[UPDATE: We Now have an idea of who Hurley will be playing. See Post for Details.]
Ever since NBC picked up David E. Kelley’s Wonder Woman pilot, news about the TV show has been coming at us pretty regularly. We know that Adrianne Palicki will be playing the titular super heroine, and that her initial TV outing will be directed by veteran TV director/producer Jeffrey Reiner (The Event). We even got some early script and character details that let us know how the show will approach the character of Wonder Woman and her dual alter egos, Diana Prince and Diana Themyscira.
Despite all that we have learned about Wonder Woman, there’s been one element of the show that we haven’t really heard about: which villain the Amazon warrior will be fighting. Now, thanks to the always informative world of Twitter, we at least know who will be playing said villain: model/actress Elizabeth Hurley.
Word about Hurley’s involvement with Wonder Woman came from the actress herself, as she proclaimed to her “Tweeps” all around the web:
@ElizabethHurley: “Thrilled to be doing the NBC pilot Wonder Woman. I’ll be playing the evil villain. Can’t wait.”
Most people remember Hurley as the leggy beauty in Austin Powers, and as the most gorgeous version of The Devil ever imagined in Bedazzled. Needless to say, having her back on the screen won’t be a problem for many of Wonder Woman‘s male viewers .
As for who Hurley is playing? Well, there are a lot of female foes in Wonder Woman’s rogues gallery – everything from corporate schemers like Veronica Cale and Julianna Sazia, to costumed villains like Cheetah or Silver Swan. There are even a host of mythological-themed villains, like Circe and Morgana. While it would please fanboys (and girls) to see David E. Kelley and Co. referring to the Wonder Woman comic book cannon to create their villain, in a case like this, I think it’s fair to assume that the showrunners could very well create a new villain for Hurley to portray. We’ll see.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: I’m not at all sold on this Wonder Woman pilot. The details that were revealed in a review of the script made Kelley’s take on the character seem more than just a bit off. For my breakdown of what specifically worries me about the show, go HERE.
In the meantime, more details about Hurley’s villain character are sure to be revealed shortly – we’ll update you when we hear something.
UPDATE: According to TV Line, Hurley would indeed play a villain from Wonder Woman’s rouges gallery – the aforementioned Veronica Cale. Here’s a quick rundown of the character:
Veronica Cale’s hatred of Wonder Woman seems to be founded in jealousy, as she believes if there is a Wonder Woman, it is her. Cale’s father left before she was born, her mother died early of cancer. Cale, however, was able to gain a number of doctorate degrees and become a self-made millionaire and philanthropist. These accomplishments, Cale believes, have made her more worthy of revere than being born into fame and riches, as she believes Diana was.
Cale would be a good villain to center on, as she occupies the same corporate world that we know Diana Prince/Themyscira will be inhabiting in the show. Cale is also more of an “architect” villain than a straight-up toe-to-toe foe; she could orchestrate plots against Wonder Woman over the course of a season, kind of like Lex Luthor on Smallville.
Hurley will likely bring a mix of sexiness, cattyness, and menace to the role – if negotiations for the part get finalized, that is. TV Line reports that issues with Hurley’s visa are holding the British actress back from being 100% locked for the part, but all should be resolved shortly.
Wonder Woman will premiere this fall on NBC.
