xfiles Rumor Patrol: X Files 3 Moving Forward?

X-Files News (can’t believe that’s actually a site) recently nabbed a jewel during their world-spanning watch of all things X-Files: quotes from Gillian Anderson at a Sarajevo film festival that basically allude to the fact that she would be willing to return for a third X-Files movie and (that in fact) there is one currently in the planning stages, with 2012 mentioned as a possible production or release date (details are unclear).

If you’re suddenly thinking to yourself, “Another X-Files flick? WTH???” Then my friend, you are not alone.

Ok, so there’s been some issue regarding the exact quote that came from Anderson’s (lovely) lips, but here are the two translations that X-Files News has managed to obtain from the foreign correspondents who covered the festival:

Translation 1: “The third movie, according to her, is in early stages and should be filmed by 2012!”

Translation 2: “The new XF-movie is, by her knowledge in preparation and should be filmed during 2012.”

So… Two statements that point to the same event (X-Files 3) with very different interpretations of the where/when. Great.

Stateside, we thankfully have Bloody-Disgusting to help sift through the rumors: the horror site backs up our earlier reports that there has in fact been at least talk of doing X-Files 3, ever since the (abysmal) last film, I Want To Believe still managed to take around $70 million at the worldwide box office. Bloody-Disgusting adds that the rumors they’ve heard peg the next film as a possible reboot, which wouldn’t be all that surprising considering Hollywood’s current trend of recycling old concepts into (semi-)new films.

But why bother? We have new shows like Fringe or even Supernatural that have come along and successfully filled the void left by The X-Files - why not focus on developing those series into FRESH feature film franchises? How much evidence of X-Files‘ dwindling popularity and relevance does the studio need to see before they call it quits?

Of course this is all still just RUMOR for now, so if there is even a sliver of truth to it, hopefully everyone involved will read the damn writing on the wall and pull out before they get in too deep.

What do you think: X-Files 3, thumbs up? Or two thumbs WAY down?

  1. Hope this is true. According to the show and lore the alien invasion is supposed to happen in 2012 and Chris Carter has said that’s what he would want the next film to be about. Too bad they killed off the Cig Smoking Man

  2. Definately would like to see another X-files film, but would prefer to go back to the old “aliens invading” story line. That last story had me confused.

  3. Yeah I’ve heard that the next film will def be about the alien invasion in 2012. I would expect the film will also be out Summer 2012.
Chris Carter has said that he has a real good story to wrap up the show, so don’t expect a reboot.

    This is great news!

  4. YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am so excited for X-Files 3, and I really, really want a third movie!!!!!!!!!!!!! If anyone could create a story about the alien invasion in 2012, Chris Carter can!!!!!!!!!!!! X-Files 3 would be a great way to end the phenomenon of X-Files, and bring conclusion to everything they have left open in the series and new movie. I would absolutely love to see Mulder and Scully again, and it would be great to also bring back Skinner again, and Doggett and Reyes, or at least give a story of what happened to Doggett and Reyes after they got chased by the helicopter. and seeing William at an older age would be awesome too! So I can’t wait until X-Files 3, and I can’t wait to see the story of what will happen on December 22, 2012 through the creative mind of Chris Carter!!!!!!!!!!!!

  5. Copy That!!! Mulderlover26
    :-)

  6. From his blog, Big Light,
Frank Spotnitzs comments on this story :”I am afraid I have no news to report,
other then our continuing desire to do another film if there is an audience for it.”

  7. wow i would love to see an x files 3…..

  8. Pretty cool

Haven’t seen the first 2 movies because I’m watching the show right now

On Season 8 baby! That’s a lot of time spent with Moulder and Skully for me lol.

  9. I hope they do it. And I would love for them to bring Frank Black (Lance Henrickson), from “Millennium”, into the film as well.

I think a Millennium/X-Files crossover movie with the government and the Millennium Group involved would be really cool. Don’t know if it would be good, but i’d love to see it.

  10. I would LOVE to see a third X-Files movie, and I also think that X-Files News is a FANTASTIC resource that all fans of the show can be proud of. Not only does it aggregate news AND rumours, obtain exclusive interviews with actors and crew members we fans love, but it does a lot of work for good causes too. I think it’s quite sad that you choose to insult a site just because you’re not as enthusiastic about the topic as those who love it.

