Fanboy Rant: Has Fox Ruined Deadpool? Is Gambit Next?

After Fox aired its three-part series of 60-second TV spots for X-Men Origins: Wolverine earlier this week, my excitement level got pushed even higher than it already was for this movie. These three trailers, titled “Outcasts,” “Brothers” and “Legends” showed us many scenes from Wolverine’s past as well as a pile of characters and action sequences.
I was so happy to see Gambit tossing around charged up cards and was really growing on the idea of Liev Schreiber as Sabretooth. I had even completely moved on in the idea of separating Fox’s X-Men films from the continuity of the Marvel Comics and cartoons.
That excitement all came crashing down today as Screen Rant writer Carl Lee came upon the following images of the Deadpool action figures from the Hasbro toy line for the movie.

And Giant Killer Squid has a clearer image of the toy above.
What is with the blades coming out of his arms? Are those taped on or are they some Weapon X modification similar to Wolverine’s? How much did they really screw up this character or is there a chance his costume will still be in the film at some point? I can’t really see how going from awesome weapon-covered red and black suit is replaced by topless scarred dude wearing purple pants.
When I saw Deadpool looking like he was scarred in the trailer, I thought that’s probably just one scene in the movie where he wasn’t wearing his trademark costume… Perhaps it was before he even got the costume. In my mind, there was no possible way they could not have his amazing looking costume in this movie. I mean, it’s already there for them in the comics and in thousands of images online. It’s muted, with it’s red and black color scheme so it’s not some outfit that would look outlandish in a live action film.
All they have to do is buy the materials and have the costume designers put it together. Even I could do that with a fraction of the budget they probably get to produce the outfits.
Here’s a screen capture of Deadpool from the trailer and it’s this design they chose to feature as the toy of the character – This likely means that Ryan Reynolds will not be sporting the infamous Deadpool red and black outfit.

So, my question is why? Does this design look better? No. Maybe the toy will sell better than one that actually looks like the character? Nope, that can’t be it either.
This potential colossal failure on the part of those making this film has me very worried for how badly they may ruin my personal favorite, Gambit. We already know they ignored his unique eye color but from the trailers they did add the glowing effect to items that he charges (notably his staff and cards). But, what they’ve not shown us is a single scene of Taylor Kitsch actually talking as Gambit.
My worries are that they may have completely dropped the trademark Cajun accent which to me is absolutely essential for doing this character justice. In The X-Movies, they completely ruined the Colossus character by not making him Russian and they also screwed up Pyro the same way.
Why are they bothering to include these characters if they are intentionally distancing them from what made them so popular in the first place? The reasons fans wanted them in this movie are being shattered and now it’s really starting to bother me.
What do you think of the new Deadpool and do these changes bother you?
X-Men Origins: Wolverine opens May 1, 2009.

Around the web:

