20th Centry Fox’s piece of the Marvel Universe has hit some high notes lately. With a major box office coup from underdog anti-hero and begrudging X-Men collaborator Deadpool, as well as the hotly anticipated X-Men: Apocalypse arriving in a few months, 2016 looks to be an impressive year for X-fans. The future also looks bright for the final outing of Hugh Jackman’s uneven but overall enjoyable Wolverine trilogy.
Although few facts about the upcoming solo project have been revealed, rumor has it that the story will revolve around an older Wolverine. The studio has also discussed the likelihood – especially after Deadpool’s success – of releasing Woverine 3 with an R-rating. Aside from these few details, though, the cast of characters and villains involved in the picture are still a mystery. However, one of Wolvy’s main antagonists would love another crack at him.
Interviewed at the 2016 Oscars, Liev Shreiber (Spotlight) expressed interest in returning to the series as arch-nemesis Victor Creed — better known as Sabretooth. Discussing the possibility with comrade Hugh Jackman, Shreiber’s wishes to further partake in the series are genuine, if tinged with humor. He tells MTV News:
“We talked about it. I don’t know. He’s mentioned it to me. The Old Man Logan story — that’s appealing. That’s something that I can do. Old, being the operative word.”
All joking aside, the rumors of an older Wolverine story would make Shreiber’s chances of rejoining the cast likely. The Old Man Logan story arc, written by Mark Millar and featuring Steve McNiven’s artwork, delves into a post-apocalyptic world conquered by supervillains, where Wolverine has metaphorically shed his claws. The storyline features a revolving door of old favorite characters, including Hawkeye, Hulk, Red Skull, and Venom – although clearly none of those characters could make the transition between studios.
While Sabretooth never makes an appearance in the Old Man Logan story arc, he does show up in a related sequence from last year’s Secret Wars plotline. Incorporating Sabretooth into Wolverine 3 wouldn’t be particularly difficult. His presence simply makes sense, seeing as the third installment will be Jackman’s swan song, and Schreiber has been reluctant to reprise the role in the past as well, due to its heavy physicality. Giving the two actors and characters a final (if not ultimately final) grudge match would not only bring a sense of closure to the trilogy, but could also make up for Shreiber’s fine portrayal of the feral menace in the otherwise disappointing X-Men Origins: Wolverine.
Unfortunately, though, nothing is set in stone at this point. Despite Schreiber’s interest in the part, the script for Wolverine 3 is likely to remain a tightly guarded secret – with only 20th Century Fox revealing Sabretooth’s involvement or lack thereof. Hopefully, for the sake of both characters’ dynamic history, Victor Creed will return for one last battle.
Deadpool is now in theaters; X-Men: Apocalypse opens on May 27, 2016; Gambit sometime in 2017; Wolverine 3 on March 3, 2017; and an unannounced X-Men film on July 13, 2018. The New Mutants and Deadpool 2 are also in development.
