There’s been a lot of talk about Men in Black 3 as of late, particularly when it comes to the casting side of things. Josh Brolin was rumored to be joining the cast a few months ago and the last news we heard about the project was that both Sacha Baron Cohen and Jemaine Clement (Flight of the Conchords) were being looked at for a character called “Yaz.” But unfortunately, there’s been no updates confirming whether or not any of these folks are in the film.
Fans of the first two Men in Black movies will be happy to know that both Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones have expressed interest in reprising their respective roles for the third movie, although no official announcement has been made. But now we learn that at least Smith is edging closer to starring in Men in Black 3.
Variety is reporting that Smith is going to choose between Men in Black 3 and a fantasy-adventure called The City That Sailed as his next film. I know what you’re thinking, ‘what the hell is that second movie?’ Well, luckily Variety provides us with some details on the plot:
“City that Sailed” revolves around a New York street magician who is unhappily separated from his young daughter. The girl, who moves to London, finds magic candles that make her wishes comes true, with unintended consequences: The island of Manhattan separates from the continent and floats toward England, bringing her dad ever closer.
Sounds like a very interesting and rather odd premise. Smith’s production company Overbrook Films has developed The City That Sailed and brought it to Fox. There’s no director attached to the project as of yet but it’s been written by The Truman Show‘s Andrew Niccol. Needless to say, it would be pretty easy for Smith to slip into the lead role of the movie.
However, Men in Black 3 is also a draw; not only was Smith’s part in the franchise one of his mega-star-making roles, but the franchise has also proven a goldmine for both him and Sony. The first movie grossed almost $600 million worldwide, with the second one not doing as well, but still making almost $450 million. Isn’t the third one pretty much guaranteed mega-bucks?
Neither Sony nor Fox would comment on the situation, but insiders are saying that either Men in Black 3 or The City That Sailed will be Smith’s next starring project (his first since 2008′s Seven Pounds). Personally, I’d like to see him reprise his role as Agent Jay and don the black suit and shades once more. Nothing against The City That Sailed, as I actually think it sounds like a really interesting film, but personally I would prefer it if he did another Men in Black first.
Do you like the sound of The City That Sailed? Would you rather Smith takes on Men in Black 3 as his next film?
Men in Black 3 is written by Etan Cohen (Tropic Thunder) and it’s been rumored that director of the first two movies, Barry Sonnenfeld, will be back for the third. It is scheduled for a tentative 2011 release.
There’s currently no word on when The City That Sailed will hit theaters.
