Winona Ryder Joins ‘The Iceman’

Winona Ryder has been added to the cast of The Iceman, one of two dueling projects based on the life of fabled Mafia hitman Richard “The Iceman” Kuklinski.  Ryder will be playing Kuklinski’s wife, who along with their daughters, had no idea that her husband, a loving family man, was leading a double life as a cold-blooded murderer for the mob. She is reportedly replacing actress Maggie Gyllenhaal in the role.

Ryder joins a cast that already includes Chris Evans (The Avengers) and Michael Shannon (Man of Steel, Boardwalk Empire).

The Iceman is based on Anthony Bruno’s best-selling book The Iceman: The True Story of a Cold-Blooded Killer. Chris Evans will play Robert Pronge, Kuklinski’s mentor in murder, while Shannon will play Kuklinski.  The Iceman is slated to come out next year.

This news puts The Iceman deeper into development than its rival film on the same subject, entitled The Ice Man, an adaptation of Phillip Carlo’s acclaimed book, that is set to star Mickey Rourke as Kuklinski. David McKenna (Blow, American History X) has been hired to pen that script, but no director has been announced, nor has a release date been set.

Both films, with their talented casts, seem like they should be very entertaining – and anyone who has seen the HBO documentary “The Iceman Tapes: Conversations with a Killer” knows that the subject matter is ripe for drama. Kuklinski is believed to have killed upwards of 100 people and is not eligible for parole for 111 years. He used a variety of methods to dispatch his victims, including handguns, shotguns, baseball bats, tire irons, knives, ice picks, and his bare hands.  He was nicknamed “The Ice Man” by the New Jersey Police after it was discovered that the body of one of his victims had been stashed for two years in an ice-cream truck owned by a friend of the killer’s known as “Mr. Softee” (the role Evans will play).

Michael Shannon will play ‘The Iceman’

Michael Shannon is a powerful actor on Boardwalk Empire and he surely can deliver a chilling performance as one of the creepiest and most feared mob assassins ever captured. For Ryder’s part, well, it’s good to see her back in some dramatic fare that better than last year’s comedy miss, The Dilemma.

The Iceman is in production and slated for a 2013 release.

  1. I know you’re not necessarily supposed to be an expert on the subject matter, but this short post contains two glaring errors:

    1. Kuklinski was not a ‘loving family man.’ He was indeed a devoted family man, but he expressed his ‘devotion’ by being a brutal and persistent wife beater.

    2. Kuklinski is dead. He died in prison, so any mention of parole is moot.

  2. …and the cast members clutched their valuables.

    • LOL that took me a minute to get it.

      /Bravo

  3. Saw The Ice Man Tapes on HBO when it aired. Very Disturbing. If they get it right this could be very good. That is if the’re willing to show exactly how he killed his victims but you would be looking at an NC-17 rating for sure.

  4. Should have green lit Rourkes versionit sounded more interesting think mickey would have played him better .

  5. It does not suprise me that she would jump at the opportunity to star in a violent film that involves the killing of other people. She is an absolute psychopath and has done some really horrific things to people. She is definately not this little goody – goody that she likes to portray off screen. She stalked me by proxy for a little over five years and it is only a matter of time before one of her friends rats her out. I will make sure that she goes strait to prison were she belongs and is kept there were she can never hurt anyone ever again.

    • Okay……

  6. I for one would like to see this when it comes out. The guy was a true sociopath, with no feelings what so ever for his victims or those around him.

  7. I grew up with Richard Kuklinski’s son Dwayne who dated my best friend at the time for years. We always asked him what his dad did for a living when they would suddenly revamp their house with all new furniture, etc and no one knew the answer. His son would pull out brown bags of cash from hidden walls and hid a gun nearby. I was in his house a few times and would see his family who was indeed, from the outside, a normal loving family. Mr. K provided for his family well but there was a dark side of course. When we graduated HS that year, we were shocked to hear about the arrest and what was to be discovered about his secret life.

I hope this movie captures the true people who lived this nightmare. I hope the actors speak to the family to get a real sense of what life was like back in Dumont, NJ during the 80′s and how this scarred them for life.

    • really, i pulled a gun and bags of cash? lmao

      • Hey, are you really him? What happend to you in the movie? Just saw it. Had to look up that guy, richard kuklinski. Scary stuff…. :-/

  8. Well good for her. There was a time when I greatly admired her, but I don’t now. I remember watching her movies when I was a kid, but was not attracted to her in the slightest. I thought she was a boy when I first seen her in the film Lucas. I was sixteen back then. I didn’t know anything about her and would have walked by her on the street without giving a second glance. Life sure is strange, and it sure is a “crazy world” especially when someone who you once admired so much, lets you down at every opportunity. I recall reading a quote from her saying one thing she hates about being a “famous” actress is that of people touching her and thinking of her as public property. Gee, that must be terrible and awfully scary. I myself have gone through a similar experience for about 5 years, that involved a cruel, spoiled little brat who thought that I too, was public property and decided to criminally harass me to her hearts content. What is really surprising is that this girl has no shame or concept of guilt because “She didn’t feel guilty about what she did and if she had of physically harmed someone… it would have been a different experience.” I don’t like Winona Ryder, and I don’t trust her. It is that gut feeling of mine. I have never had a crush on her and never really thought of her in that way, accept for her being an actress. I once thought her very talented, until I watched her having sex with a puppet on uTUBE. Then, there where the comments that I have read over the years and the time that she was supposed to have committed suicide on March 8, 2007. My college professor knows her parents, and I myself, have met her Mother twice. I always wanted to ask him what Winona is really like as a person? However, now it sends a shiver through my entire body to even contemplate asking him such a horendeous question. I suppose, like all of us, we must be left with only knowing Winona “the famous actress” and not the real individual. I myself was neive to think that someday perhaps our paths would cross, and I would of had the opportunity, over a cup of tea, to get to know the “real” her. However, I know that this was never going to happen and as my friends said: it was only foolish, wishful thinking. I suppose I was curious, because I knew absolutely nothing about her, just her name and that she acted for a living. Life sure is strange, I remember my Mother telling me that Winona wouldn’t give me the time of day and that we are worlds apart. What is it about Mothers and why are they always right? Oh well such is life and karma said that it all wasn’t meant to be. I will just have to fall in love and give everything to just an ordinary girl. And forget about silly dreams and wishfull thinking. However, I do think that it is great that everything is going so very well for Winona, and I wish her all the best with her new film.

    • WTF is this bull crap all about??? lol. Very strange person.

  9. Should have used mickey rourke instead he would have been much better

    • Kuklinski was 6 foot 5 inches tall & 320 lbs, while Mickey Rourke is 5 ft 7 inches tall. That is why they dropped Mickey. James Galdofini was the first choice, but he declined.
