After the original X-Men trilogy at 20th Century Fox was rebooted with the prequel film X-Men: First Class, X-Men: Days of Future Past was tasked with connecting the storylines – which the time-traveling movie largely did by rewriting the timeline of the original trilogy. As a result, the upcoming X-Men: Apocalypse will feature younger versions of many iconic X-Men characters that appeared in previous films.
While younger iterations of Professor X (James McAvoy), Magneto (Michael Fassbender), and Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence) have starred in the prequel trilogy, they’ll be joined in X-Men: Apocalypse by Jean Grey (Sophie Turner), Cyclops (Tye Sheridan), Storm (Alexandra Shipp), Nightcrawler (Kodi Smit-McPhee), and Angel (Ben Hardy) among others. Though these returning and new heroes and villains have been heavily featured in the posters and trailers leading up to the release of X-Men: Apocalypse, we now have our first look at another new take on a mutant character from the Marvel Comics.
X-Men: Apocalypse director Bryan Singer teased the appearance of another mutant character on Instagram, revealing a photo of Angel in a fighting cage with The Blob. The caption of the photo reads, “Mutant Martial Arts. Light as a feather.” Check out the new image:
The Blob previously appeared in Fox’s X-Men universe being portrayed by Kevin Durand in X-Men Origins: Wolverine. In the case of X-Men: Apocalypse, a previous report from the set seemed to confirm the appearance of The Blob in the film, though it was unclear how much or in what capacity he would appear. In the comics, The Blob typically has superhuman strength and endurance, while his skin is nearly impenetrable. Additionally, he usually appears as a bully or villain.
Certainly, in the photo released by Singer, The Blob seems to be a regular of the cage fighting ring, perhaps even a reigning champion – that is, if the mutant’s scars are any indication. But, as is obvious from the characters’ positioning, it seems Angel has bested The Blob in a fight. It should also be noted that Angel doesn’t appear to have yet made the transition into Archangel, likely indicating this image is from the character’s time before meeting Apocalypse (Oscar Isaac) and becoming one of the ancient mutant’s Four Horseman.
However, though The Blob may be a part of Angel’s storyline in X-Men: Apocalypse, it’s most likely he’ll be relegated to a cameo appearance – with mainly X-Men film and comic fans recognizing the character. Certainly, with the large cast of mutant characters, both new and old, already set to be featured in X-Men: Apocalypse, that may be for the best. But, it will provide a fun nod for fans of both the X-Men film universe and the comic book character of The Blob.
X-Men: Apocalypse opens in theaters May 27, 2016, followed by Wolverine 3 on March 3rd, 2017, and unannounced X-Men films on October 6th, 2017 (possibly Gambit), January 12th, 2018 (possibly Deadpool 2), and July 13th, 2018. The New Mutants is also in development.
