THR reports that Sony and the filmmakers behind Amazing Spider-Man 2 have set their sights on three potential actors to play Harry Osborn. It’s reported that the role is changing from athletic likable guy to ‘dark and edgy’ guy – and as such, the potential actors for the role all fit that mold.
Dane DeHaan (Chronicle, Lincoln), Brady Corbet (Funny Games, Melancholia) and Alden Ehrenreich (Beautiful Creatures, Stoker) are the three actors on the shortlist. Of the three, I’m most familiar with DeHaan and I’m fairly sure he would be most fans’ pick for the role. The young actor definitely made Chronicle into something special: his slow-burn transformation from victimized teen into super-powered maniac was a breakout role, for sure. He quickly thereafter managed to impress in completely different fashion, playing a slow-witted but lovable sidekick to Shia LaBeouf’s character in Lawless. DeHaan also has a memorable cameo in the opening moments of Steven Spielberg’s Lincoln (as a dim-witted but dedicated Union solider) – and if he’s already running alongside heavyweights like Steven Spielberg and Daniel Day-Lewis, he’s clearly ready for this kind of blockbuster role.
That’s not to say Corbet or Ehrenreich aren’t worthy as well: Corbet has been playing young men with dark sides in everything from the 24 television series to starring as one of the young sociopaths who terrorizes a yuppie family in the psychological horror flick, Funny Games. He’s definitely the sort of guy you could imagine wanting to murder Peter Parker while smiling in his face and patting him on the back.
Ehrenreich is more of an unknown quantity, but he has a starring role in a potential blockbuster young adult franchise (Beautiful Creatures), and his inclusion in the twisted Stoker suggests good things. (Not to mention, he’s got a kind of young Benecio Del Toro thing going on, which could work for Harry Osborn.)
Amazing Spider-Man 2 will continue to explore the nature of Spider-Man’s family history and that history’s ties to his superhero origin. There is the question of whether Spidey will be getting a new costume, but we know Peter Parker will have girl trouble in the form of a new love interest (Mary Jane Watson). On the villain side, we’re all waiting to see if Sony will indeed cast Jamie Foxx as Electro, but there is still the mysterious threat of Norman Osborn (Harry’s father) waiting in the wings.
The Amazing Spider-Man 2 will be in theaters on May 2, 2014.
