‘Wreck-It Ralph 2′ In Development; Director Promises Mario in the Sequel

Wreck-It Ralph combines Pixar-esque storytelling with modern and nostalgic video game influences – and even subtle jabs at less-admirable aspects of gaming culture – giving rise to a film that’s managed to impress hardcore gamers, CGI-mation fans and even some of those ‘snobby critics’ who wouldn’t be caught dead playing something like Call of Duty (much less, an old-school arcade title such as Pac-Man or Donkey Kong). So, why wouldn’t Disney want to make a sequel?

Well, it turns out that studio “muckety-muckets” (as Ralph voice actor John C. Reilly calls them) and director Rich Moore have indeed begun to toss around ideas for Wreck-It Ralph 2.

Ralph opened here in the States over a month ago, but remains in the top 10 at the box office and could match its $165 million budget as soon as this weekend. However, it has yet to open in many of the more lucrative foreign markets, which accounts for why Reilly, Sarah Silverman (who voices Vanellope von Schweetz) and director Rich Moore are still out and about promoting the film.

Silverman and Reilly assured Moviehole that Wreck-It Ralph 2 is on the way, with the latter pointing to the first computer-animated toon’s record opening weekend (it squeaked past Tangled, to become Disney Animation Studio’s best premiere). Reilly also playfully knocked-on-wood with a crack about how “They wouldn’t make [all that] merchandise, if [Disney] didn’t have plans for other [Wreck-it Ralph] stories.”

Moore added:

“At dinner last night we were already talking about [a 'Wreck-It Ralph' sequel]. So we’re talking ‘what could do they do? What kind of things could happen? Who could be in it?’”

Well, Moore already has plans to include one icon of the video game industry in the next movie: Mario.

No, not like this

Wreck-It Ralph 2 doesn’t have an official go-ahead yet, but Moore is already planning to return at the helm (assuming the sequel happens). He joked about the Mario brothers being prima donnas at Disney’s 2012 Comic-Con panel, but he informed Moviehole the real reason Mario didn’t appear in the first film is because Moore “couldn’t find anywhere for him to go” – not Nintendo refusing the rights.

To quote:

“We’ll really come up with something good for Mario to do [in the next film]“, says Moore. “To be able to present him in the sequel, would be great.”

That’s encouraging, seeing how most of the video game icon cameos in Wreck-It Ralph (Sonic the Hedgehog, Bowser, Zangief, etc.) made for entertaining Easter Eggs, but were otherwise superfluous to the plot. Mario could feasibly play a more essential role in the sequel, similar to how Barbie was incorporated into the Toy Story world in Toy Story 2 (before she became even more important in Toy Story 3). Not to mention, obvious jokes about Mario having similar career experiences as Fix-It Felix Jr. (Jack McBrayer), but ending up with a very different sort of woman (see below)…

That’s to say: there’s very much room for Wreck-It Ralph 2 to improve on its predecessor - namely, by finding an organic way to continue the story, further explore its universe and expand upon the themes and concepts introduced in the first film (much like the Toy Story sequels did). Color us hopeful that happens.

  1. R they still planning on doing it? I really dont wanna get my hopes up if they r not

  2. Yes, they are planning on doing Wreck-it Ralph 2. It was even said that the scripts are beening written.

  3. I would LOVE Wreck it Ralph 2 if Taffyta had a big role, and became one of Vanellope’s friends, she’s my favorite Wreck it Ralph character! I’m sorry, she actually apologized to Vanellope, unlike all of the other racers who blamed Taffyta. Plus can she be less of a bully if she is in, that was literally the only thing I disliked about her. My sister REALLY wants Gloyd to be in, at least having one line. She told me that he NEEDS a voice actor. I think his personality is funny, but he has no lines! How would you know what he’s like?! Also looking forward to Mario being in the movie, I LOVE the Mario games, although my sister was sad that some of her favorite characters in the series aren’t going to be in it… Don’t worry, I still am looking forward to seeing this movie!

  4. Me and my family would love it hope it works out

  5. OMG!!! I have breaking news! :D !THIS IS REAL INFORMATION. IT IS NOT A HOAX OR A RUMOR! Just almost a month ago, Henry Jackman has leaked news that Rich Moore and the production team has started writing “Wreck-It Ralph 2″! Here’s a link for the announcement, and the person who posted it!

