From the looks of it, Logan may go down as one of the greatest superhero movies of all time. Like Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight, it blends comic book elements with deep character studies and philosophical quandaries, all packed in an exquisite looking film. The result has given Logan a 95% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and the movie is all set for a massive opening weekend. Part of that is also due to the amazing performances by Hugh Jackman, Patrick Stewart, and Dafne Keen.

For Jackman, he's finally saying goodbye to a role he's played nine times over seventeen years. Similarly, Stewart has been around just as long, turning in six performances as Professor X. He too is done with the role (unless of course he can reprise the character alongside Deadpool). That real world history adds an extra weight to the film, making it the summation of almost two decades of work from a pair of stellar performers. But with Wolverine being such a popular character, many wonder if he'll live on beyond Jackman. The actor has already said he'd be open to the role being recast, and now he's opened up a bit more about that eventuality.

Thanks to CBR, we have a conversation between Jackman and Indian film critic Rajeev Masand about the possible future of Wolverine. When asked how the actor will feel if the role is ever recast, Jackman remained positive.

“I … I think I’ll be fine with it. I hope other people play him."

After all these years, it's not hard to imagine that Jackman is emotionally attached to the character. Still, he recognizes that the Wolverine existed before he came around, and will certainly outlive him. He just hopes the next person to pop their claws in the role doesn't overshadow him too much.

“The comic book series is so good because you had so many people interpreting this role over so many years. I think there’s six origin stories; everyone puts their own stamp on it. This is a great character. I’ll be really interested to see how I feel about it. I want it to be really great, but I don’t want it to be that much better than me. Like, just a little bit better’s fine, but if everyone’s like, ‘Oh, thank God, now –‘ I might find that a little difficult.”

Of course, there's another option besides recasting such an iconic role. In the comics, Laura Kinney, aka X-23, is the current Wolverine. She also just so happens to be the character Dafne Keen plays so powerfully in Logan. Director James Mangold has already said he can't imagine Fox not bringing back the character, so perhaps she could finally don the yellow and blue outfit in a few years.

Similarly, Logan's biological son Daken has taken on his father's mantle, though in a more villainous fashion. Still, as fans are more eager than ever to see R-Rated superhero movies, Daken is one character we'd love to see brought to life on screen. All of this is just speculation at this point, as Logan brings up all sorts of questions about the future of the X-Men film franchise. When those questions finally get answered, we'll be here.
