[This post contains potential MAJOR SPOILERS for Wolverine 3.]
X-Men: Apocalypse brings about the dawn of a new era for Fox’s corner of the Marvel universe. The climactic cinematic event closes the X-Men: First Class saga, while opening the next round for the franchise – one that will see the team get some new allies in The New Mutants. The next phase will also include 2017’s Wolverine 3, bringing Hugh Jackman’s run as Logan to an end.
As with most superhero epics of today, plot details are slim to none on the third Wolverine chapter. However, casting selections and rumors have fanned the speculation as to who Weapon X’s most famous son will battle in his final outing.
A recent report from The Nerdist brings possible new details about Logan’s next foe. Potential spoilers coming up: Their source, who’s supposedly close to the production, claims the Logan will have to fend off Reavers. For those unfamiliar, the Reavers are a team of cybernetically enhanced baddies. Typically, they roam the X-Men world as freelance thieves and assassins, but have been used as a paramilitary task force as well.
No relation to the Guardians of the Galaxy pirates, the partially mechanical mercs initially hailed from Australia. After some Marvel retconning, though, the team was reorganized under the auspices of the delightful Donald Pierce. Pierce was essentially a eugenics-obsessed psychopath who used the cyborg team to attack all mutant kind (and humans friendly to their cause as well). If these rumors of Reavers are true, their presence leaves the Wolverine 3 story open to all kinds of possible adversaries.
It’s now possible that Boyd Holbrook’s casting as a brutal “head of security for a global enterprise” could refer to the Hellfire Club – of which Pierce was a member of. If so, it’s entirely possible Holbrook could play the fascistic Pierce, and his security force is made up of Reavers. Where does that leave mad-scientist Richard E. Grant, then? Assuming the post-credit scene from X-Men: Apocalypse ties into Wolverine 3, the X-world could have another player in the mutant-meddling, nefarious top-secret-organization realm – the Essex Corporation. The presence of Mr. Sinister would lend weight to speculation about X-23 making an appearance in Wolverine 3 as well.
Could the James Mangold-helmed picture really feature an appearance from Mr. Sinister, Reavers, and Pierce, or is that simply too much villainy for one film? Of course, this is Wolverine we’re talking about. With a possible Old Man Wolverine’s last stand still over a year away, there’s lots of time to speculate though.
What do you think of these rumors? Who do you want to see do battle with Logan in Jackman’s last entry?
X-Men: Apocalypse will open in U.S. theaters on May 27th, 2016, followed by Wolverine 3 on March 3rd, 2017 and unannounced X-Men films on October 6th, 2017 (possibly Gambit), January 12th, 2018 (possibly Deadpool 2), and July 13th, 2018. The New Mutants is also in development.
