With a large amount of comic book movies coming next year as big budget summer releases, we still don’t know officially yet if Fox Studios will be joining in the fun with their X-Men franchise. Of all the studios, they seem to have the most films of the genre in development, possibly even more than Marvel Studios.

The short of it is that 2011 is overbooked and studios are already beginning to pick and choose the key release dates in 2012 with Star Trek officially making the move this morning and now according to Hugh Jackman, his Wolverine-goes-to-Japan story won’t likely film till 2011 for a 2012 release as well.

In a red carpet interview Hugh Jackman was asked about Wolverine 2 to which he jokingly replied he’s done with action movies before saying it’ll likely start filming in 12-18 months since he’ll be busy working on Real Steel. What about the other X-Men movies we know are coming: Deadpool and X-Men: First Class?

Deadpool

For X-Men Origins: Deadpool (no official title yet) we know it heavily depends on star Ryan Reynolds and his filming schedule and in ten weeks he begins work on Green Lantern which was just greenlit with his co-star Blake Lively signed to play the leading lady.

There is a post-summer time-frame to film Deadpool if all things come together nicely and it’s definitely possible with Zombieland writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick being confirmed as the writing duo for the project earlier this week.

If it does film late this summer or in the fall, we could see Deadpool on screens in 2011.

X-Men: First Class

Bryan Singer was brought back the franchise to hopefully right the wrongs of X-Men 3 by telling another X-Men story based before the trilogy. The film is already starting in broken continuity compared to the comics so Singer has an uphill battle to please the hardcore fans with his character choices for who will represent the original X-Men in the film universe.

I’m excited to see Singer back and to see some of his unused ideas put to work. It could be a while before we see this happen though as even though Singer and new writer Jamie Moss signed for the project, Singer has several other projects on the go in Excalibur, Battlestar Galactica and Jack the Giant Killer.

All of these projects including First Class are in pre-production so things could shift around we could get the young X-Men sooner than later.

Wolverine 2

Despite my disappointment with X-Men Origins: Wolverine and the mishandling of key characters (again) in that movie, I still hold hope for the sequel telling a great story for Logan’s adventures in Japan.

Hugh Jackman will be near mid-forties so he’ll be putting his body through another intense workout to get into mutant fighting shape.

  1. Not sure if I’m looking forward to this or not. At least the story sounds half decent.

  2. The very first thing I’d do, if I were doing an X-Men film, is ask Marvel for a couple of regular comic writers and pay them a lot of money to use their inside knowledge of the franchise to write a very good story.

God knows there’s a few stories in the past forty years that would work well on screen.

  3. I’m looking forward to “First Class” the most, because Singer has shown that he knows what he is doing when it comes to comic book movies.

I’m not looking forward to Wolverine 2 AT ALL. The first film was soo bad that I was laughing at the movie.

  4. ya im actuly getting kinda tired of comicbook movies so many coming out its crazy kinda over doing it if u ask me. But I will still c every one of them on opening day of course. Out of the 2 I gotta go with first class simply bc its not made by fox or is it?

  5. That hunk of sh*t made enough money to warrant a sequel?

I wouldn’t mide seeing a Liev Schrieber Sabertooth movie. No Wolverine all about Sabertooth

  6. I am looking forward to Wolverine. I don´t care much about the others. With an Oscar writer working on the script and the right director, it could be great.

  7. I think Deadpool would do well with a Halloween release date. It’s time to start getting comic book movies released throughout the year not just summer.

  8. AT M-Cat

I agree. However, i think the production studios don’t care too much for cntent or quality of these types of films, but merily rely on the appeal of them being on the big screen, because of their huge fan base. It’s basically kicking the fans in the teeth. Its like they (the film studios)”why spend excessive amounts of money to make a good quality movie when we know you fans will run to see it, despite our intended poor efforts to make it excellent?”

  9. I love Jackman as Wolverine, and I actually enjoyed the last film. I will be seeing this as soon as it’s released, and I would love for FOX to make another X-Men movie as well.

I like Hammie’s idea of releasing Deadpool on Halloween. I think that would be a good pairing.

  10. I’m most looking forward to Deadpool followed by Wolverine 2. I honestly have no interest in Xmen first class. My fave xman is Wolverine and I don’t really like the rest of them. Professor X Beast and Jean are ok, but I don’t much care for Cyclops can’t stand Iceman and I hate very few characters in all of comics as much as I hate storm.

