Edgar Ramirez and Toby Kebbell up for Wrath of the Titans Wrath of the Titans Casting News & Rumors

Casting for next year’s Wrath of the Titans is getting underway and the sequel may have found its Ares, God of War and Phoenician king Agenor in Carlos star Edgar Ramirez and The Sorcerer’s Apprentice villain Toby Kebbell, respectively. Meanwhile, two other thespians familiar with the Hollywood blockbuster scene are rumored to be contenders to join the next humans vs. gods showdown as well.

Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures are actively holding negotiations with Ramirez and and Kebbell to star in their Clash of the Titans sequel, which is scheduled to begin production this spring.

Javier Bardem and James Franco were previously linked to the roles of Ares and Agenor in Wrath of the Titans, but Warner Bros. has apparently passed on bringing the No Country For Old Men Oscar-winner onboard – and Franco may be too busy adapting literary masterpieces. Most of the primary cast members from last year’s Titans remake will reprise their roles in the followup, which will include Sam Worthington as Perseus; Gemma Arterton as Io; Liam Neeson as Zeus (father to both Perseus and Ares); and Ralph Fiennes’ other lord of darkness character, Hades.

The Wrap has also revealed that Harry Potter/Pirates of the Caribbean franchise member and acclaimed character actor Bill Nighy is “being courted” to play Hephaestus, God of technology/metallurgy/fire/etc. and possible son of Zeus as well (he is at least Hera’s offspring). There’s an easy joke there about how Neeson’s Zeus understandably gets around, but, moving on…

Captain America‘s Hayley Atwell is reportedly on a shortlist of actresses up to play Greek princess (and Cetus bait) Andromeda. She is being considered along with the likes of Janet Montgomery (Black Swan), Clémence Poésy (127 Hours, the Harry Potter series) – and a handful of other up-and-coming young women – for the part in Wrath of the Titans.

Bill Nighy and Hayley Atwell up for Wrath of the Titans Wrath of the Titans Casting News & Rumors

Nighy and Atwell may appear in 'Wrath of the Titans'.

Clash of the Titans secured a spot on our most disappointing films of 2010 list as we and many other moviegoers felt that it failed to live up to its promise as an exciting and fun piece of blockbuster entertainment. No one was expecting the remake to have stellar dialogue, great character development, or necessarily even make sense all the way through. The Clash of the Titans trailer hinted at lots of hyper-kinetic battles between swords & sandals-clad warriors and CGI monsters, but the mindless final product failed to deliver even that.

Director Jonathan Liebesman’s Battle: Los Angeles arrives in theaters this March and looks to be a engagingly gritty alien invasion flick, which bodes well for his Clash of the Titans sequel. Add to that the possible involvement of talent like Ramirez and Nighy, and Worthington’s promise that Wrath of the Titans will be good could come true. The project is being conceived as a 3D film from the beginning, not post-converted at the last minute, which should also help matters.

Wrath of the Titans is scheduled to reach 2D and 3D theaters on March 30th, 2012.
