‘Bronson’ Director Interested In Wonder Woman Movie

Published 5 years ago by , Updated June 27th, 2013 at 3:15 pm,

Danish writer/director Nicolas Winding Refn create a bit of a stir last month when he expressed interest in wanting to adapt DC Comic’s Wonder Woman.  This week, he sat down with Movieline and revealed some more of his thoughts on the iconic Amazonian princess.

Arguably the most famous comic book heroine around, Wonder Woman has had little to no success making her way to theaters.  Long before his name became connected with The Avengers movie, Joss Whedon was actually set to bring the character to the big screen before the project fell apart.  Given the Buffy the Vampire Slayer creator’s history, it seemed like a perfect fit for him.

But what is the appeal of Wonder Woman to Refn, a filmmaker who tends to make “foreign-made indies rendered with unflinching brutality and pitch-black humor,” such as the Bronson biopic and The Pusher trilogy? Refn claims it’s the central question that the character of Wonder Woman raises, namely ” What if women were more powerful [physically] than men?  What would the world be like?”

Refn went on to propose a simple solution to Wonder Woman’s lack of a definitive foe:

“OK, so you create some.  She doesn’t have a Joker or those classic Batman kinds of guys.  But she does have her whole world that she comes from, which is fascinating.  The whole idea of a woman who is basically more powerful than any man – and who will always be that, and comes from a society of women who are more powerful than men – is an interesting theme that I think can be very contemporary.”

DCU’s Wonder Woman animated feature was a refreshingly contemporary take on the character…

When asked about the potential problems that could arise with showing Wonder Woman getting beaten down by a male antagonist, Refn cited Catwoman as an example where the use of a female nemesis yielded “not particularly good results.” He neglected to mention that the Halle Berry vehicle was also an excellent case of all-around horrible filmmaking  – but, moving on… icon wink Bronson Director Interested In Wonder Woman Movie

So how to solve the issue?  Well, here’s how Refn put it:

“The trick with Wonder Woman is to find that antagonist who worked so well in the Batman concept – his villains are equally if not more exciting than Batman himself.  Here, it’s basically coming up with who would be a great counterpart to Wonder Woman.  Is it her mother who’s the real enemy?  Something that’s biblical in a sense.”

So what do you think?  Does Refn sound like he could be the next Christopher Nolan or Sam Raimi?  Would you like to see him take on Wonder Woman?  Let us know what you think in the comments section below.

  1. Though I’ve heard of this guy, there may be a possibility this might actually work. Just so long as Elektra or Catwoman doesn’t repeat itself, this could get fascinating.

  2. Liv Tyler was perfect but i think she might be too old. Just as long as Lynda Carter gets to play hthe Queen of the Amazons

  3. Skeptical at first first, but after reading the whole interview with him, I am willing to give his vision a shot. He seems like someone who knows what he wants to accomplish with a WW movie and has a strong idea of what Wonder Woman means as a character. That is more than I have heard recently. As a huge Wonder Woman fan, I would rather have her movie made by someone who is passionate about her character and the project than have her introduced second fiddle to all the male heroes in Justice League.

  4. He’s the only guy who actually gets this from what I’m reading and he should be given the opportunity.

  5. next thing to do here is talk about casting. Megan Fox definatley looks the part and proves she can handle action scenes but kinda shot herself in the foot by doing Jonah Hex (i’m a firm believer that an actor cant play 2 different characters in the same superhero universe.)

i think Kristen Bell (if she dyed her hair) could look right for the part. and she could use a more dramatic role for her resume.

Mila Kunis would also be great

    • megan fox said that she wouldn’t do wonder woman because she feels that wonder woman is a lame superhero.

      • Megan Fox is an idiot.

      • i kinda agree with megan fox…

    • Also, Megan Fox is eye candy, not an actress with any respectable sensibilties…The other other two at least have a chance at being convincing…in comparison.

  6. There has never been a movie made about a female hero, that hasn’t had their legend altered. Supergirl title- different history. Elektra title-different history. Catwoman title- different history. Keep the ORIGINAL HISTORY, make it cinematic, you should have a good film. It’s not fair to say or think that you can’t make a film about a female superhero because the studios haven’t done it yet. They’ve made their version of said hero.

  7. I dont like the idea that Hippolyta might be the villain.

  8. I say tweak the script of the animated Wonder Woman movie to better suit live action

  9. Heck YES he should take on this task! For far too long Wonder Woman has taken a back seat to the men of DC. Though those are some good movies too. Sure Whedon is out but lets see what Refn can do. Besides the fans need this film so that the DCE can place her in the J.L. film! As for the vilonce towards women, the animated film put her agenst a god and they duked it out pretty well! With as strong as Wonder Woman is, she I think could handle it. I say make this film!

  10. Refn would bring a unique vision, it’s just whether or not that vision will fit. His back catalogue, while amazing, doesn’t fit Wonder Woman’s story. His interview is encouraging though.

  11. Umm no please. What makes Wonder Woman interesting is her ties to Greek Mythos. Give her a Greek mythology villian to battle don’t just make some one up. The Cartoon was a decent flick just adapt that. Or something along those lines. Wonder woman has Greek mythos on her side some of the greatest characters in history take advantage if that. That is the only way I’ll watch this. I never liked Wonder Woman but I enjoyed the stories involving Greek Mythology it made her books readable. Her mythology is far more interesting than her.

