Woody Harrelson Says ‘Zombieland 2′ Isn’t A Guarantee

Zombieland Sequel Woody Harrelson Woody Harrelson Says Zombieland 2 Isnt A Guarantee

Total Film spoke with Zombieland star Woody Harrelson recently, and in somewhat of a downer update (see what I did there?) the hemp-loving thespian let it be known that while Hollywood logic would dictate that a sequel to a $100 million box office hit (and winner of “Most Pirated Movie 2009“) is a no-brainer, Zombieland 2 is not something that is guaranteed to happen – nor should it be.

In speaking with Total Film, Harrelson had the following perspective to offer:

“I didn’t even want to read the script [of the first film]… Then as it turns out, I read the script and I thought it was phenomenal, really funny…Usually, if I theoretically reject it, I’m right, but this one I was dead wrong. And it might be the first movie I do a sequel to.”

“I’m sure it will happen if everyone does it, but I’m not sure it’s the right thing to do…It’s one thing to do it when it came out real good and it made a lot of people laugh, but then to do a sequel…I don’t know. I don’t feel like a sequels guy.”

My first reaction would be to say that a Zombieland sequel would move forward with or without Harrelson returning – but at this point I’d be talking out of my rear. In fact, the last we heard about Zombieland 2 was well over a year ago, when the writers of the first film, Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, pitched some possibilities for the sequel and even floated the idea of filming it in 3D. Since that time, mum has been the word on the Zombieland front.

Flash-forward to today and the possibility of getting another Zombieland has gotten less likely than before. Reese and Wernick have been working hard on the scripts for G.I. Joe 2 and the eagerly-anticipated Deadpool movie, which would suggest that there’s been little time or room for them to tackle an up-in-the-air project like Zombieland 2.

Then there’s the issue of recollecting the stars of the original film for a sequel. Zombieland was made on a modest $23 million budget, but since that time, the stars of the film have seen their careers hit a fast stride, and bringing them back for the sequel would likely not be a moderately priced negotiation. Woody Harrelson kind of meanders through Hollywood these days, picking mostly bit parts or indie roles at leisure (see: Defendor, 2012, The Messenger) but Zombieland‘s other stars are in the prime of their time in Hollywood.

zombieland cast Woody Harrelson Says Zombieland 2 Isnt A Guarantee

L to R: Eisenberg, Stone, Breslin and Harrelson in 'Zombieland'.

Jesse Eisenberg is up for a Best Actor Oscar for his Social Network role, while Emma Stone had a breakout year with Easy A and will be starring in The Amazing Spider-Man next year. Expect her to be tied up in Spidey’s web for at least one more sequel after ASM. Little Abigail Breslin isn’t so little anymore, and her career as a serious actress is certainly wide open. Catch Breslin this year voicing a character in Rango and starring in the star-studded ensemble film, New Year’s Eve.

There are a lot of movies that, when looking back from the present, appear to be small miracles in terms of the talent who came together to make them (Three Kings, looking at you). Zombieland now fits in that category, and the notion of bringing back all the talent involved in the film is just as Woody Harrelson would suggest: not something that necessarily will happen.

As for the question of whether or not Zombieland 2 should be made? I’ll let you guys answer that in the comments.

  3. U should make a zombieland 2, I absolutely loved the first one and in zombieland 2 u could show how after the amusement park what happened and if they met anyone else.

  4. Please, Please make Zombieland 2. My daughter and I can’t get enough of the first Zombieland. I can’t count how many times we’ve watched it. I’ve even downloaded to my phone so I can watch it when I’m away from home.

  5. Zombieland 2 NEEDS to happen. And Zombieland 3 and 4 and 5 and 6…all the way to 22. IT NEEEDS TO HAPPEN.

  6. I would love to see a zombieland 2.

  7. You’d have to be crazy not to another Zombieland especially since it was such a hit. Now would be the perfect time to get moving forward with the project with all the crazy doomsday scenarios it would only feed the hunger for an end of the world concept. Hell there is actually real live gun ammunition for zombies on the market today. That should tell you people will gobbled Zombieland 2 up.

  8. okay so i see that there is alot of people wanting a sequal but in my opinion that would be a very bad idea its kinda like makeing a forest gumo two it is just not the best idea

  9. I think they should make a zombieland 2 with a brand new set of characters, from another part of the country or something.

  10. They have to make a Zombieland 2 because at the end of Zombieland 1 they said, “until next time” so that would lead into a second Zombieland.

  11. yeah i believe Zombieland 2 needs to happen as well. I just can’t seem to get enough of part 1. and making a part 2 would make alot of people happy. but that is just my opinion. :)

  12. Yes I wanna see zombieland part2

  13. I celebrated my birthday in 2009 watching this movie! I’ve always been a fan of Woody Harrelson but I didn’t know much about the other characters. I’d love to see a Zombieland sequel, quite honestly.

  14. I think they should make a zombie land two the cast is so funny

  16. I want it made. Cuz when it ended in the first movie, it seems like there was going to be another one. I will be really interested to see it in theaters.

  17. You have to make this. You wont need the original cast, maybe some cameos. Keep the same director, same budget, different location and some fresh actors. Opening scene has to be in a hostess twinkie factory next to the gas station talahasee was using the bathroom at and show Talahasee running around the parking lot in the background., the driver of the over turned hostess truck found in the first movie is your main character.Do not recycle any jokes from the first movie. BAM! That kid from Kick Ass would be perfect. You could have 2 hours of Zombies driving cars and we would support Z land 2…

  18. zombieland 2 will happen with the same and expanded cast, it makes business sense

  19. We totally need a ZombieLand 2. Its my favorite movie (#1) I LOVE IT!! And Woody is my Favorite character! and also Christopher Mintz-Plasse would be an AMAZING pleasure in number 2!! He did a WONDERFUL job in Fright Night and Kick ASS

  20. You should definitely make a sequel zombieland was definitely the best movie I have EVER seen and then to continue it that would be the BEST thing that has ever happened

  21. Oh and it was pretty funny that woody didn’t care about anything but getting his twinke

  22. most watched movie in my dvd collection…definitely a must for 2…

  23. most watched movie in my dvd collection…definitely a must for 2…
no doubt about it…and i’d love to see these characters return but they can’t be the only survivors

  24. Y’all should make part 2 it would be alsome and y’all would make a lot of money. Hope u have a good year god bless u all

  25. I absolutely love this movie, i literally memorized the rules and how you mixed horror with comedy is amazing, ive seen almost every zombie movie and this is by far the bsst one. And most likely the new zombie movie warm bodies will a want fans want more zombie movies. But honestly warm bodies doesnt look all that good, people like classic zombie movies. Not tailored ones. BRING ON ZOMBIELAND 2! :)

  26. Absolutely make a sequel! The chemistry between the characters was incredible, the writing was great…as long as the sequel can re-capture that, DO IT!

  27. I would really want to see zombieland 2 cause come on best funny zombie land in all time and woody harrelson should stop being that way everyone loves him I’m sure he a great guy one my fav actors and he’s funny to me

  28. There really should be a second zombieland. I have watched the first one well over 20 times and literally know mostly every single line in it. It is my favorite movie of all time. And if you need another actor in the second movie, please email me, becuase ever since i saw the first movie I have been dreaming to be in the second one.

  29. There MUST be a sequel. So many people actually watch this movie repeatedly. My wife and I included. Excelent humor and plenty of action. You cant help but fall in love with the characters and the way they rely on eachother. It cant possibly end here. That would be a true disaster…
