Will Jumper Be A Cool Little Sci Fi Flick?

jumper fall Will Jumper Be A Cool Little Sci Fi Flick?I’ve been reading about a movie coming soon that stars Hayden “I was a lousy Anakin Skywalker” Christensen and Samuel L. “I’m a badass in every single movie” Jackson. The movie is called Jumper, and here’s the concept for the film:

A genetic anomaly allows a young man to teleport himself anywhere. He discovers this gift has existed for centuries and finds himself in a war that has been raging for thousands of years between “Jumpers” and those who have sworn to kill them.

At first glance the description didn’t do much for me, but the trailer is kind of cool. Check it out below (thanks to IGN).

The first time you watch it, it almost makes you do a double take early on with the “hiccups” in movement. As it moves along it gets pretty cool and even with the freaky white hair I still love watching Sam Jackson on the screen. icon smile Will Jumper Be A Cool Little Sci Fi Flick?

The background they’ve built into the story is interesting, including things like the fact that a jumper can only jump to a place that he has been before or a place that he can see or that the emotional state of the jumper affects the amount of collateral damage caused by the jump. This damage is caused by what they’re calling a “jumpscar” which is a rip in spacetime. It can either by small and be barely visible or large and cause lots of damage, depending on if the jumper is freaked out and/or inexperienced.

It’s by Doug Limon, the director of The Bourne Identity and Mr & Mrs Smith and that’s a pretty damned good pedigree.

Jumper opens February 15, 2008. (Click here to visit the official site)

  1. I’m not much impressed by the trailer but I do think the story has potential and I’m curious to see how Christensen does outside of the SW world.

  2. Yeah, it doesn’t look awesome or anything, but it might be one of those little sleepers. Maybe it will be a pleasant surprise.

I’m curious to see Hayden in this as well.

  3. Looks ok, maybe the next Cult classic?

  4. Am I the only one getting a Highlander vibe off this? It actually looks pretty decent, count me interested.

  5. SNR, yeah, totally!

I thought about putting that in the post but decided not to. The differences are that they’re not immortal and that they’re not trying to kill each other, there’s another group of people that are trying to kill them. But yeah, the fact that it’s been going on for centuries and such did give me that feeling.

  6. This is an adaptation of the book although a lot of the story was rewritten to include the whole war plot. Still, looks interesting visually enough to go see in the theater, and contrary to popular belief, when Christiansen isn’t forced to mutter lines written by Lucas, he can be pretty good. I’m there.

  7. Adverse, I *did* get the impression that the reason the actors came across so terribly in the later Star Wars movies was Lucas’ doing and not their fault.

  8. After admiring special effects in Smallville, Heroes and Journeyman (at times), I’m not impressed by the easiest effect in the world–what is it, a jump-cut?–being used 1,000 times in a movie. Yeah, you can’t be stressed or you’ll rip the fabric of the Whatever Continuum.

Give me some bang for my buck! At least the Enterprise flashes into warp speed. Nightcrawler “bamfs” and Hiro looks like he’s got cramps. Oooh, the camera stops while Hayden walks to the refrigerator. I’ve got CHILLS.

  9. Consider me interested. I like how their ability is simple one that can be be used for lots of things.

  10. Dude, you’re funny. :-)

  11. Looks cool and a neat concept.
I thought Hayden was great in SW…
I had no probs with any of the Star Wars films. I know that others did but jheesh its a space fantasy.
Vic, id love to see some updates on this one.
