Just thought who’d make another good Captain Nemo: Ben Kingsley. I can definitely see Nemo as part Gandhi, part Don Lomax from Sexy Beast.

Vid, Alan Moore and Kevin O’Neill had a great Indian prince interpretation of Nemo in the first two volumes of The League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen (the movie was a travesty and pushed him into the background – rubbish Nautilus as well).

Jerseycajun, totally agree about the age and presence thing where Will Smith’s concerned.

Stark, didn’t Patrick Stewart already play Nemo in a TV version of Mysterious Island? I haven’t seen it but I can imagine he’d be a perfect bit of casting.

Well, considering that Nemo was very successfully played by a non-Indian (James Mason), I don’t think it’s necessary from that standpoint that the role had to be an actor of a particular ethnicity or race. That said, I don’t envision Will Smith as having the gravitas the role of Nemo demands. He’s capable of doing dramatic roles, but that doesn’t equate to presenting the presence that usually only age, the look of experience, and a voice that carries and exudes strength conveys. Ned land is a better suit to his abilities, but he’ll have to can the “Aw HELL no, action flick shtick and turn to a different source of inspiration for this kind of adventure film in order for it to be successful.

I like Will Smith but not for this movie. And just because McG wants to work with him. Oh gosh. I guess it will be taking place in the modern era or Smith will be play a guy like in Wild Wild West.
