‘Wreck-It Ralph 2′ In Development; Director Promises Mario in the Sequel

Wreck-It Ralph combines Pixar-esque storytelling with modern and nostalgic video game influences – and even subtle jabs at less-admirable aspects of gaming culture – giving rise to a film that’s managed to impress hardcore gamers, CGI-mation fans and even some of those ‘snobby critics’ who wouldn’t be caught dead playing something like Call of Duty (much less, an old-school arcade title such as Pac-Man or Donkey Kong). So, why wouldn’t Disney want to make a sequel?

Well, it turns out that studio “muckety-muckets” (as Ralph voice actor John C. Reilly calls them) and director Rich Moore have indeed begun to toss around ideas for Wreck-It Ralph 2.

Ralph opened here in the States over a month ago, but remains in the top 10 at the box office and could match its $165 million budget as soon as this weekend. However, it has yet to open in many of the more lucrative foreign markets, which accounts for why Reilly, Sarah Silverman (who voices Vanellope von Schweetz) and director Rich Moore are still out and about promoting the film.

Silverman and Reilly assured Moviehole that Wreck-It Ralph 2 is on the way, with the latter pointing to the first computer-animated toon’s record opening weekend (it squeaked past Tangled, to become Disney Animation Studio’s best premiere). Reilly also playfully knocked-on-wood with a crack about how “They wouldn’t make [all that] merchandise, if [Disney] didn’t have plans for other [Wreck-it Ralph] stories.”

Moore added:

“At dinner last night we were already talking about [a 'Wreck-It Ralph' sequel]. So we’re talking ‘what could do they do? What kind of things could happen? Who could be in it?’”

Well, Moore already has plans to include one icon of the video game industry in the next movie: Mario.

No, not like this

Wreck-It Ralph 2 doesn’t have an official go-ahead yet, but Moore is already planning to return at the helm (assuming the sequel happens). He joked about the Mario brothers being prima donnas at Disney’s 2012 Comic-Con panel, but he informed Moviehole the real reason Mario didn’t appear in the first film is because Moore “couldn’t find anywhere for him to go” – not Nintendo refusing the rights.

To quote:

“We’ll really come up with something good for Mario to do [in the next film]“, says Moore. “To be able to present him in the sequel, would be great.”

That’s encouraging, seeing how most of the video game icon cameos in Wreck-It Ralph (Sonic the Hedgehog, Bowser, Zangief, etc.) made for entertaining Easter Eggs, but were otherwise superfluous to the plot. Mario could feasibly play a more essential role in the sequel, similar to how Barbie was incorporated into the Toy Story world in Toy Story 2 (before she became even more important in Toy Story 3). Not to mention, obvious jokes about Mario having similar career experiences as Fix-It Felix Jr. (Jack McBrayer), but ending up with a very different sort of woman (see below)…

That’s to say: there’s very much room for Wreck-It Ralph 2 to improve on its predecessor - namely, by finding an organic way to continue the story, further explore its universe and expand upon the themes and concepts introduced in the first film (much like the Toy Story sequels did). Color us hopeful that happens.

Wreck-It Ralph is currently playing in theaters (2D and 3D) around the U.S.

  1. Am eagerly waiting to watch wreck it ralph 2

  2. Am eagerly waiting for wreck it ralph 2

  3. I would so love that please give this movie a sequel. This movie was just so Good.

    • i hope that one idiot dosent come. AKA, Miles Tails Prower!

  4. I’m a Legend of Zelda fan, and I was going to suggest having Link somewhere in the movie, but after seeing around the internet for a Zelda arcade game, I couldn’t find one. I am also a Mario fan, and I am really excited for this movie to come out! I loved the first movie and I know the next one will be great too!

    • It is still possible to include Zelda. I don’t think there was a sonic arcade game either. The could expand to console gaming.

      • Actually, there were a few. Sonic: The Fighters and a version of Sonic 2, for example.

  5. You need more of the other racers. They have potential and there are lots of fans for them.

  6. Wreck-It Ralph isn’t Pixar, it’s regular, old Disney. It’s feels like it’s Pixar, though!

    • Turns out Disney own Pixar…amazing huh?

