[UPDATE: We have the Wolverine trailer, head over to watch it and continue the discussion there.]
I just thought I’d put up a post to discuss the Wolverine trailer for those who might have subjected themselves to The Day the Earth Stood Still this weekend despite my warning.
My buddy over at Movies Online has alerted me to the fact that the trailer will be released online on Monday, December 15th on (ugh) Myspace.

As soon as it’s released we’ll post it up right here for you, so if you can wait a couple of days you won’t have to sit through this weekend’s terrible remake.
I’ve seen the X-Men Origins: Wolverine trailer and I’m very curious to hear what you think about it. I was excited to see it come up, and believe me, I really want to like this movie and for it to be great. The thing is, I found the trailer to be kind of disjointed. It showed a bunch of scenes that give you brief glimpses of many mutants: Gambit, Deadpool, the Blob, Emma Frost and more Sabretooth than the others. There’s also tons of action including one scene that while dramatic, seemed kind of crazy in hindsight – with Wolverine leaping from a vehicle on the ground up towards a helicopter… pretty much “leaping tall buildings.”
Thanks to one of our readers, here’s a great breakdown of what appears in the trailer:
- Ring battle with THE BLOB.
- Gambit doing a “power strike” in the ground with his staff. Lot’s of play with him using it.
- A look at Logan as a child.
- Gambit striking Logan with a playing card that shoots him thru a wall.
- Some “Ice-Girl” frosting herself over for battle.
- Logan propelling himself off a truck, claws unsheathed, to land on a helicopter.
- Logan on motorcycle doing a 180 turn with claws sparking the ground as he uses them as leverage/anchor.
- Liev Schreiber’s portrayal of Sabertooth a bit “out of range” as I see him “too intelligent” for that role as well as too small. He grins to reveal his molars which made me think of him as more of a vampire than a feline. I think this is bad casting.
- A group shot of “The Team” Logan’s a part of.
- Logan popping up out of the tank (after receiving his new powers) with claws all out, muscles glistening and that trademark snarl and growl of his.
The trailer was all over the place and it was hard to figure out what exactly the overall plot of the film will be from it – lots of stuff but it didn’t really form a cohesive whole.
This may seem like overthinking a bloody trailer, but when we bring it to you on Monday you’ll see what I’m talking about.
Anyway, if you HAVE seen it, what did you think?
X-Men Origins: Wolverine opens on May 1, 2009.

The best way I can put it is that it seemed to “cluttered.” I liked most of what I saw, but the whole “team” aspect was kind killed it for me. As far as I understand this will still be a Wolverine-centric film. The scenes between Wolverine and Sabertooth seemed very promising. Everything else kinda looked like crap. But we shall see.
Liev Schreiber as Sabertooth? Noooo!
Yes, he’s a good actor and bad guy but he’s the SAME SIZE as Hugh Jackmuscles.
The scenes with Gambit were way cool.
As far as the trailer being incoherent…Let’s see, Both are special and have lived for a long time, government programs designed to control, girl gets killed, once friends now enemies, payback time. Miss anything?
Oh yeah, Keanu comes in at the end and saves all of humanity…….again.
(For the 3rd time, 4th if you count ‘Chain Reaction’)
I thought it looked good and I plan to see the movie when it’s released, but then what do I know? I actually sat and watched the terrible movie that is, “The Day the Earth Stood Still”. I can only hope this upcoming movie will be better than that lol.
It has Deadpool. That’s all I need to know.
And while I admit that sort of attitude makes me a rather shallow movie-goer, I do end up enjoying many more movies than most of my friends.
Heh, the fact that I enjoyed both the Fantastic Four movies annoys one of my mates so much it nearly makes his head explode…which in itself is entertaining.
Well, since I suffered thru EARTH, revisiting what I saw in WOLVERINE is a good pill to take.
