‘X-Men: Apocalypse’ Will Feature ‘Some’ Original Cast Members Too

Cyclops James Marsden and Jean Grey Famke Janssen Return X Men: Apocalypse Will Feature Some Original Cast Members Too

With X-Men: Days of Future Past finally in theaters around the world, fans can finally understand what director Bryan Singer and writer-producer Simon Kinberg have been working on and talking about for the last two years. They promised to lay the groundwork for broadening out the X-Men film universe (read: take advantage of the big Marvel Comics stories), while introducing time-travel to “fix” a few things that went awry in previous franchise installments. And they succeeded, continuity issues aside.

Days of Future Past earned over $90 million domestically and over $260 million worldwide in its three-day opening, and better yet, it’s earning positive reviews among critics and fans – something the franchise and studio (Fox) very much needed after spending big bucks to use this movie to help relaunch the series, in a matter of speaking. Not only did X-Men: DOFP need to earn big money to stand up to rival comic book franchises, but it needed to bring back the positive buzz to justify the set of followups already scheduled and in development, namely X-Men: Apocalypse which already has a release date set for summer 2016.

*Warning: Spoilers ahead for X-Men: Days of Future Past and its post-credits scene*

As the title implies, the overwhelmingly powerful villain Apocalypse is set to finally make his debut in 2016 in what Kinberg describes as a “disaster” movie, a project we’ve already been told by him is even bigger than X-Men: Days of Future Past. Just like DOFP takes place 10 years after First Class, X-Men: Apocalypse skips ahead another decade and is set in the ’80s.

So, we know the bad guy, we know Singer wants to bring back Gambit and Nightcrawler, alongside younger versions of Cyclops, Jean Grey and Storm, and we know newcomer Quicksilver (a scene-stealer in Days of Future Past) is set to return with the core cast of X-Men: First Class, but there’s potentially many more familiar faces too. Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine is all but officially confirmed to return as well, as the 45 year-old poster boy expresses his hopes that X-Men: Apocalypse and the still untitled Wolverine 3 will shoot back-to-back to ease the burden on his workout regiment.

Speaking to The Daily Beast, Simon Kinberg confirms that it won’t just be the younger crew in the ’80s taking part however, hinting that we may see the original cast – or a least a segment of it – again after seeing most of the original trilogy crew return in the redefined future at the end of X-Men: Days of Future Past.

“It will focus primarily on the First Class cast, but it will certainly have some of the original cast involved, too.”

Who?! With Apocalypse stories, time travel is typically involved, as are time-travelling characters such as Bishop (played by Omar Sy in Days of Future Past) and Cable (the son of Cyclops – who now is alive again in the future). If the “old” cast is involved, that’s the most logical way of still including them and it plays into the how and why behind Apocalypse surfacing in the ’80s.

Speaking with Vulture, Kinberg adds that the plan all along for X-Men: Days of Future Past was to create a new future (another timeline) where the major characters are alive and well, namely Jean Grey and Cyclops. It’s in part to make amends for the mishandling of the all-important Dark Phoenix Saga comics in X-Men: The Last Stand.

“In that original outline, the characters that come back at the end of this movie came back. For me, the fun of this movie from when I said, ‘We should do Days of Future Past,’ was literally the scene of changing the future and Jean is going to come back and Jean and Wolverine are going to have a reunion. Mainly because I carry such guilt over X-Men: [The Last Stand]. The way we killed Jean in X3 haunts me because I love the Dark Phoenix saga so much.”

As for how Days of Future Past ends, we’ve already touched on the new future which could be used for other films down the road (X-ForceX-Men 4?) but as for what happens post-1973 in this altered universe, we see Mystique recover Wolverine’s body at the film’s conclusion too, and that’ll play into X-Men: Apocalypse.

“…But the last moment in the movie with the Mystique reveal … there’s for sure more to that. As we follow the characters in to X-Men: Apocalypse, we have to address that and make it a real thing.”

