Fanboy Rant: Has Fox Ruined Deadpool? Is Gambit Next?

deadpool1 Fanboy Rant: Has Fox Ruined Deadpool? Is Gambit Next? After Fox aired its three-part series of 60-second TV spots for X-Men Origins: Wolverine earlier this week, my excitement level got pushed even higher than it already was for this movie. These three trailers, titled “Outcasts,” “Brothers” and “Legends” showed us many scenes from Wolverine’s past as well as a pile of characters and action sequences.

I was so happy to see Gambit tossing around charged up cards and was really growing on the idea of Liev Schreiber as Sabretooth. I had even completely moved on in the idea of separating Fox’s X-Men films from the continuity of the Marvel Comics and cartoons.

That excitement all came crashing down today as Screen Rant writer Carl Lee came upon the following images of the Deadpool action figures from the Hasbro toy line for the movie.

And Giant Killer Squid has a clearer image of the toy above.

What is with the blades coming out of his arms? Are those taped on or are they some Weapon X modification similar to Wolverine’s? How much did they really screw up this character or is there a chance his costume will still be in the film at some point? I can’t really see how going from awesome weapon-covered red and black suit is replaced by topless scarred dude wearing purple pants.

When I saw Deadpool looking like he was scarred in the trailer, I thought that’s probably just one scene in the movie where he wasn’t wearing his trademark costume… Perhaps it was before he even got the costume. In my mind, there was no possible way they could not have his amazing looking costume in this movie. I mean, it’s already there for them in the comics and in thousands of images online. It’s muted, with it’s red and black color scheme so it’s not some outfit that would look outlandish in a live action film.

All they have to do is buy the materials and have the costume designers put it together. Even I could do that with a fraction of the budget they probably get to produce the outfits.

Here’s a screen capture of Deadpool from the trailer and it’s this design they chose to feature as the toy of the character – This likely means that Ryan Reynolds will not be sporting the infamous Deadpool red and black outfit.

So, my question is why? Does this design look better? No. Maybe the toy will sell better than one that actually looks like the character? Nope, that can’t be it either.

This potential colossal failure on the part of those making this film has me very worried for how badly they may ruin my personal favorite, Gambit. We already know they ignored his unique eye color but from the trailers they did add the glowing effect to items that he charges (notably his staff and cards). But, what they’ve not shown us is a single scene of Taylor Kitsch actually talking as Gambit.

My worries are that they may have completely dropped the trademark Cajun accent which to me is absolutely essential for doing this character justice. In The X-Movies, they completely ruined the Colossus character by not making him Russian and they also screwed up Pyro the same way.

Why are they bothering to include these characters if they are intentionally distancing them from what made them so popular in the first place? The reasons fans wanted them in this movie are being shattered and now it’s really starting to bother me.

What do you think of the new Deadpool and do these changes bother you?

  1. Yep another character ruined, unless wolverine is the one who gives him all the scars….

It’s another example of a well realised character getting watered down on the big screen. With all the additional supporting characters it’ll suffer in the same way as X3 or Spiderman3. with little or no screen time there will be little room for them to make their mark, and as such may just be shoehorned in for marketing reasons rather than story.

  2. They are most likely saving the costume for the spin-off.

  3. The only thing I can think of is Wolverine will some how cut out the blades coming out of Deadpool’s arms while giving him the scars.

I think Marvel isn’t giving Deadpool the costume for the same reason that if the Halo movie was going to come out, it wouldnt revolve around the Master Chief. It was explained that its hard to have a main character in a movie if you never see his mouth move or facial expressions, and thats why they probably have face paint on him, or something of that nature. Either way, I’m just not getting my hopes up for this movie.

  4. @Rob

As for the purple pants, if you look at the picture, it looks a little blurred and faded. Deadpool is probably wearing red pants but the picture is just jacked up.

  5. Being a comic book reader for years now (and still), this used to bother me when I realised that it is only one interpretation of the character. Like, for instance the organic webbing for Spider-Man, but, alas, it is only the ‘movie’ version of the character.

Should they stay with the source material, hell yes, but, hey, this was a decision made with the filmmakers and the studio. As long as the original source material (comic) does not adheer to these ‘movie’ changes then, whatever man. I am just glad that my X-Force 98 and Uncanny x-Men 265 will bump up in price when this movie hits!

  6. Is it Deadpool or Baraka from Mortal Kombat!LOL
But hey, it’s Fox Studios, surpise. :)

  7. It could be because they dont want to Overshadow Logan,
who isnt wearing a uniform in this one.
Still, given that this is Fox we are talking about this is a bit worrisome.

  8. Oki, Colossus was russian in the x-men movies… So, hmm..

  9. why are people saying wolverine gives him the scars. thats not how it happened and i really doubt they will deviate that far from canon.

as for the mask, they did it with spiderman…they can do it here…

    and uncanny x-men 265 is worth nothing, i think u mean 266.

but back to the toy…that thing is an abomination … looks like baraka from mortal kombat. its not the first time they have screwed up action figures…wont be the last. i wouldnt worry too much about the baby toys, as long as they dont mess up the collectables. i dont think those blades will be in the movie.

