut, Jubilee, Mastermind (Jason Stryker), and maybe even Lady Deathstrike! Sunspot, Bishop and Blink would also be amazing additions- as actual roles and not just cameos. A great way to get some of these people in/back would be to use some of them as the Four Horsemen- maybe then we could even get Angel back as the Archangel!

  6. I would love to see more Storm (Halle Berry and younger version with some backstory), and I’d like to see Rebecca Romijn come back as older Mystique, especially if Nightcrawler is coming back.

    • Spot on!

  7. What about the character “Victor Creed “? Logan’s half brother

  8. I really wanted to see Rouge again! And I don’t think they should cast Channing Tatum as Remy, I mean I love the man but that’s just not the part for him.

  9. i wish the films would stay true to the comics and the original 90′s cartoon, i was really dissappointed with what they did with Rogue.
I agree with the commentor that Taylor Kitsch is/was the perfect person to play the role of Gambit.

  10. I am still waiting for the Wolverine and Storm story line where they get together, because i know it happens in the future.
BTW you guys do know that Quicksilver is Magneto’s son? [i like the way they sneakily indicated that in the film].

  11. Taylor Kitsch is a way better Gambit, Channin Tatum is doing so many stupid movies, I really don’t like him for that role.

I would like to see: Professor X, Beast, Mistiquie, Magneto, Quicksilver, Havoc, Nightcrawler, Gambit, Morph, Young Ciclops, Young Storm, Young Jean Gray, Young Angel, Psylocke, Bishop, Weapon X.

  12. I would love to see the bombshell version of Rogue flying and using super strength like the 90s cartoon. I fell inlove with that version

    • yesss!! loved her, not the stupid film version

      • If Rogue is going to help fight Apocalypse she’s going to need to absorb her extra powers. I love her character from the 90′s cartoon. She definitely needs to have a substantial part in the Apocalypse film!

    • Im really tired of people getting mad over Rogue in the xmen films, She was one of my favorite characters! I dont really care about the stupid Cartoon version

  13. I was seriously looking forward to Storm’s appearance in DOFP but she was barely in it! In the comics, when Storm was a child, her family was killed when a botched plane crashed into their home and leaving Storm trapped under the rubble. She’s an endearing, powerful, yet deeply-flawed character but she’s been nothing but a deadweight series. Why don’t they do anything with her?!

  14. When I was a young child X-Men was my favorite by young brother and I use to debate over X-Men vs DC when will they make a Movie with all characters x-men vs dc oh and channing Tatum will never be gambit if they get rid of Hugh and the old gambit I WILL NEVER GO SEE THERE MOVIES AGAIN. STAN LEE SPEAK UP TELL THEM TO STAY TRUE TO YOU AND YOUR FRIEND WORK.

  15. I don’t think that Gambit is the type of character that can be played by Channing Tatum. While he has more of a Colossus type body shape, Remy is known for being tall, lean, and muscular. His French accent is part of his character, and of course I loved his portrayal in Origins, but if they are planning on putting a new actor in the movie a anyways then it’s much more important this time that they stick to the original comics more closely (As is the current plan for the plot).

  16. This is the perfect opportunity to explore storm pasts and really show how powerful she is, but this movie will be just like all the previous movie, more story concept with less action and cheap action. I do not like the idea as Channing as Gambit but let see how he does cause they are going to give him the part no matter what. It’s about money..linking big names to the movie. The producers or casters doesn’t care about who can bring the best talent, its about who they think the audience will pay to go see the movie just because of who is in it. I do give them props for casting characters like nightcrawler, Jean, Professor, Cyclops, Wolverine, Mystique(Rebecca). All those actors did a great job staying true to who those character are. I just hope they do not make wolverine the centerfold once again..given the most important tasks. So the character i want to see are: Storm as(Queen,Goddess)really exploring her powers(check out the movie Storms. that how Xmen storm power should be displayed). Archangel is a must. Nightcrawler. Those are my three picks!

  17. Do not put Channing Tatum in the next X-Men movie because he does not fit the portrayal of Gambit. He’s way too big, and he’s not a good actor in my humble opinion. I believe Taylor Kitsch does a way better job as Gambit. He has the accent, the body type, and plus did a good job in X-Men origins. With a little more improvement he can possibly be a main star of the X-Men series that’s only if the director give him the opportunity to do so. If the director decide to give Channing Tatum the role as Gambit it will ruined the entire X-Men series and therefore prevent countless individuals from wanted to watch X-Men. So I will recommend that the director of X- Men to over think his decision with giving Tatum the opportunity to portray Gambit because as I mentioned before it will jeopardized the new X-Men movie believe it or not.

