Marvel Comics Classic Wolverine Costume Yellow Blue James Mangold Talks Wolverine 3 & Classic Yellow Costume

With the help of 3D ticket price premiums, The Wolverine solidified itself as the second most successful X-Men film at the worldwide box office. With Hugh Jackman at the lead and proving he can still sell the iconic, if rage-induced, mutant superhero, there’s much more Wolverine in the pipeline for moviegoers.

Jackman returns as Logan next summer in X-Men: Days of Future Past and after that, he’s not contracted to continue playing onscreen with his claws. With is passion for the character, he is however talking with director James Mangold about ideas for Wolverine 3 and there’s one deleted scene on The Wolverine Blu-ray that we hope plays into the future of the character.

The Wolverine hits Blu-ray December 3rd and one of the deleted scenes that didn’t make the theatrical or (or the Unleashed Extended Edition) features a live-action version of the classic Wolverine costume from Marvel Comics. It was awesome and something we’ve waited many years to see. Speaking with IGN at a screening of the extended, and much more bloody, cut of The Wolverine Mangold explained how the yellow costume came to be and why it’s not in either version of the film.

I made it up on set. Honestly, first of all, I kept hearing and seeing from fans who were just begging to see this wardrobe, and I kept thinking as we were shooting, “How can I do this? How could I ever service this desire for people to see it?” And there was a point where I just asked the prop department to make me a gift box. So when I did that scene on the plane with Yukio, with Rila [Fukushima] and Hugh [Jackman], I had no costume. The studio hadn’t approved of making one or doing anything, but I thought, “Let’s just shoot a couple takes where he opens the box and reacts to it, and I can figure out what to put inside the box later.” There was just a point later in the cutting room where I put it together, and I thought, “It’s kinda sweet.”

Mangold had said previously at the event that the costume didn’t make either cut because it didn’t mesh with X-Men: Days of Future Past where he does not wear it. With the way The Wolverine ends however, with Logan and Yukio off to seemingly begin their own fully-funded heroics, perhaps it could surface in Wolverine 3 for which Mangold is developing and talking to Hugh Jackman about. There’s also of course a screenplay of X-Force by Jeff Wadlow (Kick-Ass 2) in the works and we can expect another X-Men team-up by Bryan Singer, Matthew Vaughn and co. to round out the First Class trilogy after Days of Future Past.

When the still photo of the costume first surfaced online, we explained that while it’s cool, it would need to be put into context to work in Fox’s own Marvel cinematic universe. Why would he wear the costume? Why would Mariko give such a costume to him? If he wears the yellow duds, would characters around him suit up as well?

As for Wolverine 3 (The Wolverine 2?), Mangold explained that any story he’s a part of would again be character-centric and not an over-the-top superhero flick.

Yeah, I think the thing I’d love to make sure we do is that we find a way to not to turn it into a “Will the world survive?” movie — I think that that worked for us here — but also not to make the same picture again. I think the key thing for me, you heard me talking about how I construct scripts, is just figuring out the key relationships and just what it’s about, what theme the whole thing is going to be about. I’ve got a good angle on it, but I’m not ready to talk about it yet!

The Wolverine dealt with Logan’s “curse” of immortality and by the end of the story we saw him changed, physically and emotionally, with a renewed sense of purpose. What would the next Wolverine solo affair deal with and what stories from the comics could/should he draw from? Let us know in the comments!

  1. I think it looks wicked. I’m all for seeing Hugh Jackman in classic Wolverine colors.

  2. Nice way to draw people in to buy the DVD. I also love how Mangold said he did this on his own and that the studio was against it, well played.

    • Payback for studio putting in after-credits scene that he had no part of ;)

Both are wins for the fans though!

      • +1 and that costume, is the best comic-related costume yet imo!

        • Lets just hope Hugh looks ‘good’ in it!

          • That’s what I’m wondering about. I hope it doesn’t make him look silly.

    • They have also managed to get a rise out of people saying how cool the costume is even though it’s just a mask and a pair of gloves in a box.

  3. If they can put Captain America in his costume, they can put Wolverine in his.

    • They had Cap in his original comic costume in “The First Avenger” when he just promoting war bonds. When he’s in action in that film, however, the classical vibe is still there and it looks more realistic and bad-ass if I do say so myself.

      • Exactly. This would bring the classical vibe to wolverine

  4. I always imagined it would look foolish but I was wrong. Pretty slick.

  5. I think they should dump all the “black leather” looks. I think at this point the audience gets that this is a comic book movie. Lets see all the characters in there iconic garb!

  6. I like to see him in the classic costume even if it’s just briefly or for a particular scene in the next film. Check out the super hero beat down series on you tube where wolverine is wearing the classic yellow costume in his battle with the predator. It looks pretty good in live action.

Speaking of that, being that fox owns both the x-men and predator franchises, why not consider an actual wolverine vs predator movie? If done right it could be epic.

    • I have seen that, a while ago, and I use that as well as an example to show why it’s cool.

