Fanboy Rant: Has Fox Ruined Deadpool? Is Gambit Next?

After Fox aired its three-part series of 60-second TV spots for X-Men Origins: Wolverine earlier this week, my excitement level got pushed even higher than it already was for this movie. These three trailers, titled “Outcasts,” “Brothers” and “Legends” showed us many scenes from Wolverine’s past as well as a pile of characters and action sequences.
I was so happy to see Gambit tossing around charged up cards and was really growing on the idea of Liev Schreiber as Sabretooth. I had even completely moved on in the idea of separating Fox’s X-Men films from the continuity of the Marvel Comics and cartoons.
That excitement all came crashing down today as Screen Rant writer Carl Lee came upon the following images of the Deadpool action figures from the Hasbro toy line for the movie.

And Giant Killer Squid has a clearer image of the toy above.
What is with the blades coming out of his arms? Are those taped on or are they some Weapon X modification similar to Wolverine’s? How much did they really screw up this character or is there a chance his costume will still be in the film at some point? I can’t really see how going from awesome weapon-covered red and black suit is replaced by topless scarred dude wearing purple pants.
When I saw Deadpool looking like he was scarred in the trailer, I thought that’s probably just one scene in the movie where he wasn’t wearing his trademark costume… Perhaps it was before he even got the costume. In my mind, there was no possible way they could not have his amazing looking costume in this movie. I mean, it’s already there for them in the comics and in thousands of images online. It’s muted, with it’s red and black color scheme so it’s not some outfit that would look outlandish in a live action film.
All they have to do is buy the materials and have the costume designers put it together. Even I could do that with a fraction of the budget they probably get to produce the outfits.
Here’s a screen capture of Deadpool from the trailer and it’s this design they chose to feature as the toy of the character – This likely means that Ryan Reynolds will not be sporting the infamous Deadpool red and black outfit.

So, my question is why? Does this design look better? No. Maybe the toy will sell better than one that actually looks like the character? Nope, that can’t be it either.
This potential colossal failure on the part of those making this film has me very worried for how badly they may ruin my personal favorite, Gambit. We already know they ignored his unique eye color but from the trailers they did add the glowing effect to items that he charges (notably his staff and cards). But, what they’ve not shown us is a single scene of Taylor Kitsch actually talking as Gambit.
My worries are that they may have completely dropped the trademark Cajun accent which to me is absolutely essential for doing this character justice. In The X-Movies, they completely ruined the Colossus character by not making him Russian and they also screwed up Pyro the same way.
Why are they bothering to include these characters if they are intentionally distancing them from what made them so popular in the first place? The reasons fans wanted them in this movie are being shattered and now it’s really starting to bother me.
What do you think of the new Deadpool and do these changes bother you?
X-Men Origins: Wolverine opens May 1, 2009.

Around the web:

That’s wayyyyyyyyy different. Hulk wasn’t only known to comic book fans. He had his own show. Alot more people know him more than Deadpool. That being said, Logan doesn’t wear his spandex. Just wait till you read Vic’s review if you don’t want to “waste” your money, or if you think this will ruin your childhood. I’ll be there first day and I’m pretty sure alot of people will be also
@Vic
Sorry about the “inflammatory language”. I tend to get on a roll with my ranting,(after all the site is called screenrant, and not screenamicablydisagree) but it just astounds me that companies like Fox keeping the rites to otherwise excellent franchise(X-men, Fantastic Four, Daredevil, Elektra)doesn’t put more people that claim to be “fans” up in arms! They’re killing some of my favorite characters(literally if you’ve seen X3) and replacing it with these crappy abortions of a shell of what made the character great. Deadpool belongs in this film, he deserves to be. But he should be Deadpool, not Baraka meets Peter Petrelli. I don’t know what’s scarier, the more bad descriptions we’re getting of this film, or some people’s sheep-like approach to saying, “well it’ll be good anyway.” Its like they don’t have their own opinions, they just swallow what the studios spoonfeed them and regurgitate it. And on screenrant of all places. Sheep, I say! The same kind of people that keep Judd Apatow working, because they’ll laugh at what they’re told is funny.
Just to be clear with everyone Wolverine didn’t have his costume in the X films or in this one. Batman has never had his comic costume accurately put on the big screen. Spiderman and Ironman both had some changes to their costumes as well. God forbid they touch deadpool though. I’m not blindly following like sheep and saying the movie is gonna be great I havn’t seen the thing. I’m simply saying I’ll get all up in arms when they screw up a character not when the use a different outfit. Story and character are far more important than a costume. If the movie sucks it will be because the story was bad or the characters were poorly constructed not because the costume wasn’t exactly the same as the comics.
