Who Should Play Lobo?

MTV Splash Page has started up a weekly column where they fantasy-cast their favorite upcoming superhero movies. And since we here at Screen Rant have been on the “What If?” track for the last few MONTHS with posts like “What If Disney/Marvel Buys Superman?” or “What Will Batman 3 Be About?“, we naturally have a reaction.
Last week we responded to the question of who should play Sinestro in the upcoming Green Lantern movie; MTV had a strong list of (albeit somewhat improbable) candidates, but still missed the obvious casting call of Hugo Weaving, which our Screen Rant readers jumped on in seconds (they’re good like that
).
With the recent announcement that Guy Ritchie will direct DC/WB’s Lobo movie, Splash Page is wondering who should get the role and after reviewing their picks…let’s just say a few names need to be added to the pool.
Ok, so here is who MTV picked to play Lobo:
Vinnie Jones
Christopher Meloni
Mickey Rourke
Kurt Russell
Jason Statham
Head on over to Splash Page to see pics of the actors and arguments for why they fit the role.
It’s a solid list of some good actors to be sure, but WAY off the mark, IMO. In fact, the only man in that list that I don’t think is too old or doesn’t fit the part would be Vinnie Jones, and I don’t know if he has enough clout to carry an entire superhero film on his shoulders.
Makes you wonder how familiar the person who made that list is (or isn’t) with Lobo to begin with. The character is a foul-mouthed, interstellar bounty hunter of the DC Universe; he rides a pimped-out space bike, is strong enough to take on Superman, with enough energy left over to drink, party and get laid all night by the lovely ladies of the cosmos. You need a guy that can play dirty without question, or the character won’t be done justice.
But I digress. After we announced that the Lobo movie was moving forward with Guy Ritchie at the helm, our superhero experts here at Screen Rant tossed out two names that I think are right on the money:
JEFFREY DEAN MORGAN

Morgan has shown that he can play a gruff, burly, merciless, psychotic anti-hero with his turn as The Comedian in DC/WB’s adaptation of Watchmen early this year. And, with the actor already signed on as the lead in another DC/WB comic book film (The Losers) he’s earning himself a lot of clout both with the studio and comic book fans everywhere as a go-to guy for these kinds of roles. Maybe it’s time for him to step up and take center stage with Lobo?
DANNY TREJO

Trejo is a well-known face on the big screen for his reoccurring roles as a thug, henchman, gangster, hitman, goon and all-around badass in just about any and every film that involves crime South of the boarder. Trejo has also demonstrated that he has more to offer than a scowl, in movies like Spy Kids and SherryBaby – the latter being a well-received indie film where Trejo stood out as a sympathetic ex-con trying to help a female ex-con get back on her feet. Trejo will step up to center stage next year to play the titular character in Robert Rodriguez’s Machete, so he will definitely have some practice as a leading man.
As for his qualifications: Trejo has done hard prison time for armed robbery, won lightweight and welterweight boxing titles IN PRISON, been down the road of drug addiction and back, has enough tattoos to be considered an art exhibit…
Wait, was I just describing Danny Trejo? Or Lobo?
Anyway, those are the two nominees that Screen Rant would like to throw into the ring for consideration to play Lobo. But what do you think? Are we more on the money than MTV?

Around the web:

im thinking danny trejo or a fully make=up’ed gerard butler. comon, butler in that crazy outfit being the badass he is. AWESOME
Kevin Durand
Rob Zombie?he kinda looks like Lobo
Hmm, Meloni and Statham are too thin, Kurt Russel isn’t scary looking enough. Mickey Rourke often looks too tired to be totally scary.
You need someone big, broad and with crazy eyes.
So out of the first few suggested, I go with Vinnie Jones
when i first saw the feed, i thought Triple H and i remembered that he cant act (see blade 3). I like danny Trejo (check out the documentary champion) but he’s a bit too stiff for lobo. lobo should be a huge guy with a david lee roth kind of personality. i’m not sure who that would be.
Gerard Butler would work, Kevin Durand would work, JDM would work too, but out of those 3 Durand is my pick he looks crazy and can act crazy (see Smoking Aces).
Danny Trejo is an awesome suggestion. Never would have thought of him though. Kudos!
Trejo or Rourke
I think either Jeffery Dean Morgan or Mr. Trejo would be AWESOME as Lobo.
if I really really really had to choose………. I choose Danny Trejo.
Lobo is pretty much my favourite DC character.
I CAN’T WAIT for this movie to get made
vin diesel anyone?
I don’t like the idea of Danny Trejo just doesn’t work for me. I say JDM is the best choice by far. Kevin Durand is my number 2 followed by Micky Rourke.
I think Kevin Durand would be SWEEEEEET.
My grandma,,,,
She’s a bitch you’ll see,,,,,
Take this to an R rating,,,
Ok.. I can see it your way Kofi, but hire them both and pit them against each other! Now who do want as Lobo???
Superheroexpert…I feel so proud now =D
JDM all the way imagine him in full Makeup and Outfitt = BAM its like Steward and Prof X. They just match! Plus he’s the right age and is a actor i trust reading the comics within the preparation for the role.
Haggislaw not to mention JDM can carry a movie and has reached a certain known status that it’s not a laughable concept. So our big fan casting choices that we came up with on screen rant are JDM and thug number 2?
Anyone? Brad Garrett? Anyone? Also acceptable are Trejo and Durand. Butler’s not dirty enough.
I think Roger is onto something, Vin Diesel?? He might be able to pull off Lobo, what do you guys think?
KEVIN DURAND is the only choice!!!
Boy MTV has some weak picks there lol! ; D
KEVIN DURAND people, KEVIN DURAND!!! ; )
Tyler Mane, as someone said lobo looks like Zombie, so does Tyler, and he is almost 7′and looks like a bad mother….
well JEFFERY DEAN MORGAN has the look & Trejo has the past.
when i hear the word LOBO any where near the word MOVIE, all i thing of is Andrew Bryniarski as Lobo in short-film,
“The Lobo Paramilitary Christmas Special”.
and that guy pulled it off.
and god knows JEFFERY DEAN MORGAN can act.
i loved him in WATCHMEN.
and love him as John Winchester in SuperNatural.
i thank if he commits to the role he could pull it off.
Gerard Butler…
Come on guys Mickey Rourke is a great pick. I don’t think he’s too old. I mean he’s playing Whiplash in the upcoming Iron Man sequel… and as Ryan Reynolds as shown us it’s ok to star in DC movies and Marvel movies, so I say… why not?

Should James Preston Rogers be LOBO?
Lobo is a fictional character that appears in the comic books published by DC Comics. The character first appears in Omega Men #3 (June 1983), and was created by Roger Slifer and Keith Giffen. An alien, Lobo works as an interstellar mercenary and bounty hunter. Although introduced as a hardened, rarely-used noir villain in the 1980s, he languished in limbo until his revival as an anti-hero biker in the early 1990s. The character enjoyed a short run as one of DC’s most popular characters throughout the 1990s. This version of Lobo was intended to be an over-the-top parody of Marvel Comics superhero Wolverine (in issue #41 of Deadpool, another Marvel series, Lobo himself was parodied in the likeness of Dirty Wolff, a large blue skinned man who drove a demonic motorcycle).

yeah ok nathan lol.
hands down, it should be Vin Diesel playing Lobo
I was thinking Butler also. However I think a noname can be just as good.
Lobo has been on a few cartoons however he is not really out there in the public eye.
So depending on how they portray the movie will have a big affect on who plays the part.
I vote Trejo. He pretty much is Lobo already.