With Magneto and Mystique seemingly on their own, could we see Charles starting his school and the X-Men, Magneto starting the Brotherhood and Mystique forming her own team? What could she possibly be doing with a confused Wolverine who has no recollection of the events that took place in Days of Future Past? Will Wolverine still undergo the Weapon X procedure to get his adamantium skeleton and claws?

Lastly, Kinberg also touched on the idea of Channing Tatum playing X-Men antihero Gambit. He’s still not signed on yet but a deal is in the works and we expect him to be introduced in X-Men: Apocalypse, leading to his own spinoff. The idea here is that the studio needs new poster characters to lead and promote the series going forward after Hugh Jackman steps aside or takes more of a supporting role.

“Gambit is still in-motion and being figured out. Channing made it known that it was a character that he loved and would love to play, and all the people who work on the X-Men movies are huge fans of his, so the notion of him playing it is exciting. I’m more fascinated by anti-heroes, and Gambit is one of those. I don’t know why he wasn’t explored in the original X-Men movies. Maybe the reason why was because they wanted to focus on Rogue/Bobby or the platonic Rogue/Wolverine relationship, and maybe there were too many similarities between Wolverine and Gambit, so in order to make it a Wolverine-centric franchise they had to cut him loose.”

Going back to the days of the original trilogy when some fans clamored for the introduction of Remy LeBeau aka Gambit aka the Ragin’ Cajun, some of the creatives behind the franchise pointed towards the character being too similar to a a cross between Wolverine and Cyclops and that they didn’t have room for such a strong personality. With Wolverine potentially taking a backseat (Jackman hinting that he may or may not be done with the series after Wolverine 3) and the stakes (and seemingly, the X-Men roster size) getting larger, it’s time for Gambit to get in the spotlight.

What’s the ideal X-Men roster you’d like to see in X-Men: Apocalypse? Let us know in the comments!

  1. Though I like Channing Tatum. Why change what already works….Taylor Kitsch was great as Gambit

  2. I for one think Taylor Kitsch started off well as Gambit, he had the laid back swagger, the demeanor & even a hint of cajun spice in his accent…but in less than 5 minutes, he was knocked out by a single elbow (at Wolverine’s strike) and miraculously seems to loose all of the “NawLins” in his accent, and begins talking like he’s from Wisconsin or something…horrible, not to mention his role was so small. Channing being from the south, and growing up with that accent, I feel he will take control of that role, besides he’s been the leading man a few times & done pretty well (GI Joe, White House Down) so if they’re looking for Jackman to pass the torch, the idea of him passing it to my personal favorite X-Men member Gambit (Tatum) I like. As far as members of the team that I would like to see (quite an extensive list, but hey, aim for the stars right?)

Gambit (fav), Nightcrawler (fav), Cable, Forge (I like the brilliant mind guys), Morph (his few story lines in the series were interesting especially the Days of Future Past plot that had Mystique posing as Gambit and assassinating the president, which is honestly where I thought they were going when they first announced that film, major blower lol), Jubilee (I like her), Havoc (in his prime, not a teenager), Psylocke (she was bad ass), Domino (I like her as well) … wouldn’t mind eventually seeing Mr Sinister & Juggy returning for future films as well.

  3. I saw no mention of Storm WHY do they keep making Wolverines movies? I mean we get it Storm has a very great story! They never do her justice in any of the movies FANS AND MYSELF WANT TO FINALLY SEE HER IN ALL HER ELEMENTAL CONTROL. Please read THIS and use STORM LIKE SHE IS SUPPOSED TO BE.

  4. Forget the guilt of Jean Grey, what about the calamity of Cyclops?

A wonderful character but treated so shoddily throughout the X Men franchise because no one had the talent or the energy to think that you could write two very different but still enjoyable male lead heroes. Hence Cyclops gets killed off and forgotten.

