The worlds of Wonder Woman and Conan the Barbarian are set to collide in a brand new comic series coming later this year. Acclaimed Wonder Woman writer Gail Simone will be back, teaming up with artist Aaron Lopresti and Dark Horse Comics to see the two legends share the page for the first time ever.
With Wonder Woman being introduced in 1941 and Conan in 1932, you have to question why it has taken so long for the two to crossover into each other’s worlds. With their impressive physiques and god-like strength, the two should be evenly matched when they come together this fall in a bold new adventure.
Arriving late September, the six-issue arc matches the Themiscyrian and the Cimmerian in the ultimate crossover. While fans are already hyped, Simone has spoken out on her excitement for the project and what brought her to the title (you can check out the cover art for the event below, too):
“I love crossovers, I love Wonder Woman, and being able to bring the undisputed greatest warriors of the DCU and Robert E. Howard’s Hyborian Age together for the very first time is a dream come true. A major draw is getting to reunite with the great Aaron Lopresti, whose very favorite things to draw are Wonder Woman and barbarians. Its blades and bracelets, wizards and wonder and I couldn’t be more delighted.”
The story starts as Conan washes ashore in a strange land, and he soon comes across the formidable Princess Diana. Things take a turn for the worse when the duo find themselves dragged into a life of slavery. Similar to how Thor and The Incredible Hulk are forced to first face-off in Thor: Ragnarok, both Diana and Conan will be made to battle in the fighting pits of a slave owner named Dellos. Weaving together the ideas of myths and magic, Wonder Woman and Conan will surely be forced to work together and escape their captors when a dark magic descends.
Simon and Lopresti have previously worked together on one of Wonder Woman’s best-received runs, while the writer is also no stranger to barbarians. Also writing Dynamite’s “soft reboot” of Red Sonja, Simone handled the character’s revised origins and was met with a slew of positive reviews in 2013. Hopes are high for the Wonder Woman and Conan crossover, and DC Entertainment’s Editor-In-Chief Bob Harras sees the importance of both characters:
“Uniting the greatest characters of the DC Universe with some of the most famous and notable characters in pop culture is at the core of the most memorable crossovers we’ve ever done. Gail and Aaron’s series will surely create a new legend for fans and readers to talk about for years to come.”
Vying to be even bigger than that time when Batman went against Superman, DC will cross swords with Dark Horse and hopefully create a new legend for the ages. It certainly beats searching Google for Wonder Woman and Conan to only come across videos of Gal Gadot and Conan O’Brien. With Patty Jenkins’ recent record-breaking Wonder Woman and persistent rumors of a Conan TV series, the timing couldn’t be better to announce the pairing.
The simply-titled Wonder Woman/Conan will release its first issue on September 20.
