Will William Hurt Robin Hood?

Oscar winning actor William Hurt has joined the cast of Ridley Scott’s untitled Robin Hood film (previously titled Nottingham). Hurt, the veteran star of numerous Hollywood and indie films, will star as William Marshall, the Earl of Pembroke in the film that is headlined by Russell Crowe and Cate Blanchette as Robin Hood and Maid Marian. Scott Grimes, Kevin Durand and Alan Doyle are The Merry Men.

According to The Hollywood Reporter:

“William Marshall, the Earl of Pembroke, a historical figure who was one of the most powerful men in Europe. Marshall was a servant to the Plantagenet kings and one of the best jousters of the era.”

Hurt is a first class actor who has recently starred in The Incredible Hulk and Damages on television. In recent years Hurt has slipped into some meaty supporting roles – often being the best thing in the film. Notable occasions of this are Mr. Brooks, in which he made a wonderful pairing with previous Robin Hood Kevin Costner, and A History of Violence where his appearance towards the end of the film earned him an Oscar nomination and was a master class in scene stealing.

With Hurt onboard it looks like Scott finally has his cast set for the Brian Helgeland written film- it’s about time too, as Robin Hood has just started shooting in the UK.
