I would think that if "Fantastic Four" isn't successful as a movie there won't *be* a franchise, much as there isn't a "Daredevil" franchise.

Personally, I think that Marvel really raised the bar with the Spiderman movies and anything else they put out is compared to that (and should be).

I like a fun, no-brainer action flick as much as the next guy (I really do) :P , but real fans of all these superhero characters grew up with them and there's a desire out there to have them done with some sort of respect to the source material.

Is it that noone thinks that 'F4' will be successful as a movie or successful as a franchise? The trailers are entertaining enough, though admittedly nothing special. I mean even the 'Hulk' made $130 million in the US, and the Hulk has to be 1 of the worst superhero films made. I think that 'Begins' will be the equal of 'Spiderman', that's almost a given. But I'm holding out on 'Superman'. I respect Singer and I do feel that his departure from the 'X-Men' will prove fatal to the franchise. But that being said, I still holding out on 'Superman'. Maybe it's because I'm a child of the 70's and Donner's 'Superman' still resonates as the best edition of the entire franchise.

I doubt he'll be dropping out.

Good point on the Arad comments, although I think the emphasis on that statement is due to the fact that outside of "Spiderman" and "X-Men" the other franchises haven't exactly hit one out of the park and you don't want the fans to turn on you.

If that happens they'll find fault with every movie that comes out. If they're on his side, they'll look for the redeeming qualities in every movie instead.

Ratner is officially directing X3?! Yikes... I'll start setting my expectations appropriately low. Don't get me wrong; I don't think it will be a crapfest just because he's directing. It's just that Bryan Singer's films were thoughtful, intelligent and engrossing. Ratner's film will most likely have none of those qualities. Here's hoping he ends up dropping out like the other two did, but I won't hold my breath.

The trailers for Fantastic Four lead me to believe that the movie will be reasonably entertaining, but I don't think it will bring anything new or exciting to the table. (Some of the one-liners in the trailers were positively groan-inducing.) As for Avi Arad's comments, what else is he supposed to say? Even if it genuinely sucks (which I don't know that it does), he can't just go out and say that. Bill Cosby did that with Leonard Part 6, and look what happened to his film career.
