X-Files 2: How Is This Not Going Direct-To-DVD?

xfiles sm2 X Files 2: How Is This Not Going Direct To DVD?I know Heath here at Screen Rant is looking forward to the X-Files movie sequel, but me, I just don’t get it. After years of what seems to me to be David Duchovny struggling to get X-Files 2 made, it’s finally happening. Filming starts on December 10th and the studio has targeted July 25th as the release date.

That’s just eight months from start of production to projection on the big screen. Seems pretty quick to me, but as I recall X-Men 3 met a seemingly impossible production schedule as well.

Then again, we all know how well that movie turned out.

What I don’t understand is how much of an audience the studio expects there to be for this movie. The TV series dragged on far too long, with so many red herrings dispensed that eventually even the most hardcore fans of the show became disgusted with all the dead end, go nowhere leads and abandoned the series. When word of a movie came out, folks assumed that maybe they would finally get some closure and satisfaction in a final chapter on the big screen.

Unfortunately that didn’t happen. Many questions were left unanswered and the overall effect was one of a letdown.

So now, 10 years later we’re getting another movie.

Will this one answer all the questions? I don’t know. Do I care? Not at all.

I realize that every movie/TV franchise has it’s core fanbase, but when I hear people talk about how J.J. Abrams’ upcoming Star Trek movie is doomed because their aren’t enough fans to make it a profitable endeavor, I wonder how in the world can X-Files 2 succeed? I can only assume that Star Trek has a far larger fanbase than X-Files does. Then again I suppose if the budget is small enough it wouldn’t take much to make this show a profit.

I guess I just wouldn’t be surprised if this movie was being made but was going either straight to DVD or maybe would end up on Fox TV or the Sci Fi Channel. But a theatrical release? This should be interesting.

X-Files 2 is scheduled to open on July 25th, 2008.

  1. Ouch! I’d be surprised if it pulls a Terminator 3 and is a suprisingly good flick.

  2. I’m seriously thinking of re-launching my fan club. Yeah, I was a bit obsessed for a few years there. But in all seriousness, I’m happy to hear that this is not only being made but will get a theatrical release. I have my fingers crossed for an appearance by the Lone Gunmen.

  3. You know, the only hope for this thing is if (as I think Heath mentioned somewhere) this is a standalone story, having nothing to do with continuity of the series.

    Even then… a theatrical release?

  4. I watched X-Files when it first came out, but only a few episodes at a time. I don’t know why, but I’ve never been a big TV person. Saw the movie opening night, didn’t fully understand everything, because I was out of the loop. Watched the last episode (none of the Lone Gunmen, though), didn’t hate it.

What changed everything for me was around the New Year, 2003, and I watched the pilot and second episode on TNT late at night. I was hooked like it was 1993! I bought the first DVD season (with a bad disc, natch–I’ll probably buy another season 1), but haven’t finished it. Five years later. Yeah, yeah, I stink.

Anyway, since the end of the year is usually quiet for me, leading up to the Holidays, I’m going to just start watching old episodes on DVD. I have 6 seasons on DVD, and will try to get the rest.

And yes, the rumor, Vic, is that it’ll be a supernatural thriller, and a standalone movie.

  5. I never was a huge fan but there were a few episodes from the series that were excellent. One had to do with werewolves I think, it had Mulder and Scully each giving their boss a version of what had happened on a case and it was from each of their POV. It was really funny. The other had Mulder investigating a housing development where odd things were happening and that also had me laughing. Both episodes were really good but I don’t remember them tying into the overall story archs.

  6. I think this is great news. The X-files was a great show and could have gone another 4 seasons easy! I hope if they do a stand alone episode they end it on somekind of clifhanger regaurding the conspiracy arc that seems to never end.
You know the one about our government working with aliens to dominate the world and wipe out half the population. With the state of the world I can see how they could work this into the story ending.
What I’m trying to type is that,,
I will pay money to see this film.
Thanks Chris Carter and David D for making this happen!

  7. Thank you David Duchovny and Chris Carter for making this happen. I really appreciate that.
    I love both of you.
The x-files rule. David, honey, you never quit, my beloved. I love you!

  8. LOL, who knows? Maybe I’m in the minority. :-)

  9. Are you kidding me? Ofcourse a movie based on one of the biggest shows of the nineties will get a theatrical release! Fans have been gagging for this for years! I’m sorry, but to suggest this movie should go straight to dvd is just moronic. And for someone who “doesn’t care” about this movie you sure talk about it a lot.

  10. Tom,

First: Be careful throwing around words like “moronic.” We’ll see who’s right when this finally hits movie theaters as far as box office.

Second: Their are other writers on this site who are covering this film who happen to be fans of the series. I’m not writing all the X-Files articles.

I don’t have a problem with opposing opinions as long as you don’t get personal.

  11. Scuulllllllllyyyyyyyy!