@huntthejest WTF is wrong with you??? Obviously something is working right? You know how much money Fox has made off of X-Men right? Of course we have our own opinions but the fcking movie hasnt even came out yet! Some people arent little whiners like you. If the movie is perfect who cares about a costume. Alot of people complained about Heath Ledger being chosen to play Joker LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL is all i have to say to those people. Leave your judgements till the actual film comes out. Its funny how you call us sheep, but more than half of the people are the ones complaining, wouldnt that make YOU a sheep?? BTW if you dont laugh your ass off during one of Judd Apatow’s films something is wrong with you, that man can make a box full of burning puppies seem funny. Nuff said.
@Daniel F, good point, Batman doesnt wear armor in the comics. But it works out on film. They even changed Nite Owls costume for Gods sake! Some things just dont translate from paper to film.
Oscar,
I never said I was going to Boycott the film or that these changes ruined my childhood.
But its not just about the costume.
Fox has an inconsistent record with movies based on Marvel characters .
So,when I hear a report like this
My alarm bells start going off .
I wonder ,
What ELSE have they changed?
I have just as much right to my concerns as others do do to support the film fully and without reservations.
@Gary, all im trying to say is that people should hold their judgement till the movie comes out. I mean the trailers look awesome, why get worried about something that isnt even for sure anyways? He can still wear his mask, you can see he has his reddish pants on, and from the trailers it looks like he wears alot of red. Has Fox came out and said that he wont be wearing his mask??? We already saw it in Fantastic Four 2, everyone went nuts when they heard Galactus was gonna be a cloud, in the end he didnt look that bad(the movie sucked though) and the reason was that they were saving him for the Silver Surfer spin-off, this might be the case here, they can just be saving his costume for the spin-off.
Yes , it didnt look too bad ,
but Galactus is NOT a cloud!
and thats a perfect example of what I am talking about .
Fox didnt care they gutted Galactus.
GALACTUS!
A primal force in the Marvel Universe .
and look at the result.
Right now, the FF franchise is stalled at best.
I will see the film .
But I think Fox is sending the fanbase mixed signals,
So ,I will approch it with caution .
Gotta admit a super-giant dude far larger than a planet would like extremely silly in a live action movie.
Vic
Gary:
I had crabs the day those scenees in F42 were shot. Okay, I had indigestion after consuming a ringed planet in the Crab Nebula. Sorry, the gas cloud is the best stand-in Fox could find. A tip of the antler-helmet to that Kirby the Cloud, who did a stellar job.

The mighty Galactus did not know he could double post. All hail the Consumer of Worlds.
lol Sylar,
@ Daniel F,
I didn’t say this movie will be good or bad. Definitely re-read what you wrote and my article.
What I said was my anticipation for this film has dwindled and characters that are so awesome in the comics, awesome enough to be characters in a high-budget featured film have been weakened, damaged or ruined in my eyes.
It may be completely fine for you if studios do this, but I expect more and can’t accept what I believe is mediocrity. That’s all X3 was and I don’t support it.
And remember, we don’t know for sure if his trademark costume or some variant of it will not be featured in this film.
There is still hope and if they are in talks about a Deadpool spinoff, there must be something to that effect.
Vic,
You have a point about Galactus.
It could be that I was still stinging from the first FF film.
on the other hand, Rob has a point about X3.
that is reason enough to be concerned about this costume news.
I will keep an open mind.
But I think Reagan got it right.
“trust but verify”.
And yes I know he was quoting Gorbachev!
Waaaaaay too much information about this film is being dug up and everyone is trying to judge and interpret the finished product without the information necessary to do that. i.e. the actual film.
This film is being released by Fox Studios, do you know what that means? Nothing new. It means an ill-informed attempt at mass-appeal before source material accuracy or justice to the characters. Look at the track record — in my opinion, a true marvel fan — no superhero movie from Fox has ever been anything more than alright. The X-Men films, for me, get judged to the effect of “Well… That one is better then X3″
Fox is evil… and they own our precious, story rich comic book properties. Looking at any of the movies, even of the characters of which I am not even a fan — if filmamkers are having a remote knowledge of these characters at the least i.e. Elektra, Daredevil, Fantastic Four etc. it seems impossible to me to not have adequate, quality stories to draw from and produce an amazing movie. But… those movies are beyond crap. Somehow.