  12. Is that the geekiest picture you could find of the guy? If so, good job :D hahaha

  13. Eu acho que Megan Fox, Sandra Bullock e Jen Love Hewit são os melhores…

  14. laura prepon as WW

    till next time

  15. He seems to have a vision and a direction as to where he would like to take this. He is one filmmaker that actually stood up to the challenge and publicly stated that he would like to take upon this challenge, that takes b*lls. I’d like to see him get a shot. But then again, I would just like to see a Wonder Woman movie be made correctly and give her the much needed respect she deserves! She is very underestimated and it is frustrating and annoying. Hopefully this film will happen sooner rather than later.

  16. In terms of an arch-nemesis, there are two excellent possibilities, both already part of her rogues gallery: Ares (Mars in Roman mythology), the GOD OF WAR!!! You can’t ask for a better opponent for the epitome of female power and egalitarianism. Of course, there’s also Cheetah, a brilliant scientist who gains power but uses it to boost her fragile (though large) ego. What’s even better is the fact that the two caould easily be used in tandem. As for the problems the film’s creation/production has engendered over the years, we may all feel encouraged by the fact that a myth-based hero is debuting relatively soon (Thor), so maybe, there’s more than a little hope for another to arrive on our shores. :)

    • could, not caould…obviously

    • my immediate thought when they started talking about the villain with cheetah, honestly, especially if they’re really iffy about showing a man beating down on a woman protagonist.

ares would be awesome, though, especially since he is such a big villain in the wonder woman mythos.

      • er. was* cheetah

  17. Sounds good. Cast Evangeline Lilly (Kate from LOST) and you could have yourself a hit on your hands.

  18. Karen Cliche “FLASH GORDON” series can make an awesome Wonder Woman and that’s my casting choice opinion. She does look like Alex Ross’s WONDER WOMAN But I do picture as “The Amazing Amazon” fighting off her arch-nemesis enemies. I think Lynda Carter can make a cameo appearance instead of playing the Supporting Character “Queen Hippolyte” to the movie. I say Cate Blanchett or Meryl Streep can play “The Queen of Amazons”. That will be a great idea. Lynda Carter might say no

  19. I always thought that Jennifer Taylor (Chelsea on 2 1/2 Men) would be an awesome WW. Too bad Hollyweird probably thinks she’s too old for the part. She’d be WAYYYY better than Megan Fox. Actually, pretty much ANYONE would be better than Megan Fox.

  20. Sounds like it could work with this guy. Imagine the shambles it be if Brett Ratner, Joss Whedon or Bryan Singer got their hands on it.

  21. Would of been great if Joss would of done it. Joss is not only talented but this is his area of specialty.

  22. I vote for Mischa Barton or Jessica Biel to play Wonder Woman.

    • why don’t you throw Lindsey Lohan or Kim Kardashin into that list, haha. really need someone with a commanding screen presence, can’t think who would be good for it.

      • I know – the one who plays Lois on Smallville, that would work (but would porbably never happen)

  23. I don’t understand the consternation with having a male foe. TAke the lead from the JL animated series – WW got smashed into pavement, flown through buildings, etc primarily by male adversaries just like Superman. If her character is treated the same way I think it speaks more loudly for women’s lib that if she could only have a female foe.

    Maybe I’m misreading the issue?

  24. Someone write a quick script, cast Megan Fox as Wonder Woman… 200 Million at the box office

  25. Erica Durance (Lois on Smallville) is a perfect choice except she wouldn’t fill out the bottom half very well. Seeing here from behind in a swimsuit was soooooo disappointing. And I don’t think she could pull off the black hair. Jennifer Taylor is tall enough but too fragile. Anyway, you gotta remember that WW was an AMAZON. She’s gotta be at least 5’8. Liv Tyler is 5’10 and has the Latina/Island look. Maybe Carla Gugino from Watchmen but she’s just to small. My vote’s for Liv.

  26. I think Evangeline Lily or Mary Elizabeth Winstead would be good picks for this movie.

  27. GAH!! Megan Fox? i don’t think so. so far everyone’s picks are way off. find an unknown who looks the part, that’s how we got Christopher reeves and Lynda Carter remember?
Refn would be terrible in my opinion, his ideas are fruity!!

  28. My vote would be for Evangeline Lilly, only she is 5’5″, so that won’t work. Nevermind. Megan Fox… forget it. Mischa Barton or Jessica Biel? You must really like those German high cheekbones…. next. Karen Cliche? Never seen her. Jennifer Taylor? Who knows? Maybe she could toughen up. Erica Durance? Ain’t gonna happen… She’s Lois Lane. Liv Tyler? Liked her in LOTR, but couldn’t stand her in Inc Hulk (Jen Connely was better). Carla Gugino? Agreed, too small.

Basically, what they need to look for is a tall, muscular, brunette with a greek heritage and bone structure who can act. That shouldn’t be too hard, should it? ;)

I do agree though that no matter what happens, Lynda Carter should play Queen Hippolyte, as a gesture of honor and respect, and she may do it, but only if it happens soon. The clock is ticking.

I say give Nicolas the chance to do it. What’s the worst that could happen? It’s too violent and bombs. Maybe something needs to happen to shake things up and get the studio moving on it. If itdoes poorly, it could kill the property (like Schumacher did to Batman) or it could propel a remake.

Let him try… or I’ll do it myself. lol

  29. I like Refn vision about Wonder woman movie. i say give him a chance to do it. But i still don’t agree with the idea that hippolyta who will become such an antagonist character in the movie. Wonder woman already has such a strong foe that i think can match her from time to time, such as Circe or Devastation wich is suitable for wonder woman counterpart.

i really hope that this movie can really come to the big screen….