  11. If 2012 does well at the box office,
Fox will take notice and might greenlight a 2012 “Alien Apocalypse” themed X-Files film.
    GO SEE 2012!

  12. The first movie was decent and the second one sucked so they owe us a good film IMO.

  13. This is what Gillian actually said; http://www.worstpreviews.com/headline.php?id=14769&count=0

  14. Ogb, the films are awesome.

  15. X-files deserves another movie.

Great, great show, good first movie. 2nd one was a bit odd.

  16. JAJAJAJA There is no doubt in my mind that fans want a third installment! There are some lose ends that need to be tied!
We are having a major XF3 Army going on (which you can read all about it at XFN “Believe in the Future” Campaign), and even thought we still don´t have a formal confirmation, this scoop from Sarajevo has sparkle that Hope flame that makes up keep on going with this endeavor. Yes We are Believers!!!!

  17. @Jossa

    English please.

  18. 790 Noted and it’s taking some self control not to watch them but the show is keeping me busy. Been watching half an episode before bed for the last 4 moths lol.

  19. IF ITS GOING TO WORK, TO BRING FINAL CLOSURE TO THE SERIES, YOU NEED CSM SPENDER, I KNOW HE DIED IN THE FINAL EPISODE IN NEW MEXICO, BUT WHO’SE TO SAY HE WASN’T A CLONE, I MEAN THEY WERE CLONING SAMANTHA MULDER DURING THE 3RD AND 4TH SEASON. AS FAR AS DOGGETT AND REYES GOES, IT WOULD BE COOL TO SEE THEM IN THERE, BUT YOU REALLY DON’T NEED THEM. MY BIGGEST REQUEST WOULD BE THE LONE GUNMEN, WE NEVER REALLY SAW THEM DIE IN THAT ROOM, IT WAS JUST IMPLIED, AND THE FUNERAL COULD’VE BEEN STAGED. REMEMBER AT THE BEGINNING OF THAT EPISODE IT WAS REVEALED THAT THEY WERE BROKE AND IN DEBT. I COLUD SEE THOSE 3 LIVING IN A CABIN IN MONTANA STILL MONITORING GOVERNMENT ACTIVITIES.

  20. Ogb, you should watch the first film, “Fight the Future” after season 5. I believe it takes place after that season.
If you watch the entire series first the film not match up with the final season or episode. :-)

The second film takes place 10 years after the last episode. And it didn’t suck !!!

  21. Series Spoilers ahead,,,,,,,,,,

    ^

    Don’t look Ogb.
    ^

@EJK, The Lone Gunman are dead. They’re ghosts talked to Mulder in the final episode.

  22. Cmon 790 the second movie was not very good in any way.

  23. I thought it was better then some films I’ve seen based on sequels and tv shows.

MCat, didn’t you use to use MettaliCat as a handle ???

  24. Lol whoops, I’m on season 8 already

That’s good to know, thanks. I’ll actually watch it this weekend.

  25. How many times had we heard that Star Trek was moribund and should be put out of its misery?

Just because the last X-Files film didn’t do all that well doesn’t mean that the next one(?) will follow suit.

With the right story and good production, X-Files could be back on top again.

  26. I think a third X-Files movie is a film that should be made due to the lackluster XF movie that came out last year. While I have grown to enjoy XF 2 for what it is, the idea they have for the third one would do the series and the first film justice. Chris Carter and Frank Spotnitz have said that it would conclude the alien mythology plotline of alien colonization in 2012,

Let’s be honest, the series left that completely open. It needs closure. I think people would welcome an X-Files movie like that if it was done well and marketed well. If they made a couple of kick-butt trailers and really showed them often on TV and in theaters a few months in advance (unlike XF 2), it could be a hit.

  27. 790
    metallicat? No definitely not.

  28. I have to agree with Dan about the way the third film could be done and done well. While I actually enjoyed I Want to Believe, I know many people, particularly casual fans, think of The X-Files and think “aliens”. There isn’t a particular mystery about what the next one is going to be about– the show has the built in 2012 mythology. Two thumbs up for me. Love the characters of Mulder and Scully, and there hasn’t been any show to come even close to what The X-Files was.

  29. not all fans want another film. many of us hated what was done to the show we loved so much, and think it is past time for it to be put to rest.