  18. Not a chance to rogue helping mutants there would be colossus or cyclops

  19. I may have an assumption that Cyclops’s (James Marsden) “Death” was in fact Time Travel as there was no body just his glasses, and that he was meant to lead The X Men of the near future after The events that were shown in X Men, X Men 2 and X Men 3 and the other fact being that if he was dead wouldn’t he be with Jean Grey in the afterlife, and that The X Men Character Apocalypse had possibly sent for him to come to the near future (hence The Time Travel) to maybe meet his future son Cable and become an leader of this “New X Men” that his son is assembling, Of which his son is The creator/head founder of as well as heading the team as well. and in regards to gambit it the original timeline Vs the revised timeline as Taylor kirsch becoming Channing Tatum is The Revised timeline “replacing” the original due the changes that “changed” the future in X Men Days of Future Past perhaps changed Gambit though an updated “transformation” into Channing Tatum but he maybe can’t remember Wolverine though (possibly amnesia) due his “changing appearance, voice and etc. Just keep In mind these are assumptions that I have made up. I would love to more Hugh Jackman as wolverine as he is an favourite of mine and he is my Number 1 fave actor. The same applies to Michael Fassbender.

    • after the events in days of future past, x-men origins Wolverine never happened. that doesn’t explain away gambit looking different, but movie studios don’t care about that. case in point: Iron Man’s James Rhodes.

Cyclops and Jean’s deaths never happened, so why try to explain them away?

  20. all the mutants for me are Inmortal so Rogue is imposible to defended the X-men team infact she is a little girl there noway that she is joineed the battle with her mutant friend so nuck it off please and Cyclops there are lots of oportunities that cyclops is alive because of everybody,s dreams and its ready for the war or battle just like Jean grey and Nightcrawler and Colossus

  21. Would like to see Morph not only could he shapeshift like Mystique but it looked like he had the powers of whoever he turned into. Awesomeness!! Also I feel they owe Jean Grey and Storm much more credit then they are giving them both on the screen. Also with the avengers doing their thing on the movie screen they are going to bring in black panther soon and he does have a child and guess with who……you guessed it Storm! Also Psylocke should’ve already been a main character and Scarlett Witch too. Rogue needs to be flying and super strong. Wolverine is cool but all these ladies powers are so much better. Nightcrawler should have been in more movies and why did they make Colussous so weak?

  22. I would love to see some story line involving Wolverine and Omega Red. Any ideas?

  23. It seems most x-men fans agree that Channing Tatum playing Gambit is a horrible pick. He’s too pretty boy, and the character of Gambit is way more rugged and mysterious. Taylor Kitsch did a great job.
Aside from that, it would be great to see Rogue finally get her powers, and maybe even an actress change because Anna Paquin is way too soft and delicate to play Rogue…who is much more hard core and a stronger character.

  24. I hope they bring back Halle Berry to play Storm and go into the storyline more with Storm and her romance with Wolverine

  25. When are they going to focus on the female characters. Storm and Phoenix are two forboding and immensely powerful women characters. Let’s see a movie line that puts them in the forefront for the x-men, forget gambitt. They’ve already made gambit too old

  26. I have no issue with wolverine being in the movie,i have always had issues with him being THE movie though..agree about tatum as gambit.
My dream list Prof X,Cyclops (the real cyclops,,not whatever the hell marsden in doing),jean grey, wolverine, beast, night crawler, collosus, bishop, gambit, kitty pryde, rogue and iceman, temporarily include angel until he leaves.scenes of future to include blink, warpath, cable, forge and sunspot.
    the brotherhood..magneto,toad,blob,pyro,avalanche,quicksilver and scarlet witch,mystigue.

and appocalypses 4 horsemen…lead by archangel as death.i dont know who you can include.im thinking for movie purposes maybe sabertooth, juggernaut (seriously imagine someone that freakin powerful cosmic, and emma.

  27. Spot on man, agree with all the roster moves – i’d like to see Pyro in the Brotherhood as well; have a nice story between he and Iceman

  28. you do realize Quicksilver was never an xman right?

  29. He was in the “Age of Apocalypse” series, which maybe where they go with the movie, which would make sense using both cast members young and old , intertwined again

  30. He’s in X-factor so doesn’t that count?

  31. Actually, though Quicksilver is shown as being in the Brotherhood mainly (in the original cartoon and such) in the comic books he was working with the X-Men for a little while. Only after that did he switch sides and join Magneto.

  32. Everybody George said is who I want except for Angel,Psylocke, and Bishop. I mean they could be in it but future versions of them cause we all know angel is rogue and icemans age in this film series and I also think Psylocke is in there age group. And sorry from what I seen in x men days of future past I believe that Bishop is the same age as storm.