It’s a real tragedy and one of the best things about DOF. Please god don’t let the makers fail him again.

  5. Gambit should be played by a French guy or some that can do an accent or if you can bring Taylor kitsch back !!! The will be awesome

    • A French guy ?? What the hell are you talkingvabout ?? U clearly have no idea so don’t even bother

  6. Taylor kitsch was good as gambit

  7. Oh and I would also like to see rough back

    • sorry rogue ill be villan as horsemen of famine

  8. I love the dark phoenix saga. Was the best n the only thing I would really love is the return of miss jean grey

  9. nice i love Gambit and nightcrawler thanks for bringing them back

  10. nice i love Gambit and nightcrawler thanks for bringing them back and may be rogue, beast, iceman and -23 ill be the villans as four horsemen

  11. I want to know exactly why they don’t use Rouge as she was meant to be! Why when focusing on her writers didn’t upgrade and show how she was tricked in to stealing “carol denver’s powers thus opening the door for other characters such as Mrs marvel! Which would have a perfectly powered Rouge and easy to add to any of the teams! Yyyyyyy?? And someone needs to do some digging wolverine has never been the star of xmen! Yet one of many with awesome abilities Annnnnnnnd storylines. even great storm has also been Sabatoget by writers eager for wolverine everything!no fair ! No jubilee no morph no island of genosha no savage lands no mr sinister! And why is the storyline bouncing around and changing so much? For people who know xmen and it’s history , we’re saying what is this ? No justice for other mutant characters only wolverine and a couple of others ? And for people that don’t know xmen a false circumstances has been created! And when oh when could shadow cat ever had the power of time travel! Where was forge or cable ? That’s hard to answer since the story has been altered so much and too much ! Can we please stick mostly stick to the sto r y lineand have a breath of fresh air with some of the other original mutants and extras such as avalanche, Emma frost and her coo coos, jubilee, morph, blob, psylocke, alpha flights v indicator, puck, medicone man s asquith and Sooo many more ! We already have the characters to bring on some of the ones previously named and with everyone opening up other story lines and doorways for numerous possibilities! And yes not bringing in the dark phoenix saga messed up the idea for the entire epic space and earth battle with cyclops father and the rebels and the starjammers and many other things! As a xmen fan at the age of 5 now 31 I am very frustrated by the way they have created so many which is great but crazy and wrong for changing so much leaving out do much and downplaying so many characters! Once again on so many occasions the xmen resued wolverine and he was one of many and was part of a team! Even many of his teammates could defeat him which brings us back to the question why has he been the star in almost every movie! Wrong## team# me personally I think every xmen not mutant but xmen should have therect own stor now! It’s only fair given the last few years of wolverine madness! And this is coming from a marvel fan not just xmen! Wherect is Stanley Leiber he might onderstand!

  12. I would like to see Rogue with her powers she stole from Ms.Marvel and the way Mystique pushed her like in the comics. That would be great to see her be feisty like she should be

  13. Anyone else hate the idea of Tatum? Stick to dancing bro. Personally I don’t want to see stripper boy ruin one of my favorite characters. I’d love to see more gambit but I won’t watch if its tatum. I don’t get what everyones obsession with him is anyways.

  14. Yes seeing more on Gambit would be ummm okay, BUT it’s time to let everyone know the true story of Storm. Where she comes from how she ended up with the X-Men….ect If your a true fan of X-Men, Marvel or Comics then you should really want to see this. My friends/family and I have been talking about this for years while clinging on to the other other movies that has came out over the years but I think its high time Storm (the right hand of Charles) has her story told. Also a better actress should be picked to play the younger role of her, not that “girl” from the Aliayah movie on lifetime, not trying to be rude but hey she couldn’t cut it on cable what make people think shes ready for the big screen. Thanks :-)

  15. How could anyone entertain the idea of having anyone playing Gambit besides Taylor Kish?
He’s already played the part in origins, he’s popular, he’s awesome. Not that I don’t appreciate CT,
But he is just not the one for the part. Or did Kish just say, no?

