Wonder Woman stars Gal Gadot and Chris Pine have posted a video teasing a global fan event set for this Thursday, May 18, to celebrate the upcoming film. Excitement for the solo movie debut of the legendary DC superhero has been brewing for months now, with Gadot and director Patty Jenkins being the main focus in several interviews and promotional appearances including the MTV Movie & TV Awards touting the film’s release on June 2.
Pine joined the fray a couple weeks back with a memorable hosting gig (including, a musical number mocking superhero actors named Chris) on Saturday Night Live, and following his and Gadot’s appearance at the film’s premiere in Shanghai, China, the actors have paired again to announce a big event to include fans around the globe.
In an tweet from the official Wonder Woman account on Tuesday, Gadot and Pine detailed the event, saying they would be doing live Q&As with fans throughout the day, with Gadot adding, “And we may have a few surprises in store.” See the full announcement below in the video, above.
It’s been a big week for Wonder Woman so far. Following a screening for press that yielded several positive reactions to the film on social media, Gadot, Pine and Jenkins, along with producers Zack and Deborah Snyder, headed to Shanghai for the Chinese premiere, where Zack Snyder confirmed that a Wonder Woman sequel is in development. That’s a huge vote of confidence for the first Wonder Woman solo film, which is projected to take in anywhere from $65 million to $100 million in its opening weekend.
If Wonder Woman meets expectations at the box office, it will certainly be good news for Jenkins, who says she already has ideas for a Wonder Woman sequel. Of course, Jenkins first has the monumental task of winning over the Wonder Woman fanbase, which not only includes fans of the comic book lexicon, but fans of the 1970s TV series starring Lynda Carter in the title role. Jenkins appears to be prepared for the latter, at least, saying previously that she’s included subtle Easter Eggs in the film as way to pay respect to the TV series.
The big benefit for Wonder Woman fans going into the solo origins movie about the Amazon warrior princess, of course, is that they already know Gadot has charisma and physical wherewithal to pull off the role – as she aptly demonstrated in her blazing debut opposite Ben Affleck and Henry Cavill in Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice. The biggest bonus? After what promises to be a memorable debut with Wonder Woman next month, she’ll be back with Justice League in November.
