(NOTE: We first published this a few years ago, but have dusted it off in honor of Men in Black 3 (read our review). It is meant to be humorous and satirical, in case you're wondering).
I'd only be half-kidding if I were to say that 75% of the time that a new leading man role is announced, I hear at least three people in our comment sections nominating Will Smith for the part. In fact, in my line of work I hear the name "Will Smith" mentioned so many times that it's becoming something of a neurotic tick in my brain. Now that Men in Black 3 is here, Smith's name has resurfaced once again in the cultural zeitgeist.
It never seems to matter what the role in question is: people seem to think that Will Smith - a.k.a. The Fresh Prince, a.k.a. Big Willie, a.k.a. "His Jiggyness" - is the man for part. Granted, Smith is ultimate embodiment of old Hollywood star power. The man has conquered everything - the radio airwaves, the small screen, silver screens all over the world - and his star power is still shining so bright that even his son, Jaden, has been able to bask in its glow (if The Karate Kid's $100 million gross is any indication).
Truly it is a Will Smith world we live in and rather than rage against the machine, I'll instead help oil its gears by providing you readers (and Hollywood, if you're watching) with "The 5 Roles Will Smith NEEDS to Play".
While I agree that Will Smith doesn’t look like Obama, too young looking, too muscular, and even though he can lose the build to be scrawnier like Obama, I still think his shoulders are too broad, and I can tell you that I disagree with a lot of his politics, I don’t think it’s really appropriate to say our president, like him or not, should be portrayed by the devil… Yes, I understand when people would have said the same thing about Bush pretty much no liberals would do what I’m doing and stand up for him, but whatever, I guess we’re all different…

None of those roles are suited to Will Smith, actually, and I really like him as an actor.
If Barack Obama was shone from the right-light (meaning from a critical light — show all the broken promises — the false-hope-super-hero vs all-presidents are puppets king of light) then yeah Smith could do it. If it is a dreamy biopic then it would be a downfall type of role; kind of like Leo DiCaprio doing a climate movie after we-all-realized that Al Gore’s movie was horrifyingly in-accurate, agrandized, and undeserving of an Oscar and Nobel — In Leo’s case the topic was too heavily trod and heavy handed.
A few years ago Mr Smith was offered roles in two different movies. First was the role of Neo in the Matrix the other was James West in The Wild Wild West. He took the latter for two reasons. First he couldn’t understand the plot of the Matrix(for that matter who can understand it). Second he got to sing on the soundtrack of the Wild Wild West. Today the Matrix has made millons and the Wild west is almost forgotten. I don’t blame Mr. Smith nobody could have done anything with that script and I look forward to MIB3.
A sense of humor goes a long way. I had previously thought of Will doing the Jimmy Hendrix story. As for Frank: Old Blues would have been proud…he was just that type of guy with enough swagger to last the next lifetime. Everything i read about Frank Sinatra whom i am a great fan of tells me he and Will would have gotten along very well. Will would have understood Frank and learned from him. Yet they would have both agreed Will as Frank or Tupac or Lincoln…ugh no. Both men with a lot of swag(Will and Frank). Yet,let’s keep it real.
I’m truly sick of Will Smith. They act like he’s the only talented black actor out there. To tell you the truth, he is a fine actor, but he is overrated, and he doesn’t belong in every movie. I haven’t seen the last 5 movies he was in and I refused to see THE KARATE KID.
I thought this was a serious article. . . the only movie I’d like to see Mr. Smith play that you noted was Big. He & Jaden are good together. On a serious note, I see him playing Sam Cooke, President Obama & Duke Ellington, if ever Hollywood would allow these biopics to be made.
Will and Jaden vs the Rock in Shazam.
Will Smith as Barak Obama.
Really surprised that this wasn’t mentioned, even if the article is a goof.
Uhh…don’t you think Satan would be more appropriate and accurate, to play the Obamanation?

…and yet which of the two actors is doing better? SMH

Okay true, but give the man his dues
I sense an avalanche of jealousy!! Sad.

the five movie roles that will smith needs to play are blade, cyborg, luke cage, black panther and spawn.
i think he wouldve been a better Green Latern…
Thank you!
Hey PistolGrip? How’s about you GET a grip on reality, and see this was, at least partly, in good-natured jest?
As far as an African-American Superman goes, remember Smith in “Hancock”?
Now, I’m probably showing my age, here…but in Muhammad Ali’s heyday, there was a song ABOUT Mr. Ali, that referenced him as “the Black Superman”.