Face it, only a few comic book films have ever really been taking seriously until recently. The Dark Knight & Iron Man are groundbreaking, The Incredible Hulk does not fall far behind in quality, though it is overlooked.
The Spirit was next to come out and it was a joke and audiences responded appropriately. How hollywood thinks that man is still fit to direct is beyond me.
My point is that 2008 marked the first time that so many comic book films were released and well recieved both critically and financially meaning that studios can consider them ‘serious’ now. They are THE hot commodity.
It certainly looks as if Watchmen will acknowledge the requirement of quality that the audience expects and I also think that of Wolverine.
I think we are trying to overanalyze every little detail of this film and we haven’t even seen it.
The toys could mean anything. ANYTHING. They are toddler toys at that.
Yes, much has been changed in this film and unnecessarily so but it is still possible for the film to be awesome!
I am a Marvel fan, X-Men fan and Wolverine is my favorite, followed by Magneto and then Gambit. Gambit was dishonorably denied his role in the X-Men trilogy (but some how there was room to make up charcaters) and how Wolverine and Sabretooth wern’t at each others throats as soon as they saw each other is beyond me. No Deadpool and Gambit don’t belong in this timeline but c’mon it is Fox.
As a fan, motified by that fact that Fox owns some of the best comic book character film rights – you have to admit – ‘Wolverine’ looks pretty damn good.
I am keepin’ the faith in Gavin Hood and Jackman (isn’t he producing?). I think that any smart stuido executive would realize that it is time to amp up the quality on our superhero pictures and that just anything won’t fly.
That said, after I see the film, if for some reason Deadpool has blades comming out of his arms (yeah, that’ll be great for the spin off) or Gambit talks like a little *%*& instead of a badass Cajun I will be pissed too. The thought of it pisses me off.
But I haven’t seen the film. Give it a chance man!
Deadpool. He is not the main focus! It is not titled ‘Future Spinoff Hopefuls Origins: Deadpool’ it is Wolverine. And he is not scarred in the trailer. He dons the mask to cover his scarred face so…. if that hasn’t happened yet… why does he need his mask. Besides that is a great filmmaking choice, show him as a cocky pretty boy who then becomes horrifically scarred. Way more effect then just starting out with the mask. He looks sick with those swords though! I think they casted perfectly.
Gambit. I’m sorry, there is no way around the fact that he needs to have his accent. Hey, how do we know his eyes won’t light up at all?
Wolverine. Changed his claws. Good. They Make more sense and it is more like the comic. Bone claws – don’t like ‘em but I can accept them if the movie is awesome. Same goes for making James and Victor brothers.
Sabretooth. I think Liev has the serialistic sinisterness to pull off a rich embodiment of Victor Creed.
This film looks action packed, with a bunch of awesome characters and it has a rich, anticipated screen story to carry us through the whole thing.
Be there May 1st! If this movie blows I will be right here complaining and maybe even boycott Fox but until then, stop trying to dismantle every shred of a possibility that comes our way to make them film appear bad. The truth is we have no idea!
Get ‘em Wolverine!
X3 is no excusse to flip out about a costume. X3 sucking had nothing to do with costumes. It was a poorly constructed story that was all over the place, filled with pot holes and had very little character development. The very best scene in the film was only able to struggle with a meh. X3 only looked ok in it’s trailers anyway Wolverine looks great so far. If it ends up like x2 great if it ends up like X3 well that sucks, but so far I judge by what I see and not what I don’t see. I seen a great bunch of trailers. The costume does not make the movie. Where was the out rage when Batman wasn’t wearing the Grey chest and leg piece? Where was the outrage when Batman was wearing multi pieced together armor black pieces? Where was the outrage when Wolverine was put in a leather suit and nothing covering his face. I like dead pool but I would rather see the wolverine head mask than the deadpool one and I’m not even outraged about that. Oh I almost forgot where was the angry long rants about the tumbler and not any form of the batmobile that has ever been used.
There was outrage regarding some of those costume changes. Said changes were never as drastic as this though (They went with a more realistic feel on Batman, so the armor was an easy sell. Wolvie fans have always been exposed to Logan unmasked). Deadpool = mask + costume + personality. Here, the external facets have been removed. Batman still looked like Batman, Wolverine still had the claws and muttonchops.
X3 was not about the costumes it was about complete misuse of characters and therefore, plot lines.
Just like this wolverine movie, they threw in extra characters (done poorly) just to hit notes on what they thought were popular characters: Jamie Madrox, the Phoenix, Juggernaut, Colossus, Angel etc.
