Hello Marvel movie fans! Today we have new bits to offer about two upcoming superhero films. Fox’s newest installment in X-Men movie franchise, The Wolverine, now has an official synopsis – and it (in no uncertain terms) hints a truly epic movie experience.

We also have word on the shortlist of actors that Sony is eyeing to star in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, as Peter Parker’s friend (turned enemy) Harry Osborn, a role made famous by James Franco in the original Spider-Man movie trilogy.

The Wolverine: Official Synopsis

Fox has been doing a good deal of PR as of late, trying hard to establish The Wolverine as a standalone film experience. Director James Mangold (3:10 to Yuma) and star Hugh Jackman recently did an online Q&A session, where it was firmly established that the film is NOT “Wolverine 2″ by any means; it does take place after X-Men 3 and will be a sort of new starting point for the character; and the story will go deeper and the action will be more grounded (but fiercer) than any other depiction of the character, to date.

As you can see for yourself below, the official synopsis for The Wolverine certainly seems to echo those assertions:

Based on the celebrated comic book arc, this epic action-adventure takes Wolverine, the most iconic character of the X-Men universe, to modern day Japan. Out of his depth in an unknown world he faces his ultimate nemesis in a life-or-death battle that will leave him forever changed. Vulnerable for the first time and pushed to his physical and emotional limits, he confronts not only lethal samurai steel but also his inner struggle against his own immortality, emerging more powerful than we have ever seen him before.

A few gems in the synopsis would be the reference to Silver Samurai, the film’s big mutant antagonist, and clues to the oft-mentioned thematic arc of the film, which finds Wolverine having to deal with his own immortality after having watched so many friends and loved ones (like those in X3) die. The only lingering question I personally have is whether or not that last part, about the “new Wolverine” we’ll get by the end of the film, will have any bearing on the events of Bryan Singer’s X-Men: Days of Future Past. With Fox now building their own Marvel Movie Universe, it’s certainly possible.

The Wolverine will be in theaters on July 26, 2013

  1. So excited for both of these films. I think surely there will be a post credits scene in The Wolverine leading into Days of Future Past.

  2. Excited for both movies.

  3. Stoked for both of them! Dane DeHaan is the only one I recognize off the shortlist and I think he would make a good Harry. He can be fun and likable, and then turn around and be dark and evil. Good choice IMO.

  4. Oh God, Dane DeHaan would be PERFECT.

I really hope he gets the role!

  5. The only guy i know is the guy from chronicle, and i liked him in that so i hope he gets the role over the other two.

  6. Dane DeHaan!

  7. If you’ve seen Martha Marcy May Marlene, the middle guy, Brady, is the one who finds Olsen’s character in the diner.

  8. Of the three listed, I’m rooting for Brady. Not a great fan of Dane—at least not his Andrew character—and I have yet to see Alden in anything (though, anticipating Beautiful Creatures). I’d still like see other contenders.

  9. Aaron Paul for Harry Osbourne.

  10. I hope Electro is in the next Spiderman movie. He is at the top of my “villain want list”, which also includes Mysterio, Scorpion, and maybe Morbius as Spiderman foes. The Osborn cadidates look like they could be beat out by a “Howdy-Doody” puppet. Hope they look a little further.

    • Apparently Electro is going to be the villain Jamie Foxx is rumoured to be up for the part??

  11. Personally I think it would be hilarious if they casted Dave Franco as Harry…

    • Yeah that would be laugh out loud funny, Dave Franco is actually my first pick for Harry i think he’d be perfect

  12. Speaking of Norman Osborn, is it just me or is the voice in the shadows of the jail cell sound a bit like William Dafoe, who played Norman Osborn in the first film? I have replayed that seen over and over on the DVD…
    Just saying.

    • Though he does sound like Mr. Dafoe, the “man in the shadows” was actor Michael Massee. He’s portrayed Ira Gaines on ’24′ and Funboy in the Brandon Lee film, ‘The Crow’ — as well as many other memorable characters.

  13. Dylan O’brien from Teen Wolf would be amazing.

    • I second this.

    • I’d be cool with that

  14. I liked everybody except that crap actor Alden Ehrenreich.

  15. I haven’t seen chronicle yet but I hear it’s fantastic and DeHann seems to be building a pretty big career, he isn’t my first pic personally and ironically I say Dave Franco and he’s still my first choice Alden would probably be p there to.

    • Chornicle = really good, but depressing

    • Chronicle = really good, but depressing

  16. Dane DeHaan!

  17. Definetly Deehan for sure i can totally see that. but i am excited for both films. Amazing spiderman more so just cuz i love the character so much more and was a huge fan of the first one im excited to see how they potray the osborns in these films as well as the death of gwena nd the introduction of mary jane who shpuld be played be lyndsy fonseca not woodley but i should give her more of a chance the cast was spot on in the first one.

  18. cant wait for wolverine

  19. they should cast James Franco’s brother as Harry!

  20. Deehan is Perfect for the role.

  21. Wolverine sounds epic!! Can’t wait

  22. if the want this film to work it has to really try and distance itself from Sam Raimi’s Trilogy. i felt that they didnt accomplish this in the first one felt very much like the others

  23. OOH Dane DeHaan, eh? I didn’t like “Chronicle”, but I loved him IN Chronicle. Really good pick for Harry IMO

  24. Actually, all I want to know is who will be playing the new J. Jonah Jameson. Precisely, I want to here that it is again JK Simmons :)

  25. Vulnerable for the first time and pushed to his physical and emotional limits,

    ^
does that mean…Wolverine’s metal being pulled out? Gosh, i hope it happens sometime soon, my fav story is bone wolverine

  26. Dane for Osborn, his character in Chronicle was extremely well acted and true to life.

As for “a new Wolverine”…..you asked if that meant Wolverine could be affected leading into Days Of Future Past?

My first thought was “possible Old Man Logan adaption?”

  27. Jamie Foxx as Electro sounds interesting. As for the Wolverine flick, I have my normal low expectations for a Fox studio Xmen production. For the hundredth time, Hugh Jackman has played Wolverine in FIVE movies, so a sixth movie is not a “stand alone” movie. And is it not contradictory that Fox wants this movie to stand separately from the previous ones, yet everyones talking about how XDOFP is going to “fix” the Xmen franchise? Finally, Wolverine doesn’t need to be made more powerful. He needs to be portrayed as more savage, cuz Hugh has yet to nail down that part of Wolverines character.

  28. I’d love to see Jamie Foxx as Electro he’s a fantastic actor

  29. Of the “shortlist” of actors for Harry…I don’t think any of the three will get it, but if I had to pick, it would be Ehrenreich. I see a lot of folks saying DeHann and I can’t stop laughing my socks off. Sure, Dehann’s a good actor…

He’s such a good actor that… hey, let’s cast him in role that is nearly a repeat of what he did in Chronicle! That’ll challenge him!