  11. I most definitely am NOT looking forward to a W-2 film! Are they serious?! Enough focus on the Wolverine already! We know his story – lets move onto some of the other X-men. There are just too many other great characters to be focusing solely on the Wolverine! Man – I so hope this plan gets canned!

  12. Wolverine is pretty much the only Xman with an interesting back story. Most of the X people are dull and really only merit one movie if that.

  13. No interest at all on First Class. Who really cares about how Cyclops learnt to control his powers? With no Wolvie it’ll be boring. Dull. If you ask me, they should forget this one and hire Singer for Wolverine 2. Jackman will always nail the part and I’m sure the sequel will make money at the B.O. I don’t understand how everyone complains about Wolverine and then runs at those People’s Choice and Teen Choice Awards sites, votes and eventually hands Jackman trophies for Best Action Star for his work!! Doesn’t make sense! Anyway, I too didn’t like Origins, they completely messed up with the character and the CGI were awful but I still reserve some hope for the Japan sequel. So yes, I’ll be there the day it comes out in theaters.

  14. I think X-Men: First Class will be more important than many think for the overall franchise.

The topic of Cable has been brought up in recent X-Men meetings and I think he could be introduced in the First Class film(s) and used in New Mutants (another movie in early planning along with X-Men 4)

It’ll also be nice to see Bryan Singer’s storytelling back in a movie that won’t rely on Wolverine as the poster boy.

  15. Wolverine killing The Dark Pheonix was what finally did it for me with Wolverine. They freakin immortalized him. What next, he’s gonna single handedly defeat Apocalypse. Common Son!!! Ok I had to deal with a tall Wolverine.Ok. But Wolverine taller and bigger than Sabertooth?! WTF!! Sabertooth has to be seriously way more threatining than Wolverine in order for it too seem like a harder challenge for Wolverine. Don’t get me wrong Liev did ok but they’re going to have to make him taller and bigger and feral next time around. Lastly Singer needs to start form scratch with X-Men FC with the actual first class. with the right writing it can be done.

  16. Cable story line would be cool. But not for first class. Wolverine is deffinately the only character worth their own movie but they screwed up his origin story so bad it kinda sucks. Theynshould reboot it. With jackman he’s cool.

  17. stephen lang as cable….

  18. I’m really interested in Deadpool right now. He’s a great character and so far I’m liking what they’re saying about it.

  19. Whens the workprint getting leaked?

    Any news?

    :-)

  20. I really don’t want to see another X-MEN movie from FOX Studios, they are terrible at these movies and never stay true to the source material that is the comic book. I hope all these movies do terribly at the box office to the point that they’ll be glad to hand the reigns over to Marvel/Disney so that they can finally make these movies right!

  21. Don’t worry about getting a good movie if disney gets ahold of x-men just expect mass marketing ploys within in the movies.

  22. Not to mention the action and violence of the comics to be tuned down to a pg rating so they can maximize their profits.

  23. Yeah, just what we need, another Fox disaster attempting to milk the market as much as they can. These movies may look good on the outside but there is no substance to them at all. LOL

Fox absolutely sucks at adapting MARVEL characters for the silver screen.

They have no regard for the actual continuity developed by MARVEL and no respect for the original source material.

Furthermore, “First Class” is going to be CRAP because Bryan Singer chooses to ignore the original source material, has contempt for the fans and loves introducing his own ill conceived views. I really don't need to reserve any judgement because his track record speaks for itself.

Personally I don't beleive he's that great a story teller and he's an even less than average director. BTW…..I don't hate the guy. I just think he should stay as far away from super hero movies as possible.

  24. As much as I love Hugh Jackman as Wolverine, he is I feel becoming an over-exposed and over-rated character.

When MARVEL get the film rights back, Cyclops should kick his ass all the way back to Canada :-)

  25. Singer knows how to put a movie together BUT he knows nothing about the characters he is priveliged to work with. It's like watching a counterfeit representation of the comic books. LOL

  29. Frankly, I'm not too interested in a Deadpool movie, and for some reason i just think it's going to stink. I am not too thrilled about singer being on helm for this next X-movie, either; and do hope what hugh jackman said, about being done making action films, is true, (at least with Wolverine). Despite him seemily joking, there may be some truth to his remark. Why would he even make a “joke” like that, to a question having to be about a future project if Jackman himself was not worried about being type-casted or forever identified to a particular character, despite many of his other films (that character being Wolverine). If his age is the reason, either way, i hope he is done playing Wolverine. I never did like him playing the part.
