Twentieth Century Fox’s X-Men series will have been around for 16 years when the ninth installment of the franchise, X-Men Apocalypse, debuts in theaters next year. After the original trilogy, Fox took the series back in time with X-Men: First Class, which was followed up by last year’s X-Men Days of Future Past, a film that effectively reset the timeline of the first three movies. Next year, Fox will debut its third spinoff from the central films, Deadpool, before X-Men Apocalypse hits theaters for a late spring release.
Days of Future Past director, Bryan Singer, returned for Apocalypse, which has said to be a conclusion to the story of the characters at the center of the new trilogy: Magneto (Michael Fassbender), Professor X (James McAvoy), Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence), and Beast (Nicholas Hoult). Though footage was shown of X-Men Apocalypse at this year’s Comic-Con International in San Diego, an official trailer has yet to be released to the public. Now it seems we won’t have to wait much longer for a first look at the upcoming X-Men feature.
The official X-Men Twitter account released a motion poster (below) for X-Men Apocalypse that puts a spotlight on the team’s famous insignia, partially burned and ruined. The poster also features the film’s tagline: “Only the strong will survive.” Additionally, the account announced that the first trailer will debut online tomorrow via the 20th Century Fox YouTube channel.
We’ve known that we’d be getting a trailer sometime soon since Singer offered a tease on Instagram two weeks ago and Fox had it rated last week. However, it was believed to be released with the premiere of Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens next week – though it will probably still be attached to the new film. There has been some speculation of what would be included, but a teaser trailer recently shown at an Italian film festival seemed to indicate it would very close to, if not exactly, the same footage shown at SDCC.
The past few weeks have offered comic book fans new trailers for the two other big tentpoles of spring 2016: Marvel debuted the first Captain America: Civil War trailer to generally positive reactions, then Warner Bros. released a third full-length trailer for Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice that received mixed reactions and sparked plenty of online debate. With the release of the X-Men Apocalypse teaser, fans will have seen trailers for the three big comic book releases of the spring 2016 movie season and it remains to be seen how viewers will react to the first footage from X-Men Apocalypse. So far, buzz from fans about the next X-Men film seems to be generally positive even though they’ve yet to see any actual footage.
Still, we know quite a bit about X-Men Apocalypse from the synopsis of the film, which explains Apocalypse as the “first and most powerful mutant” who recruits other mutants like Magneto to create a new world. Plus, other tidbits like Quicksilver’s storyline and how Professor X loses his hair have been hinted at in recent weeks. Between this information and the trailer descriptions, it seems we may know more of what to expect from the trailer when it’s revealed tomorrow. But, the overall reaction from comic book fans and casual fans of the franchise alike remains to be seen until the trailer is officially unveiled.
Deadpool opens in theaters February 12, 2016; X-Men: Apocalypse on May 27, 2016; Gambit sometime in 2017; Wolverine 3 on March 3, 2017; and an unannounced X-Men film on July 13, 2018. The New Mutants is also in development.