  7. I cannot wait to see the sequel for Wreck it Ralph 2. Hopping to see and point out offer nostalgic characters to friends and family alike. Iconic Nintendo characters like Pokemon, Mario and crew, or even a fun usage of the old school Battle Toads. No matter what they decided to do or who makes an appearance the movie is sure to be a hit! I for one an eager for more

  8. Please bring out a sequel! It’s one of my favorite movies! Think I went to watch it about three times! One idea I’ve always played around with since the movie came out is, what if a human could somehow be transported to the arcade world? ;) yeah not so original but would be cool! Oh and was sad to see Turbo go. Wish he could make a comeback. Wasn’t too bad a villain. Maybe bring in an even more awesomely evil virus??

    • Someone could get transported into the arcade world by a game being updated cable and a new online mode cable both at the same time getting near a power cable an that spark of electric also shocked a human and they get transported and when they finally get out they think it was a dream until they see Ralph, Felix and the others waving at him/her on a game screen and hear them say bye through the game speakers, good idea huh??????

  10. I’m 35 and this is one of my favorite movies. I can’t wait for the sequel!

Plot? I can imagine something like this: Much like today, most sole Arcades have gone out of business. The movie’s arcade place goes under. The old owner decides to recoup some of his losses by selling his arcade games. Once the hub realizes this, Felix and Ralph smuggle as many friends as they can into their game before it’s purchased by a local Bowling Alley.

When they reach and get plugged into the Arcade Hub at the bowling alley, they find that it’s beyond corrupt by s***** EA / Activision games.

    Ralph wrecks ‘en all.

  11. Yeah I’m waiting for Wreck It Ralph 2 add the TMNT since they did have arcade games.

  12. Make mario and sonic as a main character on it!

  13. I think it would be a cool feature to add more Easter eggs like “all your base are belong to us” which is in the first one but I think It would be cool to add some game characters like freddy fazbear, master chief, ezio, etc.

  14. Wreck-It Ralph really deserves a sequel the most out of the revival-era Disney films. The princess-type movies just don’t lend themselves well to sequels (as we’ve seen demonstrated many times), whereas WIR has a Toy Story kind of spirit to it – character development leads the plot, the setting has endless possibilities, and the characters are so lovable, memorable, and interesting that you just want to see more of them, especially since we didn’t get to see Ralph, Vanellope, Felix, and Calhoun all together until the end. I want to see all four of them interact amongst themselves as a family, since they’ve clearly become very close.

This Disney film is on par with Pixar’s best, and there’s so much that can be done with a sequel – I can certainly see this becoming a franchise with the same critical, commercial, and merchandising success as Toy Story, if the powers-that-be give it a chance.

  15. I cannot wait for wreck it Ralph 2 !!

  16. Please make Wreck it Ralph 2. Both of my kids love this movie and they can’t wait to see what you do with this next one. My 11 year old even wants to write a story for school about it. My kids have seen this movie many times but I just watched the movie tonight for
I first time and I would actually watch with them repeatedly. So please make a second Wreck it Ralph. If you are able to reply this date of release or confirm that it is actually in development, that would be great. Thanks!

  17. Wreck it Ralph is one of the few pixar movies I can watch more than once back to back. Everything from world design to concept was ingenious. A sequel is definitely deserved and I can see this out doing toy Story

  18. My kids were literally jumping up and down when I told them there just might be a second Wreck it Ralph coming from Disney! It’s gotta be one of the cutest kid’s movies ever… I’ve watched it like 30 times or more with my three kids, and they know the movie lines by heart. I would be thrilled myself to see another one come out, but there better be a part for Vanellope Von Scwheetz in this round 2 of the movie! It just wouldn’t be the same without Vanellope being part of the film.

  19. How about putting tekken characters? That would be awesome!!!! :)
Armor King, Devil Jin, Hoarang, Azazel so many possibilities ..:D
Favorite movie btw, looking forward for the sequel. And i just love Venellope <3

  20. Sora, I believe you’re forgetting four important characters that would make a great cameo in the movie. You, Donald, Goofy, and Riku, or at least you and Riku. You guys have to be in the movie somehow, please!!!!!!!!!!

  21. I can’t wait for the new film! The first is always amazing and I have no clue what the story would be in the new one! It makes me feel happy inside, because this was a big film and something utterly amazing what needs more credit.

  22. I have an idea for a sequel…

  23. I think if they did want to somehow have a human transported into the arcade world they could have an arcade game being updated and have a new online arcade mode and the cable for the online and the cable being used to update the game could both get near a power cable at the same time and a spark of electric touching them both at the same time when someone also got shocked by that that spark somehow transported them into the arcade world and when they finally get out and wake up they think it was a dream but they then see on an arcade game screen Ralph and the others all waving and hears them say bye through the games speakers, good idea or what?????