  10. Ok, i can see people getting mad about Deadpool, but you havent seen the movie yet. They can just be saving the costume for later. But being mad about a character not having a certain accent is just STUPID!!! Wouldnt you rather have a good actor play him without the accent, than having a retard play him just so the character can have the accent? How was Pyro ruined??? You really think they ruined Colossus for not having the accent??? He barely even had screen time.

  11. The Incredible Hulk: Hulk didnt have his trademark purple shorts, that didnt make the movie crappy.
Iron Man: Jarvis was a computer, not a butler, that didnt make the movie crappy.
X-Men films: Wolverine didnt wear his yellow spandex, that didnt make the movie crappy.
Spider-Man films: He didnt have his web blasters, that didnt make the movie crappy.
The Dark Knight: Joker wore paint instead of having his face bleached, that didnt make the movie crappy.

The character changes dont make a movie crappy, its the story and acting.

  12. Seriously people are crying about the costume? So they could nail the character spot on with his personality and everything, but dear god to mess up the costume. Come on people get over it.

Just to add two more things. Maybe he just doesn’t have the costume until a distinct action in the film scares him and he decides to cover the scare with a costume. Also having a character always wearing a full on mask takes away from the movie. You can’t see his mouth move.

  13. Just to clarify something from the comics, Deadpool’s severe scarring is from his terminal cancer that Weapon X cures with Wovlerine’s regenerative “healing factor.” It’s just that the scars can’t be removed and the damage can’t be undone, thus his black comedy and unstable mind.

Wolverine’s and Deadpool’s origins never cross paths, the two characters are only linked by the Weapon X program. Who knows why him or Gambit is in this origin at all? If it’s to make the fanboys happy, they’re not doing a very good job.

What the “Merc with a Mouth” is doing, running around half naked with knifes taped to his arm, is out of character.

  14. @Oscar

“But being mad about a character not having a certain accent is just STUPID”

So you’re saying the author of this article is stupid? How about dialing that back a tad, eh?

So if in the Iron Man movie they decide that Natasha Romanova (The Black Widow) shouldn’t have a Russian accent, that would be cool, right?

The choices DON’T have to be:

    A. Crappy actor with the right accent.
    B. Great actor without the right accent.

    How about:

    C. Great actor with the right accent.

  15. As a long time Deadpool fan i am just happy that the character is in a movie and being played by an actor who has a love of the character. Do you think as fan of Deadpool do you think Ryan would have signed on to play the character if was not something that he would want to see. Well I hope anyway.

  16. @ BEN

are you asking if an actor would sell out a character or something they loved to get a role in a film…Hell YES!!

  17. Drew… you said they can’t have a masked character as a lead? forget about spiderman? my theory is that deadpool looks somewhat similar to spiderman, so the makers of this film probably destroyed deadpool for that reason. seriously… i might throw up if i have to see deadpool portrayed as some aladin-esque vampire man… it will probably kill me… these guys ruined one of my most favorite (and most humorously badass) super heros. shame shame…

  18. and p.s. amen Carl Lee… your last remark said it all…

  19. Spider-man had 3 super successful films wearing a mask over his face. His costume is probably the closest to his comics counterpart and coincidentally he has Marvel’s most successful trilogy.

And yes, the accent is everything. The one and ONLY reason Gambit is in this movie are because there is a large fanbase for the Ragin’ Cajun and he’s popular because of trademarks, one big one being his dialect.

Could you imagine a movie based on the Preacher comics with Cassidy not being Irish? It would be horrible.

  20. This is a good article..
I was extremely excited for this film after seeing the 3rd tv spot, particularly Ryan Reynolds’ Wade Wilson. When I saw those toys however my heart sank. Deadpool is an awesome crazy character and Ryan has said he is a huge fan himself. I cannot comprehend how and why the film makers would do this.

Not giving him the exact costume I can live with, but giving him blades in his arms and a stiched mouth is ridiculous.

  21. To me, staying true to the spirit of the character is more important than the costume. Of course I can say that, having been very happy with the Iron Man armor in the movie. :-)

The thing that bothers me is the claw bit – Deadpool doesn’t have claws, does he? Isn’t he just an assassin with healing powers and a quick wit?

  22. sooo… I didn’t even bother reading all the comments so I’m sorry if someone has already corrected you… So Wade Wilson has cancer… which when they give him a healing factor like Logan’s counters it …and gives him scars because his molecular structure is no longer constantly stable… so no… not failure actually quite accurate actually.

As for the blades on his arms… what weapons hasn’t Deadpool had? if it was me I would write a smart ass comment about how Deadpool is trying to one up Wolverine… and fails miserably by taping swords to his arms… and then ends by him getting stabbed in the chest.

  23. @D-E-D-P-O-O-L

That’s actually a pretty good possible explanation.

  24. Spiderman 2099 had organic web shooters. Just to say that technically the idea still came from the comics. As far as the action figure goes, toy lines come up with a lot of concept styles that don’t show up in the movie. Anyone remember the Titanium Man figure? I watched Iron Man closely and I don’t remember seeing him.

  25. 123 on the Baraka call. Pretty much share all the negative sentiments posted here.

Regarding the mask talk, I always found it annoying that Spiderman’s mask would always come off some time during a fight. Heck, even Iron Man had his helmet knocked off in the end.