  16. The timing would be wrong for Rogue to come back only causing them to have something else they would need to fix. Let’s see they also can’t use Angel for the same reason. If I had a choice one character I would really like to see is Forge since him and Storm had such a long relationship and they have a younger storm, even though I think Halle is Ageless I get it, playing in the new movie. Umm Banshee what happened to him? No mention in DOFP I don’t believe remembered seeing Havok briefly though. I may be wrong but wasn’t Bobby the second Iceman? So could use the first! i would definitely like to see Prof X and Moira son. However nothing would make me happier then seeing SCARLETT WITCH who is Quicksilvers twin hello and part of the Brotherhood then the avengers but yea maybe they will do that for me I don’t know!! Also a couple names here to throw in Lilandra, Starjammers led by Cyclops dad, Psylocke, Dazzler, Madelyne Pryor, Boom Boom and let’s not forget Mystiques Freedom Force or Storms Morlocks!! Just saying…lol

  17. I wish I could have seen more of rogue like when shes mature and is able to fly or that mystique is related to nightcrawler and rougue ;)

  18. I totally agree with the comments about storm. Here we have an incredible character who as a child was seen as a god to her own people in Africa before Charles found her. She has incredible powers that still have not been explored fully yet. A few lightning bolts and fog is not the storm we all know from the comics. Storm could easily take the baton from wolverine when he steps down . there is so many stories of hers that we need to see . also when you finally get back around to the time when rogue is around please can you explore her power of flight and how she ewuires it from marvel girl . I think the rogue we have seen so far has been pointless and pretty lame. Her powers have been shown as a weakness up until now so let’s see what she is really capable of.finally in apocalypse please can you introduce several completely new characters that won’t disrupt the timeline too much but will make a real wow factor on the visuals of this movie. I love to see the powers that are so visual rather than telepathy and such .

  19. Continuity craziness, an aging Wolverine, two casts of the same characters… the X-Men franchise is a mess. Singer ruined Superman and now he’s officially ruined the X-Men. He should have left the franchise when First Class was made and let that be a reboot, but no.

With any luck this franchise will go back to Marvel and maybe we’ll see Avengers vs X-Men, like in the comics. But we all know Fox is too greedy and puts money over what fans really want.

  20. Channing Tatum is not Gambit. The body frame, the demeanor and accent won’t even come close no matter how good his acting is. I don’t want another Dragonball: Evolution or other terrible hollywood marketing ideas like Tom Cruise as the Last Samurai, Brad Pit as The Mexican, and Keaneu Reeves as any sort of martial arts master. Gambit is a Cajun Thief that has potential to be an assassin. What he’s not, is a football jock who can, at best, be dressed up in military garb shouting Yo Joe!

  21. You guys should add a little guy as a mutant and call him little devil.

  22. Spot on man, agree with all the roster moves – i’d like to see Pyro in the Brotherhood as well; have a nice story between he and Iceman

  23. you do realize Quicksilver was never an xman right?

  24. He was in the “Age of Apocalypse” series, which maybe where they go with the movie, which would make sense using both cast members young and old , intertwined again

  25. He’s in X-factor so doesn’t that count?

  26. Actually, though Quicksilver is shown as being in the Brotherhood mainly (in the original cartoon and such) in the comic books he was working with the X-Men for a little while. Only after that did he switch sides and join Magneto.

  27. Quicksilver is magnetos son and as for as other characters they left out so many from the comics and played down the role of many others like storm and rogue as well as her brother night crawler. Also where is morph and jubilee

  28. Everybody George said is who I want except for Angel,Psylocke, and Bishop. I mean they could be in it but future versions of them cause we all know angel is rogue and icemans age in this film series and I also think Psylocke is in there age group. And sorry from what I seen in x men days of future past I believe that Bishop is the same age as storm.