Uh guys, we already see Deadpool in the red and black costume minus the mask with no scars in the extended trailer.
Granted for how long in the actual film is anyone’s guess.
everyone is so upset about gambits accent and know one is conserned with the fact that they seem to have messed up the time line, thus destroying the posability of him ever being romanticly involved with rouge(he would be far to old). also the eyes were a huge thing,everyone loved those eyes they are as much a part of the character as his powers. And any actor can where contacts. as for deadpool. it seem likely they are going to complitly abandon the comics and try to put him thru the same prosegure as logan (based on the scar patterns and tarcoten claws)but without yet having the healing powers of wolverine he can’t handle the pain and the monstrosity he’s become it worps his mind and turns him into one of the films villans.. i hope thats not the way they go with it but i have watched FOX crush my childhood three times before with this seires.
I’m afraid…….very afraid. The source of the problem here isn’t Fox. The source of the problem is Marvel. Why do they keep allowing other film studios to butcher their intellectual property? Both Lions Gate and Fox have taken revered characters and completely ruined them by straying from the source material. If you have your own studio, why are you contracting other ones out? At least Warner Brothers and DC have a good relationship……
yes marvel should be held accountable, but at this point i think they are trying any thing to revive the story of the x-men; like new directers and a popular cast the even gave us Gambit like a box of chocolate and some flowers. they fail to see that the production company is more conserned with new fans who know nothing of the charicters and just see cool powers,rather than the long time fans who notice when the change things. there’s more of them than there are of us unfortenitly, and thats where the money is(in the pokets of the magority)
I always found it funny about the Spider-man films with him always taking off the mask to show emotion. I find it hilarious because acting is not just about moving your mouth. It is about expression and gestures. If a mime can express a story and feelings through hand gestures and body movement, why not a character with a mask on? We do it all the time, when we are exhausted we have a certain pose or expression for example.
Deadpool is a very expressive character is he not, so, when talks or cracks jokes have him express it through gestures. Right? It is the fundamentals of acting is it not?
For the blades on his arms, which I am guessing work like Logan’s claws. I always figured Sabretooth should have retractable claws, way back in the comics. But since they are on Deadpool, it kind of works for the character for me personally. Makes him much more deadlier and imagine the one-liners?
In the comic books, expressions were shown by body gestures and by Italics, but this isnt a comic book, its live action. Maybe its just me, but looking at the way Ryan Rynolds makes his wise cracks, half of the hilarity is his facial expressions, and thats why I think that they are showing him with out the mask. Yes Spiderman does take his mask off, but its only to enhance the emotion that the directer is trying to achieve.
A lot of Spider-man’s “costume scenes” weren’t even Toby Maguire. I remember watching a documentary where most all of the action scenes were done by martial artists using wire-work.
I thought Ryan Reynolds portrayal of Hannibal King in Blade Trinity was a dead ringer for Deadpool. I’m sure this figured into the casting choice.
@ Drew: it’s also much easier to ‘enhance’ the emotion when you don’t have a mask covering your face, haha.
This maskless business really is a cop-out. The team at Marvel obviously didn’t see ‘V for Vendetta’.
I have read all the posts so far, and it seems people are forgetting a few major issues. Firstly, the majority of people who will see this movie have not read a comic book and don’t really know of any of the other charcters. Therefore the movie companies can ‘re-interpret’ the characters how they please. Secondly, most actors are not going to be in a movie if the audiance can not see their face for the majority of the time. Thirdly, this is a comic book movie so anything that happens is not part of the comic book time line. So I say lets just hope it is a good movie, otherwise we are not going to see another x-men movie for a very long time.
@ Ian,
We know Gambit doesn’t belong in this film but I’ve come to accept that a long time ago. What I wanted from them on is for them to do his character justice and they’ve already dropped the eyes which was bad. The one thing I’m holding onto is the Cajun accent.
If they do not do that, then I give up.
@J BIZ
Unfortuately, Marvel sold both the Fantastic Four and X-men universe of characters to FOX. FOX has “modified” the X-men world and made a huge amount of fanboys very upset. Until Marvel buys back the rights of there lose characters, we are screwed.
Look at what happened to Typhoid Mary in the Elektra movie.
Marvel needed money and they sold out to Fox. Fox warps everything it touches into a PG nightmare. Now marvel has lost all control and I’m certain that this movie diverges greatly from the source material. I’ll watch it for the effects and so I can annoy my wife by telling her all the things they changed. Gotta get your jollies somewhere.
I maintain my original take on this movie from mmonths ago
It in no way can be any good.
They are taking all the wrong elements and playing them up for this film – almost the X3 Ratner move of jam as many mustants as you can in there with crazy over the top comicbook action and worry about character (like SINGER did) later.
Not to mention following ‘stupid’ (IMHO) writing from the comics in the 90s with the whole BONE claw thing.
Wolverine history stopped for me about
1994 when he was still cool and not overexposed (ie – Marvel’s WHORE character appearing in multiple titles X related titles and other Marvel books galore).
His name is Logan
His claws are metal and were never bone
Saberooth was SUPPOSED to be his father when they inrtoduced the character, not his brother or half brother
He has lost all the mysitque that made him cool in the first place.
I have never been a fan or Gambit or figured out just WHY he became so popular. As for Deadpool, he was always pretty neat but c’mon – no way in hell could they adapt character that unique for the screen and actually do it justice.