That and the X-Men Origins: Wolverine game which is not only better than the film in every possible way, but it features (digital) Hugh Jackman wearing a bunch of costumes from the books (orange and brown, yellow and blue, X-Force grey and black).

      • I think suiting Logan up in the X-force grey and black would’ve still fit into the Days of Future Past/X-force continuity and we would’ve gotten to see him in a wolverine costume (finally). If the suit was given some kind of function or significant meaning (kinda like MOS), it would work. The biggest problem with trying to justify a specific suit for this character is you can’t pawn it off as being ‘armor’, however, with his recent diminishment of powers, perhaps that’s the opportunity they need.

      • I just searched for, and then watched, the Predator/Wolverine video. Awesome.

        Thanks for that :)

  7. wolverine vs predator would definitely be cool.

    • theres a fan-made one on youtube. its not too bad you should check it out.

  8. WOW. That pic with the suit and katanas and everything else looks so freaking cool.
Im gonna post it on my facebook :)

  9. Don’t care if it’s in a movie or not, I just want to see Hugh wearing the suit.

  10. So, why are the claws different lengths between the bone claws and the adamantium claws? The middle claw is longer in the bone claws, but they are even on the adamantium??

  11. It looks like the mask is more of a helmet, which is fine. I think it would be cool if the eyeholes had some type of lenses in them so it could enhance his eyesight (kind of like in The Dark Knight) and the lenses would be white to match the comic book. Just a thought I had.

  12. Still want to see him suit up in that costume. come on mayne!

  13. Since the mast has a large dark element running from nose to over the ear on each side it would be cool if they explained it as tech that greatly enhances his sense of smell and hearing.

Especially when the sound or smell is behind him.

    • Since the mask…

  14. you guys just want to see Hugh Jackman in a 1 piece yellow unitard doing aerobics…admit it

  15. Wolverine has to be in that suit before i kick the bucket

    • ^^^^^^^^quite an odd bucket list item. I’ve been a Wolverine fanatic since age 10 and I kinda wanna see this happen.

      • I don’t quite remember my age but once my older brother explained to me who Wolverine was and what his powers were, Superman and Batman took a backseat.

  16. Best of both worlds……Wolverine in his yellows (and looking cool as F) + he’s fighting Preds! Enjoy! :)

  17. Wolverine/Havok Meltdown

  18. Yeah, its about time he donned the yellow suit. It is Wolverine after all!

  19. Put it on put it onnn!

If Mariko gives it to him, it could be that they’re using him as a symbol now. And as I’ve mentioned before, they can use it as a way for him to cope with being human and being a beserker Wolverine; it helps him separate the identities.

It works in real life psychology too – people feel more powerful when they put on masks and cover their identities.

  20. I guess I never thought it was a big deal that Wolverine hasn’t worn his comic costume in the movies because Hugh Jackman ALREADY looks like wolverine (plus Wolverine was never really a character in the comics that had to be identified by his costume). That all being said, I still think this suit looks pretty sweet. I’m just not sure how good it will look on Jackman, we still don’t know how cool it will work in action on screen.

  21. The suit could be explained as having inspiration from samurai armour, the whole ‘intended to strike fear in your enemies’ purpose. Though I’d settle for any excuse to see him wear it

    • +1

  22. I need to see Jackman in his epic classic suit. He needs to do it once, even if it’s for a couple seconds. It would please the crowd. Also the next Wolverine movie could circle around his son, Dekon. The guy w/ the mohawk and tattoos. He’s amazing and it would be cool to see in a Wolverine movie like this

  23. An excuse to suit up? How about he’s a member of the X-men! (Didn’t they address this in X-men 1?)

    • The first time I saw X-Men, and wow, we’re going back 13 years, I kept telling everyone he’s a young Clint and they were like “what are you talking about?”

      HE IS

      • I KNOW RIGHT ITS AMAZING!

  24. I feel like we have never really seen a true X-MEN movie to date. I really am sick of the whole current X-men film universe. When they came out with first class I had hoped it would be a true reboot and not just a prequel. This guy is all, “oh i put that alternative ending it for the fans. Too bad you didnt make an entire movie for the fans. WTF.

  25. Does this mean Hugh Jackman can finally get a haircut? Cool beans!

  26. What a cool costume really hoping we get to see Jackman put it on in the next one

  27. If the new movie was based on Old Man Logan, I’m guessing it would be great!!! Also, I was just thinking how cool it would have been if Tarantino had Directed Origins and the Cohen brothers took over The Wolverine.

  28. They should just do a College Humour video or something funny where Hugh Jackman, Andrew Garfield and then some of the Avengers cast (Hemsworth, Evans, etc) are all walking around at comic-con and see each other. Then they can start ripping on each other (as themselves, not in character) about each others franchises then give Jackman crap for not having a costume. Then it could cut to him coming back in that and telling them all to go f**k themselves or something.

    Something funny like that.

    • YES PLEASE

      • Haha that’s the only way around getting them all on screen together I reckon :P
