Superhero Hype! had a chance to talk to director Gavin Hood, who starts production on Wolverine in November for a planned 2008 release. Hugh Jackman reprises the starring role (and is also a producer). Hood’s latest film, Rendition, opens soon and SHH! was able to get in a few key questions during an interview about his newest flick.
One big question they asked regarding Wolverine was whether the film is going to be shot in Japan. “No, sadly no. We’re not going to Japan”, said Hood. The question is relevant because Wolverine’s ongoing series debuted with his berserker rage in Asia, and is regarded by many as one of the best stories to feature a solo Wolverine.
Hood had more to say about why he, a South African director who recently won an Academy Award for his landmark film Tsotsi, would want to go mano-a-mano with Wolverine.

Hood says he was attracted to the prequel because of Logan’s “existential angst,” and “self-loathing.” He talks about the character’s internal struggles as well as his philosophical side. While I hope we get the “thinking man’s” Wolverine next year, when I re-read Hood’s comments, especially his references to Greek mythology (”[they] were designed to examine emotional truths”), I couldn’t help but think of Ang Lee’s Hulk film, which got philosophical a few too many times.
I hope we get a combination of plenty of action, thrills and thought-provoking drama to keep this film in the quality comic book/action genre.
So, I’m looking forward to seeing Hood’s interpretation of Wolverine in theatres next year, along with other Marvel Comics adaptations Iron Man, Thor and The Incredible Hulk!

LOL, funny, was just ranting about this movie on the Galactus topic. Sounds like the director has a good grasp of how to approach Wolverine’s world, just hope the films gritty along the lines of 300 or Blade, NOT another Van Helsing or Ghostrider.

Just read the main details on Incredible Hulk’s story and it sounds very good, easily better than the Ang Lee film! 2008 going to be a great year for comic films!
You got that right Adrian. I hope that the wolverine movie will be like the blade movies (I hope they make it rated R too) you know serious dark as in the personality of the character and the world around him.I’m also weating for MR:SINISTER and APOCALYPSE to be in a movie, any movie (as I am weating for DARKSEID too be in the JLA movie, I mean I heared roomers).
Hopefully the director is well aware of the problems Ang Lee’s Hulk and will not repeat the same mistakes with Wolverine. Really looking forward to this and the other “comic book” movies coming out next year!
This movie will be awsome im sure. My only question is were is gambit going to fit in? I guess only time shall tell.
