With over a month remaining until its release, this spring’s third major superhero film, X-Men: Apocalypse is slowly rolling out the heavy artillery. 20th Century Fox recently released a pair of viral videos featuring Apocalypse’s origins and a commercial featuring Quicksilver. But aside from a few posters and teasers sprinkled throughout the past few months, there hasn’t been much in the way of new images or info on Professor X’s crew.
But all that is set to change as the latest news brings a gorgeous new still from the film, as well as the promise of something larger on the horizon.
EW, as part of their summer movie preview, released an intense new shot of Jean Grey (Sophie Turner) and Scott Summers (Tye Sheridan). The production still presumably shows Grey using her immense psychokinetic powers to focus Cyclops’ optical beams on an unknown target (possibly Alexandra Shipp’s Storm?). Although the issue isn’t forthcoming with any of the sought-after plot details, it does reveal that Sheridan (and likely his fellow co-stars) are signed on for two more X-Men films. Check out the lovely still below:
The bigger announcement is that fans can look forward to a brand new trailer sometime soon. The news comes from CBM, who report that the British Board of Film Classification put their stamp of approval on a trailer for the upcoming film. Listed at about two and a half minutes, the trailer was passed through without being cut. As of yet, there are no details on exactly when we’ll catch another glimpse of the forthcoming X-Men entry, but it’s reasonable to assume it could arrive alongside Marvel juggernaut Captain America: Civil War on May 6, or possibly sooner.
Recent speculation centered around another reveal in the next X-Men: Apocalypse trailer, that of wayward fan favorite, Wolverine. The adamantium-enhanced brawler has played a role in every X-Men endeavor since the beginning of the franchise. Wolverine’s absence from the trailers has been worrisome for fans – especially after his watery body was recovered by Mystique at the end of Days of Future Past. With such a major question mark dangling in the air, it would be cruel to leave fans in the dark.
Hopefully, the arrival of a new trailer will shed light on the Logan mystery, as well as give fans more insight into the upcoming First Class Trilogy-closer. And with a new era of X-Men to follow, as well as New Mutants to explore, X-Men: Apocalypse needs to deliver on its promise to go “cosmic.” A killer trailer situated around Civil War’s release could really kick off the excitement for the next superhero bash.
X-Men: Apocalypse opens in theaters May 27, 2016, followed by Wolverine 3 on March 3rd, 2017, and unannounced X-Men films on October 6th, 2017 (possibly Gambit), January 12th, 2018 (possibly Deadpool 2), and July 13th, 2018. The New Mutants is also in development.
