‘Whitney’ Replacing ‘Animal Practice’ in November, But Where’s ‘Community’?

Just one week after hearing that the October 19th season premieres of Whitney and Community on NBC had been delayed, one of these shows now has a official premiere date.

Today, NBC announced their first cancellation of the season by giving Animal Practice the axe after the ratings didn’t impress executives enough to keep it around. Whitney will air in the now vacant Wednesday time slot at 8pm starting on Wednesday, November 14th.

This isn’t immensely surprising as we previously predicted that a canceled show might allow for Whitney and/or Community to escape their dreaded Friday night time slots. After all, NBC did say, “When we have a better idea of viewing patterns in the next few weeks, we will announce new season premieres of ‘Whitney’ and ‘Community.’

But we’re still not sure what this means for Community. Now the series – coming into a shortened 15-episode season 4 – might be all by itself on Friday unless Guys with Kids, NBC’s other low-rated freshman comedy series, gets canceled, too.

Honestly, I think the best option would be to put Community on Tuesdays with Go On and toss The New Normal over to the Thursday night line-up when 30 Rock finishes its 15-episode final season. That means we’d have to wait a little bit longer for the return of Community, but it might be worth it so the show has a fighting chance at surviving.

Either way, this game NBC seems to be playing with Community fans isn’t good for the show as the average viewer doesn’t know what’s going on behind the scenes. If anything, this shows that NBC doesn’t care about Community, and I’m not sure they’re invested in the series lasting, even through a full season 4.

Whitney returns on November 14th @8pm. Community‘s premiere date, as you know, is still up in the air. Stay tuned.

  1. Who is Whitney dating at NBC ?

    • Dating or sleeping with? That show is atrocious. She’s a Hollywood enigma, I don’t get it.

  2. Yea makes sense, replace a failing not very funny show with an even less funny show that somehow got a second season…meanwhile keep their best comedy on the bench. Makes sense NBC…ugh.

I just want Community back….this is our last season barring a miracle…so just bring it. Put it on Friday with Grimm and call it a day NBC. Cancel it and hopefully it can find a home where it will be appreciated (yes I know that likely wont happen)

    • “Cancel it and hopefully it can find a home where it will be appreciated”, except NBC will do like Fox did with Firefly and hold on to it as long as they can so that others can’t profit from it. Will Firefly ever come back? Sure… In ten years with half as good lookalike actors since Joss is busy with Marvel for the foreseeable future and most of everyone else is busy with one thing or another.

  3. Really NBC? I understand that you’re keeping Community as an “ace in the hole” (NBC-speak for ‘we hope you lose interest’) but cutting the season to 15 episodes AND passing up an opportunity to put it back on as shows start failing. Not that Whitney is a BAD show, it showed a lot of promise last year and if the cast and crew can hone their skills it could be a surprise hit. But Community is a perfect fit to go with Go On, especially since if you start airing them together soon their schedule will line up nicely apparently. Don’t pull a Britta!

  4. REALLY???!?!?!!!?? a show with a monkey doctor didn’t work??!! That is sooooooo surprising. [/sarcasm]

Give me a break. Who even pitched that idea? someone at NBC should be fired for even greenlighting it.

Maybe we’ll all get lucky and Community will get a second chance on netflix like Arrested Development. (although there is no way it would work 10 years later… it would have to be more immediate.)

and I agree completely with Slayer. Who is Whitney ….. dating…. at NBC? her show is, was and always will be, the opposite of funny.

  5. I really liked Annie’s Boobs on Animal Practice (yes, that was the same monkey from Community), but the rest of the characters fell flat. But I don’t understand why they are replacing the monkey show with someone else who flings poo? (I’m speaking metaphorically saying that Whitney spews out verbal diarrhea and not figuratively saying she actually flings poo)

    • and fans of Community aren’t the real victims…fans of Tyler Labine are the ones who are really hurt by this. After 3 failed sitcoms on 3 networks (Sons of Tuscon on FOX, Mad Love on CBS, and now Animal Practice on NBC), one has to wonder if he’ll ever reach the greatness of a character like Sock from Reaper again. Because apparently at least one network thinks Whitney Cummings is funnier than him (and they are wrong).

      • Yea I just watched reaper on Netflix he was great….wish I would’ve known about it when it was still on.

  6. I watched an episode of Whitney last week… I don’t see the point. It’s just not funny.
Community on the other hand, is one of the funniest shows I’ve seen in a long time.

What is NBC thinking?! Holding back this awesome show is a mistake!

  7. NBC is streets behind yet again. Community may not only be the best comedy on NBC, but on tv. NBC is really wrinkling my brain.

  8. Wait wait wait wait wait. Animal Practice was cancelled? That show is HILARIOUS. I have NEVER laughed while watching Whitney.

  9. Maybe Netflix can pick it up like it has with “Arrested Development”.

  10. No respect. No respect for Community.

  11. Please, we’ve been waiting FOREVER. Bring back Community, scrap Whitney.

  12. I really like Animal Practice. I never watched it when it came on though. I always recorded it and watched it later. I hate Whitney. It’s just all around crappy.
