Gal Gadot has yet to make her big screen debut as Wonder Woman in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, but news about her solo film keeps rolling in. Filming began this past November, and the cast and studio have been sharing sneak peek photos and casting news with some regularity.

The full story of Princess Diana’s movie adventure is not yet known, but it’s rumored to take place across several timelines. Gadot’s co-star Chris Pine, who will play Steve Trevor, confirmed one of those time periods is set during World War I. The actor promised viewers will be treated to a lush set design with hundreds of extras decked out in historically accurate costumes.

The latest casting news, courtesy of THR, reveals a pivotal role will be filled by an actress who’s no stranger to period dress. Connie Nielsen, best known for her role as Roman Empress Lucilla in the film Gladiator, has been cast as Amazon queen Hippolyta. Early speculation included Nicole Kidman or Robin Wright potentially taking on the character of Wonder Woman’s mother, but Kidman had too many scheduling conflicts and Wright is reportedly taking on a different part in the film.

Filmgoers may also recognize Nielsen from the films Mission to MarsSoldier, and recent arthouse flick Nymphomaniac: Vol. I. She’s also had multi-episode arcs on TV shows The Following and The Good Wife. Along with Wonder Woman, her upcoming movie projects include Stratton and Music, War and Love.

Other actors appearing in the new Wonder Woman solo project for as yet undisclosed roles are David Thewlis (Harry Potter), Danny Huston (Clash of the Titans), Ewen Bremner (Snowpiercer), Elena Anaya (The Skin I Live In), Saïd Taghmaoui (American Hustle), and Lucy Davis (Shaun of the Dead). Patty Jenkins, who was originally supposed to helm Thor 2: The Dark World, will direct the script penned by Jason Fuchs (Holy Rollers).

Kidman as Hippolyta would have been another big-name draw for the film, but a superhero franchise potentially this big probably isn’t going to require additional star power to get people into the theater. Besides, Nielsen is a familiar face with a solid resumé. Although there’s no word on just how prominent a role Hippolyta will have in the film, fans can rest assured that Nielsen has the dramatic chops and screen presence to do it justice.