Two things: @Vic thank God for shutting Oscar up on that one. I mean, to say we should be happy we have a good actor that can’t do the accent has gotta be the dumbest thing I’ve heard today, and I work in the service industry! Good actors should at least be able to do accents. Externals are some of the easiest devices in an actor’s arsenal, including expressions, physical modifications, and-accents. With the resources of Hollywood(speech coaches) that makes it all the easier to get an authentic accent. I’ve met actors in community theatres that can nail accents from anywhere on the world, and they don’t get millions of dollars for what they do, they do it because they love it, and they’re good at it. I hate Fox studios.
2)The mask arguments are void. Refer to my first point in this post. Good actors convey things with more than just their face. And Spider-man wore his mask the entire film(almost). Besides, Deadpool is a supporting character. His costume is iconic, part of what makes him recognizable as Deadpool. If they tamper with his origin, his trademarks, his appearance, and personality, might as well make up a new character instead of ruin the old one(X3?) I’m ready for Marvel to get back the X-men rights and restart the franchise. They should make their own films, and let Fox nowhere near them. Besides, Hugh Jackman needs to get over the whole, “I’m Wolverine” thing. He did a good job, but he’s got enough talent to do other things, and the X-men keep getting raked over the coals in favor of more Wolverine screen time. This is what a costumed Deadpool would come across as on-screen, and that’s fine by me. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FujVOhVVzUM&feature=PlayList&p=449B1B56A82D65CA&index=0
What’s weird about this mask argument is that the character wears a mask in the comics but we still know exactly what’s going on. His dialogue is what makes him, him… Why wouldn’t that work on screen when you have even more to work with since its live-action and we have background music, etc.
And I agree,
I hate the idea of bone claws and I think that was a poor retcon for Wolverine in the 90s when they did that.
I think many are getting sick of Wolverine being in every Marvel comic, specifically in 6 different X-Books. I’ve said this and explained the reasons why in a previous post here on SR but what made him special and a fan-favourite back in the day has been lost a while ago.
@huntthejest
I didn’t “shut up Oscar” on that one, I just pointed out that it didn’t have to be one or the other… there is a third choice.
Let’s not use inflammatory language here.
Vic
I am very close to my head exploding. This is absolute pathetic fanboy craziness. This is pathetic so you don’t care if the film is good and you don’t care if they nail he personality of the character 100%. If the costume isn’t right you hate the movie before you even see it. That’s just pathetic. I have been reading comics for years and watching comic book movies as well. It’s simple things get changed it happens. If Deadpool still acts like him self and movie has a great story they could put him in Silk boxers for all I care.
As for the Spiderman defense well that’s simply a terrible argument. In all three films Peter Parker had a larger role than Spiderman and that leaves us with a large chunk of the film that you can see his face with out a mask. Deadpool would be in his mask at all times.
@Daniel F
There’s nothing “pathetic” about it. Rob didn’t speak to any other points in the film, he didn’t say if the film is good but they don’t use the costume it’ll suck. He’s just asking why include characters from the comics – inserting them into the film DUE to their popularity in order to draw audiences and then NOT be faithful to that same character.
If I see any more comments throwing around terms like “pathetic,” “stupid” or any other such insulting terms, I’ll just delete them.
Vic
Vic ,
I think thats precisely the problem.
they go forward with these adaptations
stricly because of the poularity of the characters. without doing any prior research about the charactersthemselves.
they know these characters are popular.
They have no idea WHY we like them.
@All
Deadpool Is a funny,sick,smart a** that could destroy your entire world with the pull of a trigger and a flick of his wrist. He also has the great power to crack us up with crazy antics and dialog. That’s what makes Deadpool, Deadpool. While the costume does look cool in the comics, that does not necessarily make the character ( unless your Iron Man and that is your main focus of power). People who are terribly concerned about his costume should be more concerned with his persona. If you really wanna get technical and nit pick wouldn’t deadpool know he was in a movie( Referring to his continuous knowledge that he is in a comic). In my opinion ( just my thought) I feel that Ryan Reynolds will do an excellent job as deadpool. If the outfit looks cheesy then i will be a little thrown off, but i’m sure he will make up for in in the classic Deadpool that we all know and try to love( even though he is a sick pervert who ties up vegetarians and force feeds them meatloaf).
Changing the costume is showing disrespect for both the character and the fans.
@Tiny
That makes sense, and by the looks of it, he will have his sense of humor. Im pretty sure Ryan Reynolds will pull it off. He was funny as hell in Waiting and dark in Amityville Horror. IMO as long as he plays the character perfect, they would just need his mask at the end of the movie.
On the back of the package, it says this: “Deadpool was transformed by William Stryker to be the ultimate mutant. He is a monster with a single purpose, to serve Stryker’s will. He is an indestructible weapon with (no vulnerability and his first target is) Wolverine.”
To top this all off, Deadpool will have Lazar eyes…I’m not kidding. Deadpool is becoming the ultimate mutant, by gaining other mutant powers. Lazar eyes will be come from kiddie Cyclops.
@Robert
Hoo boy…
Vic
I know I’m gonna get a lot of crap for this, but that doesn’t sound so bad. Atleast you know he’s in the movie for a reason and with a purpose, instead of just being there to please the fans.
Its of course is possible that the toy is not a correct representation of the actual character. They may have just changed his costume and game him lazer eye’s to appeal to small children. I remember back when i was a kid and i got the Aliens toy set and the weapons the marines came with were not movie accurate, they also made up fake aliens that were never in the franchise.
to those who think externals dont matter ,
How would fans react if they did a Hulk reboot if the Hulk were PURPLE
and the pants were GREEN?