I can’t remember much but I do remember these:
1. Ring battle with THE BLOB.
2. Confused at “young” Logan with claws and doing a two-fisted stabbing on some guy.
3. Gambit doing a “power strike” in the ground with his staff. Lot’s of play with him using it.
4. Gambit striking Logan with a playing card that shoots him thru a wall.
5. Some “Ice-Girl” frosting herself over for battle.
6. Logan propelling himself off a truck, claws unsheathed, to land on a helicopter.
7. Logan on motorcycle doing a 180 turn with claws sparking the ground as he uses them as leverage/anchor.
8. Liev Schreiber’s portrayal of Sabertooth a bit “out of range” as I see him “too intelligent” for that role as well as too small. He grins to reveal his molars which made me think of him as more of a vampire than a feline. I think this is bad casting.
9. A group shot of “The Team” Logan’s a part of.
10. Logan popping up out of the tank (after receiving his new powers) with claws all out, muscles glistening and that trademark snarl and growl of his. Pretty cool but was this too early after receiving his gifts?
That’s about all of the important parts I can remember. I’m sure I’ll remember more. Overall, I LOVED the trailer and it’s mosh pit of images and sounds. For the record, I had not planned to see this movie. I grew up on X-MEN but thought it had played it’s run as a movie and wasn’t interested in anymore of it. Now, I have changed my mind. because of the trailer.
@MBL
That was such a great breakdown of the trailer I hope you don’t mind but I added it to the post above!
Thanks,
Vic
Wait, a young Logan with claws? Does this mean that we’ll see some bone claws in action?
The Trailer was awesome. Seems like it’s at least attempting to be a “serious” movie. Vic, I’m pretty sure the “Ice Girl” is Emma Frost and that was her Diamond form. I was kinda bummed we didn’t get a peak as Dom Mon as Beak…
Hey Vic! No problem my friend. Just wished I could have remembered more. I was caught a bit off guard by how “interesting” it was. The actor they used for THE BLOB was humongous and could have been cgi’d but I doubt it. GAMBIT actually worked for me since Hollywood needed to “humanize” XMEN characters with a broader less imaginative audience.
More points:
11. Logan hopping off an amphibian transport during a WW2 scene.
12. SaberT and Logan in front of a firing squad.
And FAIR WARNING! Bootleg copy online already but I’ll wait for Vic to get it HERE……as should everyone.
I want that jacket!!!
@JessSayin
Dude, you should post more…that made me laugh.
I don’t know, this might be good. I have my doubts, since it is Fox making it and they are not following the exact Marvel universe (the Weapon X program didn’t involve Blob nor Gambit, if I am remembering right).
@Mandarr
Man, what is wrong with us? Vic warned us about DTEST and we didn’t listen. I fell asleep in some parts; I don’t even remember Gleese’s character getting killed nor the scene with the dumb line, “If you die, the earth lives”. I didn’t have a problem with Gort until it became a stupid…SPOILER WARNING!!! SPOILER WARNING!!! DANGER WILL ROBINSON!!! DANGER!!!

a cloud of nano-bots. There were spheres all around the planet for goodness sake; why didn’t they just have hundreds of Gort’s (named by humans BTW, not the name given by Klaatu) doing their destruction thing?!
I want Gort to visit Fox studios.
The young Logan thing is from Origin were he first discovers his bone claws and the guy is Thomas Logan his father.
Wolvie is too tall and too clean, the previous X-MEN stories were centered around Wolverine too much, the rest of the X-MEN were just cardboard furniture, so this isn’t much of a surprise. Sabertooth’s smaller, what a shocker, what happened to the giant beast in X-MEN 1? I don’t see what Gambit and Deadpool can bring to this movie except being cameos and sell toys?
The trailer was very cool. It was kind of all over the place but it was non the less the best trailer this year. Besides Watch Men. I just have one question. In the trailer Logan as a Kid sprouts claws. Were they covered with metal or was it bone? Because if it was covered in metal, there is gonna be huge problem with Wolverine fans.
Spoiler!
In the original script for the movie the claws are bone. After the apparent murder of Silverfox by Sabertooth, Logan and Sabertooth fight in a bar and Sabertooth breaks Logan’s claws off.
I wonder if Alpha Flight will be a part of this movie? Or if after the credits it shows Wolverine squaring off with the Hulk…. And did they just decide to drop the Patch personna???? No matter what I’ll be there for this one!
Nuff said
Vic, I thought we all complained about trailers revealing the entire plot.
If we don’t know exactly how it goes – isn’t that good?