  6. Oh I really hope there will be a Wreck It Ralph 2. I kinda don’t like the idea of Mario.Hey and go to Ask Vanellope and I will answer.Don’t ask me inapropiate questions or I will not answer.I know its stupid I have rules against that but hey,I’m a little kid.Actually now that I think about it I like the idea of Mario.

  8. What year would it be coming out?

  9. Plz let megaman be in the next movie or at least megaman characters. I remember Dr. Wily was supposed to be in the bad guy convention early in the first movie.

  10. I loved wreck it ralph I think they should make the second one to where he spends lot of time with president penelope shweets

  11. When is wreck it Ralph 2 goin to come out

  12. Hey if My Favourite MushroomKingdom Hero Mario in it i’d go real crazy and go watch the movie on the first day it comes and I will Never Spoil The Movie, just if it comes out .

  13. Why mario? i didn’t think he is a great character or game at all

    • It doesnt matter if he is a good character or his games are good. What matters is the fact that he is the most iconic videogame character of all times. Thus, he deserves his place in the Ralph sequel.

  14. Please give more roles for the sugar rush racers!!!
Like more lines and make them a bit more important in the story.

  15. If Mario is in the next movie I want Charles Martinet to voice him. I will refuse anybody else. Also I have a feeling a second wreck it ralph would not be as good as the first one. They could surprise me though.

  16. I agree. If Charles Martinet is not gonna voice Mario, it’s better to not give Mario a voice at all.

And I already know the sequel won’t be as good as the first one since it’s usually hard to make a movie that’s better than the first.

  17. I need a sequel!

  18. Loved the first movie, and now eagerly awaiting a sequel. if Mario does appear, I hope sonic does to, it would be great to see some interaction between the two of them

  19. ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh oh my gosh sooooooooooooooooooooooooo exited!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  20. More Sonic as well! They could do so much with all the Hedgehog vs. Plumber ideas… Or go the complete opposite and make them best buds! So much potential!

  21. It would be great if they could sneak in Ralph visiting Second Life to create some objects he needs, World of Warcraft to gain a magic spell, and passing through Elder Scrolls on-line to grab a dragon mount. if they could get him to pass through Madden Football and Fallout New Vegas, that would hit most of the big money earning games. Just one glance at the top earning 50 games should help tjem decide what backdrop games to add … and the more cameos the better…
I totally want to see the Space Ball from Portal to float on by in the credits! The Lunar Lander should be in the movie too : it was one of the first arcade games along with pong.

    • Hahahah, that is awesome. I didn’t think I would see world of warcraft in a comment. Interesting ideas there SeaJay.

  22. I’d really like to see some elements from Minecraft (maybe like a Creeper cameo appearance) or even Portal in the sequel.
I’d also like to see Turbo make some sort of return (I think you can guess who my favorite character is), but that’s really unlikely. The first movie wrapped up his story pretty well.

  23. If there’s a second it will prob b come out 2015 or 2016

  24. I think mario and sonic should have major roles in the sequel…

  25. You have to bring back TURBO!!!!??!?????!????!?????!!!??

  26. I think the release of Wreck it ralph 2 is awesome! I only wish the sugar rush racers were more important characters, being a majority of the characters. I think they should have a more important role, or at least a role for Adorabeezle. Like “Great job president” after a race, or some sort of catch phrase. I wish I could cast, but… I’ll keep dreaming.

  27. YES!!!! Please do Wreck-it Ralph 2, Wreck-it Ralph is one of those movies that I can watch 2 or even 3 times in a rowe

  28. A sequel would be perfect. I only watched the first film a few days ago but I loved it. I enjoyed it so much so I watched it again the next day. The writing and story were nearly perfect and I ended up watching it a 3rd time just to look for secrets and Easter eggs. If the writers and producers can do such a good job on the first film then I think they can pull a sequel out of it, no trouble.

    • I love this movie, and I’m excited for the sequel,if it happens.

I do think it would be difficult to explain the presence of non-arcade based characters such as World of Warcraft, unless the story has the main characters leaving the arcade world for the larger world, not sure how they would do that, but it would be great!
