Warner Bros. and their newfound DC Entertainment division will be banking heavily on comic book properties going forward to represent their key summer tentpoles and other blockbuster franchises in the post-Harry Potter era. Batman 3 is on the way; the Green Lantern franchise is prepping for its launch and Superman is getting a reboot. Outside of The Flash, the other key DC character many have been waiting for is Wonder Woman. Where is she and what’s taking so long?

There’s certainly a lot of interest in bringing back Wonder Woman, and for years Warner Bros. and producer Joel Silver had talent involved with early development of a feature film, but it simply was never able to get off the ground. Joss Whedon was attached a few years back but eventually parted ways. More recently, X-Men franchise producer Lauren Shuler Donner made it public that she was campaigning to produce the Wonder Woman movie, explaining that there is a lot of potential for the character. Bronson director Nicolas Winding Refn even mentioned earlier this summer that he wanted to direct.

Despite all of that interest, a direct-to-video animated film last year, and the studio beginning to launch its DC Comics live-action film universe, Wonder Woman may not be taking part and instead, she will be getting her own new television series. According to a report today from The Hollywood Reporter, WB is planning a modernized reboot of Wonder Woman with David E. Kelley (Boston Legal, Ally McBeal) as the likely candidate to write and produce.

One long-standing issue regarding a new live-action adaptation of Wonder Woman was her costume which many hold as too extreme and impractical as a uniform to fight in – that and it’s a bit degrading. It simply looks too ridiculous for someone to wear in today’s modern and more reality-based comic book adaptations. Conveniently enough, this has been remedied with the new and drastically different Wonder Woman costume designed for the 600th issue of the comic book series.

Wonder Woman's new look

There is  no doubt that part (or all) of the reasoning behind this redesign came from those high up in the WB food chain with the idea of making the character more contemporary and ripe for expansion into other mediums. As it stands, that next medium seems to be live-action TV. Will such a series be truer to the comics, or will it be more along the lines of CW’s successful Smallville series?

If they ever want to do a Justice League movie down the road, isn’t Wonder Woman necessary on the movie side of things as well? Perhaps this will build up to that and help generate more interest and knowledge of the character.

  1. OMG NO THAT OUTFIT IS NOT WONDER WOMEN IN ANY WAY. WONDER WOMEN IS STRONG AND NO OUTFIT CAN MAKE HER WEAK OR MAKE HER A IMAGE OF A GUYS SEXIST SOCIETY BECAUSE LIKE IN THE CARTOONS FROM THE MOVIE TO THE JL UNLIMITED , SHE IS STRONG AS SUPERMAN IF NOT STRONGER BECAUSE SHE WILL NOT GIVE UP AND THAT IS WHAT MAKE HER OUTFIT NOT IMPORTANT WHEN ONE SEE HER SOUL IN HER WORDS AND STRENGTH THEN ANY ONE KNOWS HER OUTFIT DOES NOT DEFINE HER. IT IS HER PERSONALTY AND WILL TO NEVER GIVE IN. WONDER WOMEN CARTOON MOVIE HAD THE OUTFIT AS WE ALL KNOW HER AND THERE WAS NO PROBLEM WITH IT. ALSO ON A SIDE NOTE THEY SHOULD REALLY FOLLOW THE CARTOON MOVIE ON HOW SHE IS MADE TO BE

SORRY FOR THE CAPS BUT THAT OUTFIT HAS ME SO MAD.IT IS NOT WONDER WOMEN IF SHE DOES NOT WEAR HER OUTFIT THAT SHE HAS ALWAYS WORN .. REMEMBER THE WONDER WOMEN MOVIE BEFORE THE SHOW IN THE 70′S. THAT OUTFIT WAS LIKE THIS AND THAT MOVIE SUCKED

  2. Yeah, that costume has to go. The costume that Wonder Woman is known for is what they should use. They could alter the shorts somewhat, but they should remain shorts and the upper body part of her costume should remain the same as well. If Batman, Spiderman, and Superman can wear THEIR costumes, then she surely can wear hers. If David E. Kelly does this, I hope it’s successful. He has a good track record, but not with anything that’s action, so I hope there’s not too much dialogue through every episode. When the action starts, I hope it starts! And also, Nadia Bjorlin would seem great as Wonder Woman on a tv series.

  3. Wow, that new costume blows chunks. It doesn’t look amazonian, sexy, or convey strength. If you’re going to upgrade an icon’s outfit, don’t alter it so much that it is unrecognizable, that’s a disservice to fans. Just make it more modern (like the various batman costumes). I was a big fan of Linda Carter and the T.V. show, i’m 24 so I watched the episodes long after they were off-air, but I think that WW definitely deserves to be put on the big screen. If Batman and superman get big budget films then I definitely think Wonder Woman, one of the DC trinity, should get one as well, especially before Green Lantern (and i’m a huge GL fan). I just saw adrianna palicki shots from the set of the new show. She is hot but that costume isn’t that great…looks like a cheap halloween costume. I’ll reserve judgement til I see the show because even though the photos weren’t that exciting, hopefully the show will have some great writing. I pray they still pursue making a feature film…that’d be cool.

  4. They need to stick with the original costume as much as possible… But I’m more concerned about who will play W.W. If Megan Fox does it there goes my desire to have anything to do with it. My vote hands down is Bridget Regan she has a great presence, the build, the experience playing a strong woman character with fighting skills to boot, all around great fit for the part. I dont think it would be a stretch it would be a natural fit. Being a fan of the comic having had read it as a girl growing up W.W needs to be done right cast the wrong fem for the part and the belief will go out the window.

  5. …ARE YOU KIDDING ME!? They won’t give the most important female super hero in the World her own STINKING MOVIE?! And not only that, but they want to use the new “costume”?? If i could, i’d slap them all in their faces.

  6. I think it is ludacris to make and include sequels to other heroes like batman and superman and not have wonder woman. I don’t think that I am the only one who feels this way but I truly think that A Wonder Woman (live Movie) is definitely one movie that will make it big. A television show can be missed or never watched due to personal reasoning but a movie that has a lot of potential and I am sure that there is someone out there who can play the part well. In my honest opinion someone like Angelina Jolie or someone close to those features would definitely make the cut. I will beg and plea for you guys to please reconsider that proposal and make us a Live big screen movie of Wonder Woman.
