It’s been an incredible year for superhero fans and the studios who love them. With three major clashes of the comic book titans already released, including DC Extended Universe launcher Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, Warner Bros. and DC are just getting their shared universe rolling. Without a doubt, one of the more well-received introductions from Batman V Superman was Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman, who made a big impact despite her relatively small role.
The Amazonian princess recently wrapped shooting on her own standalone film, due out next year. Among the highlights of the Patty Jenkins-helmed Wonder Woman will be the introduction of frequent love interest Steve Trevor, the revelation of Diana’s true array of powers, and, of course, the Amazons.
A recent post on the Kitana Fan Facebook page (via CBM) shows an army of trouble brewing on Themyscira. Trouble, that is, for anyone who stands against the Amazonian army. Among the shots included are some terrific green screens stills from the island beaches in Italy where director Jenkins filmed the Amazonian forces as they engage in combat with their adversaries.
A close up shot included one of the first looks at Canadian actress, martial artist, and stuntwoman Samantha Jo’s role. Primarily known for her work as Kitana in Mortal Kombat Legacy, Jo also had smaller parts in Man of Steel (as a stunt double for Antje Traue), Twilight: Breaking Dawn, and Ninja Gaiden 3. According to IMDB, Jo will portray Euboea, one of Diana’s close friends in the comic books.
Like other Amazons, including Wonder Woman, Antiope (Robin Wright, Hippolyta (Connie Nielsen) and Captain of the Guard Egeria (Madeleine Vall), Euboea is gifted with superhuman strength and immortality and can only be killed by accident or in battle (admittedly, not the best immortality package out there). She also happens to be a high-powered general among the Amazon warriors. Introduced in Wonder Woman #10, during the New Earth/Bronze Age cycle, Euboea was primarily a minor character, despite being a good friend of Diana. As such, it will be interesting to see how much of a role she plays in Wonder Woman.
No matter the size of her part, Jo’s casting comes as great news for fans of the actress and her work as Kitana. Hopefully, Jenkins and crew will utilize Jo’s agility and martial arts talent to the fullest. As she proved during her run on Mortal Kombat Legacy, Jo is an electrifying performer. Any of her scenes in Wonder Woman will benefit from her impressive abilities.
