USA’s Psych has always played the geek angle pretty hard, but Shawn and Gus have outdone themselves this time. Everyone’s favorite octogenarian William Shatner will be playing love interest Juliet’s father in an upcoming Season 6 episode.

The news comes months ahead of Psych‘s unspecified fall return. While it’s not known which of the sixteen new episodes will feature Shatner, he may appear in multiple episodes, given the character’s familial ties to Detective Juliet ‘Jules’ O’Hara (Maggie Lawson). Juliet and Shawn began dating in Season 5, so expect things to get even more close (and dangerous) now that Daddy’s in the picture.

However, like a lot of Psych regulars, Juliet’s father Frank is far from squeaky clean. He’s been estranged from his daughter for an unknown period, presumably following her discovery of his activities as a con man. He’ll enlist the aid of Shawn and Gus to get back into her life, but the promise of a last big score may bring the scheme tumbling down.

Shatner is coming off a single season as another patriarch, the titular father in CBS’ S#*! My Dad Says; the sitcom was cancelled despite solid ratings. Shatner’s been something of a comedy Renaissance man for the last several decades, appearing in arcs on shows like 3rd Rock From the Sun and The Practice before landing a regular role on Boston Legal. His film roles, like the pair of Miss Congeniality movies and the voice of a possum in Over The Hedge, tend to take advantage of the overly dramatic style the actor has played off of since his Star Trek days.

Shatner shouldn’t have any trouble relating to stars James Roday and Dulé Hill.

Psych itself is no stranger to high-profile guest stars: last season featured dozens of actors and actresses, including Peter Weller, Ally Sheedy, Franka Potente, Cary Elwes (in a fan-favorite recurring role) and the entire cast of Twin Peaks. In the premiere episode this fall, Malcolm McDowell (who appeared beside Shatner in his very last appearance as Kirk in Star Trek: Generations) will play a British diplomat. Other confirmed Season 6 guest stars include Danny Glover, Molly Ringwald and Michael Trucco.

  1. Crider….the ENTIRE cast of Twin peaks??? hmmmm…..I call BS to that statement….:)

    • No, not the entire cast but a good chunk of them:

“When it came time to invite “Twin Peak” actors to “Psych,” Roday said he opted not to pursue Kyle MacLachlan, who starred in “Peaks” as FBI Agent Dale Cooper.

“He was such an iconic part of such an iconic series that we decided not to go for Kyle, not because we don’t love him but just because we thought it might be more interesting to feature some of the other actors from the cast,” he said.

They also chose not to approach Lara Flynn Boyle, who played Donna Hayward in the TV series but was replaced by Moira Kelly in the movie “Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me.” “There was a lot of speculation back in the day that maybe she wasn’t as connected to the series as some of the actors were.”

Roday said producers did approach two other “Twin Peaks” actors — Michael Ontkean, who played Sheriff Truman, and Madchen Amick, who played diner waitress Shelly Johnson — but for various reasons weren’t able to get them in the episode.”

Those that were in the episode:

    • Anthony as far as I know it was the entire cast. Granted I never liked Twin Peaks, but they did advertise it as the entire cast.

      • Daniel, it wasn’t the entire cast, the KEY player in the series..Agent Cooper wasnt in the episode at all, nor was Truman.

        • Yea my mistake. Like I said I wasn’t a fan of Twin Peaks so couldn’t remember half the cast. I only watched about one season didn’t like it and forgot about it.

I just went off the advertisement. I did love that episode of Psyche though it was pretty funny.

      • I know that they advertised the entire cast was in it, but really that was false advertising on their part.

  2. He really doesn’t look 80. He’s got to be one of the more robust octogenarians I’ve ever seen.

He’s probably going to live until 100 and out-live Nimoy by around ten years. So much for Vulcans being long-lived.

  3. Man I love this show. I can’t get enough of Psyche. It’s such a hilarious show.

    • Yes it is Daniel, it’s my favorite show right now, I am actually glad that it doens’t get full seasons run, too much of a good thing can get stale after all.

      • There are a lot of great shows that I wish had more episodes anf uller seasons.

Psyche isn’t one of them. I like Psyches set up it’s perfect. They do a decent amount of episodes that makes you want more, but they take very small breaks and split seasons that it almost feels like getting three seasons in one year. Really just just one and a half though lol.

This is of course the opposite of Breaking Bad. Which I love, but it only does like 8-10 episodes and then takes a year off. It’s just ridiculous. It is one of my fave shows, but I never find my self recommending it to people because I don’t wish that frustration and wait on anyone. It’s a show that I would recomend more after it ends. Best to just by the DVD’s and watch it it all.

It’s kind of sad to me when a show ends and it only has a total of like 50 episodes.

  4. I wonder why they are waiting until the fall. Usually it’s here right around now. I watch everything on USA, but all the other shows are nowhere as good as Psych. Can’t wait until next season

    • I don’t watch everything, but very close. I love White collar, Psyche and Burn Notice. Just really Hate Covert Affairs can’t stand it and just can’t get in to Royal Pains.

Pysche used to be my fave USA show, but Burn Notice just keeps getting better and Psyche while still great has lost a little appeal for me. It’s going the way of Scrubs taking a smart character who just sometimes acts immature and silly and turning him in to full on idiot mode. Still like it, but I imagine sometime in the next year or two I’m gonna start not being a fan. I hope they turn things around soon. I do have some hope with Shawn and Julia together I hope to see her ground him a little more in reality and making him show his IQ again rather than just seeming like a gifted autistic kid.

  5. Hmmm, Criminal Criminal father…Sounds like this show is trying to RIP Off BONES, either way I don’t watch this show, except for the episode witth John Cena.

  6. Six seasons? Really? I just started getting into this show this year and love it. I did see the Twin Peaks episode and it was hilarious. But I didn’t know it had been on for soo long. I’m just going to have to go to USA.com or buy the episodes from Amazon or something.

    • They have the first 4 seasons on Netflix, if you have an account.
