Drew Goddard's X-Force may start filming as soon as next year, according to star Josh Brolin. With a bit of experience already under his belt as Cable, Brolin is only at the beginning of this character's journey. He's set to debut in Deadpool 2 and recently wrapped filming on his X-Men introduction, but just how big of a role the time traveling mutant will have remains unclear. Still, even a smaller role would be but a jumping off point for Cable, before he eventually moves to his rightful place as the co-leader of X-Force.

X-Force is one of the several X-Men spinoffs that 20th Century Fox is currently developing, along with Gambit and Deadpool 3. While the studio already has other spinoffs ready to hit theaters first, X-Force is a priority for the studio. It was announced that Drew Goddard will write and direct the film not too long ago - and, as it turns out, it may not be too long before Goddard rolls camera.

Brolin spoke to Collider about his new role in the X-Men universe, and more specifically about his future as Cable. He's already expressed how excited he is to move forward with three additional appearances as Cable, one of which will be in X-Force. Although he's not yet made his debut as the character, the plans for Brolin's second appearance as Cable are moving along faster than expected. Per Brolin:

I think [X-Force films] sometime next year or soon thereafter. It depends. It all depends. It depends on how Deadpool 2 does, but I don’t think that’s a make or break kind of deal. Drew Goddard is already involved in it. He’s into it now. I know he and Ryan were meeting. I’ve met him once, and so this is all kind of going ahead. How it goes ahead, I know that they’re preparing, and I know that it’s something that I’m set to do. When it happens they’re going to put it as fast as they can. I think Drew Goddard is doing his movie right now and then once he’s kind of wrapped up with that and this movie comes out I think we’ll be ready to start the other one.

The other movie Brolin is referring to is Goddard's Bad Times at El Royale starring Jeff Bridges and Chris Hemsworth. With that movie currently filming and the studio still waiting to see just how well Deadpool 2 does, it may not be until later in 2018 before X-Force gets moving. Even if that is the best case scenario, it does not appear as though the studio will rush it into production - as Brolin also hints that X-Force may not begin filming until 2019.

Based on these filming schedules and Fox's X-Men slate, X-Force will likely not hit theaters before the middle of 2019. Gambit appears to be the priority right now, with location scouting now taking place and production looking to begin early next year, ahead of its February 2019 release. With X-Men: Dark Phoenix being described as a two-parter, the studio could also have a secret main installment in the X-Men franchise lined up for 2019. X-Force could potentially be the third X-Men film of that year - hitting theaters roughly a year after Deadpool 2 - or the studio may look to give it more time to develop and wait until 2020 to bring Brolin back as Cable.