I thought the trailer was very exciting and they answered one of my issues that I wrote about in my article: The glowing cards and staff which looked wicked.
Now the next HUGE issue is whether or not Gambit has his trademark accent.
Also, another important obvservation (or lack thereof) is how deadpool/ryan reynolds was noticeable absent from this trailer. He was also barely featured in the comic con footage so I’m thinking they’re saving him as they don’t want to spoil it. They must think he is awesome as they’re already talking a spinoff for him.
@ Dannyboy
Pretty sure that the ‘Patch’ persona only came about when Logan was hiding in Madripor.
He had been a member of the X-Men for a while at that stage.
I thought sabertooth died though?
@ Billygirdler
Sabertooth died recently in the comics, and he just fell into the water in the X-Men movie. (Didn’t see the body so it don’t count!)
Death ain’t all that permanent in the Marvelverse anyhow.
Besides, this is a pre X-men movies story.
@Rob
I don’t want spoilers in a trailer, but it’s nice to have a sense of what the movie is ABOUT. People say the trailer to “Seven Pounds” is confusing, but it gives you the gist: Man commits some terrible act in the past and is attempting to repent for his actions by bestowing a gift upon someone worthy.
Vic
I agree Vic. I have always limited myself to one trailer for any movie I want to see. Reciting lines or not being pleasingly surprised at a scene while watching a movie is pretty stupid. Open the Xmas presents on Xmas and don’t sneak a peek in your parent’s closet. It only makes you a “know-it-all” later on in life.
They Are Bones, they are bones! Yesss!!!!!!!!!!!
I was wondering if the Ice Glowing woman isn’t diamond Lil?
Someone who’s gonna be a future Alpha Flight member?
So far the studios have done a lot of things that don’t follow the comic storyline. So if this isn’t ICE WOMAN? Then who is it?
Deadpool in the film looks cheaper then Elektra, a B-grade reject from straight to DVD Flicks? I hope the film will feature him with a mask and his crude healing factor? And a red and blac costume worthy of a dark knight and ninja.
I hope Gambit isn’t an evil character in this film? So far he looks cool but a bit too clean, his eyes need to be glowing red and smoky.
Blob looks cool !! The best thing I have ever seen on screen.
Better then the X-MEN 3 Juggernaut.
I’m wondering if John Wraith (Kestrel) and Maverick are in this film?
If I did the movie myself, I would end this film by having Logan wondering in the woods and getting shot by James Mc Donald Hudson and Heather. This could also lead to a spin off with one of my favourite team: ALPHA FLIGHT.
(Make mine Marvel !!)
Fox seems to forget that X-MEN works for a reason that they seem to be throwing out. They aren’t superheroes… they are MUTANTS. Huge difference. Outcasts of normal society, freaks. Here, they are just good looking people with powers.
BIGGEST CASE IN POINT: GAMBIT
What made Gambit so unique were his black eyes with red pupils that ignited when his powers activate. Though a good looking cat in the comics, his eyes made him abnormal among human standards. His eyes are such a “unique” visual which would have been so bold on screen, of course are removed by the film makers. I know without a doubt they cast Taylor because of how his eyes looked in The Covenant [see the motorcycle fight scene] and you have a basis for how these things get put together by the suits. Leaving Gambit’s eyes out makes the film lackluster in its appeal.
CASE IN POINT: DEADPOOL
Ryan Reynolds in a boring red shirt and a couple of swords does not equal cool. It equals uninventive and dull. I understand they are paying for face-time with RR, I get that… we all had to bare the brutal casting of Topher as Venom and watch him mug through the minimal time Venom was on screen. And, I can’t fully make the assumption that we won’t see DP in full costume yet, but let’s admit… it does look bleak. Deadpool’s costume, even if for 70% of the film, was just from the neck down in red and black leather would be visually hard core, and it wouldn’t hurt RR to have some scars on his face for this film.
LAST CASE: THE LOOK
I’ve seen Tsotsi, and visually its a masterpiece of dark edge. Cinematic and wide in scope. Wolverine looks like bad 70’s television. Overly lit, no mood. Sets look like sets on soundstages and not environments.
Can usually see the arc of a film by the trailer. IRONMAN was case in point that all the right notes were hit. This one, misses on all of them.