It’s not just about the costumes either, it’s about the characters. In some cases, the costume is a key part in defining that character (Gambit and Deadpool for example).
If Gambit, does not have his accent or his trademark eyes, is he Gambit? His accent made him who he was: “The Ragin’ Cajun”.
Personally, I’m not bent out of shape about costumes, Batman or otherwise – but that could be because I’m not a huge fan of these characters. Batman’s changes made sense to me for the world of the movie, as did his vehicle. Yellow spandex in the X-Men movies would have made the comedy a joke.
In comic books things don’t have to be functional – in a real world setting, they do.
In a side note, with the “reality” they’re injecting into comic books these days, if you step back and take a hard look, now things can look sily even in the comic books themselves.
When the Avengers get together for a meeting, why would they all be sitting around a table wearing masks if they all know who everyone is?
Vic
So the way I see it,if they can mess something up as simple as a costume on a character that’s not even supposed to really be in the film, what makes anyone think the they are gonna get the details of Deadpool’s personality correct?
The question with all of these movies is “why change…?”,in this case it’s Deadpool’s costume. The obvious answer is because they can,and there won’t be any real repercussions from it.We can all complain about how they changed this and changed that, but at the end of the day,we will all shell out 10 bucks to see it,and maybe buy it when it comes out on DVD/BluRay.
Until we as a consumer take a stand and say that we won’t put up with mediocrity, the movie industry will keep raping the comics and other stories that we love, and laugh all the way to the bank while doing it.and they wonder why there’s so much illegal downloading these days,it’s because people don’t have enough faith that movies are going to live up to there expectations.
Or I could be completely wrong and this could turn out to be one of the best movies of the year.
Comic book visuals & props often do not make the best cinematic visuals & props. Comic book sense does not always make film sense. I can’t believe that some people are attempting to judge ‘Wolverine’ based on that fact that a supporting character’s comic book costume may or may not appear in a film not about him…?
The perfect comic book film compromises and meets somewhere in between that of the comics and that of ‘reality’. It really looks like Wolverine is trying, stop badgering it!
As far as the article goes:
Yes, Woilverine-Deadpool man is ridiculous and Gambit, dear boy, Gambit needs his accent and I would love for him to wear a trench coat at some point. : )
Let’s all look forward to the more realistic remakes that will surely come in ten or twenty years. Worked for the Batman franchise, it’ll work for the Marvel films, haha.
@ arrell
Actually,it won’t work for Marvel films because about 95% of there books aren’t based in reality.
Punisher,Nomad,The Nam,they are more reality based with their characters, but how can you make Ghost Rider more “realistic”?
Big friggin’ surprise. What were people expecting, honestly? Just look at what they did to Wolverine, and worse, the whole X-Men – puttin’ them ALL in all black, psuedo dominatrix leather! They don’t even give Logan his cool, brown suit which would look great in a movie. And even worse, look at Bullseye from Daredevil. Or if you want to talk DC, look at what they did to Batman’s look. If you like any of those things, you shouldn’t be complaining. But this is hollywood, and this is what happens. Sucks. I know it does.
…SOMEONE will get it right one day.
@Longshanks: good point. The only thing I can think of is that they could go down the route of ’300′ or ‘Sin City’. Attach more emphasis to good drama rather than action (while maintaining visual brilliance).
I disagree Longshanks it could work. Maybe not on the same level as TDK, but they could still go more realistic with their films. You can make any comic MORE realistic than it is it’s just a question of how realistic you can go with it.
WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF !!!!!!!!
the could at least updated the costume to a more modern stand point, like the
ironMan/SpiderMan/BatMan/Blade/WATCHMEN!/
For god sakes the dont havta scratch the original concept all together, i mean obviusly where not gunna see huge jackman in Yellow Spandex(thank god).
but at least a modern concept he looks Like a Mortal Kombat Charecter For the Love of Galactus, i wish it was just a VideoGAME Based figure. but all this is is like a Huge middle finger from fox say’in “ha! ive got ur Beloved Comicbook Charecter that you all no and love and we’r gunna F**K him up !”
if this gose on who knows every one is gunna have adamantium attachments.
just wait Blobe might have sum kind of Blade that Slides out from under his Huge MAN_BooBs.
all ranting aside this angers me, and i hope theres at least 1 scene that really relates 2 our loved “Merc. with a Mouth”.
i ment “BLOB”, not “Blobe”.
dyslexia’s a B!+{H
