Charlize Theron has revealed that she had to pass on playing a role in the hit DC Extended Universe movie, Wonder Woman. The film, which stars Gal Gadot as the titular character and was directed by Patty Jenkins, has performed exceptionally well both critically and at the global box office. It’s now the highest grossing live-action film directed by a woman and has pushed the DCEU’s total worldwide box office haul past the $3 billion mark.

Theron, who is known for playing tough warriors like Stella Bridger in The Italian Job and Imperator Furiosa in Mad Max: Fury Road, would have been the perfect fit for a film who propagates feminism like Wonder Woman. As it turns out, Jenkins even reached out to her, offering a role in the movie. Unfortunately, Theron explained that there were some other things she was doing around the same time that the blockbuster was about to get into production, which is why she had to say no.

When she visited The Howard Stern Show (via Batman News) this week, the 41-year-old has elaborated on the reason why she ultimately was not able to do Wonder Woman:

“No, I’m not in Wonder Woman. We’re friends. I think the world of her. We have a mutual respect for each other. She did come to me, and at the time I was either working on something or I don’t know. There was a reason I couldn’t do it.”

If Theron would have said yes to the role in the superhero film, it would have reunited her with Jenkins, who has previously collaborated with Theron on the film Monster. In fact, it was Theron’s stellar performance in the true story-based drama that won her the Oscar for Best Actress, so we know at least know that the two work together quite well.

Although Theron did not give any specific detail regarding what her role in Wonder Woman could have been, it’s not difficult to imagine her as one of the Amazonian warriors in the film. She could have easily joined the ranks of capable and strong women in Jenkins’ movie, like Connie Nielsen’s Hippolyta and Robin Wright’s Antiope.

It doesn’t sound like Theron has too many regrets about passing on the opportunity to appear in Wonder Woman, especially given the number of major projects that are already on her plate. Theron is currently doing the promotional rounds for her upcoming film, Atomic Blonde – an action spy thriller that is set in the late 1980s just before the Berlin Wall fell down, based on the 2012 graphic novel The Coldest City. Theron is also coming off her role as the villainous Cipher in the smash hit The Fate of the Furious and may yet return as the character, in 2019’s Fast & Furious 9.
