Director Roland Emmerich certainly loves to document chaos in the White House. Back in 1996, Independence Day featured the classic moment when the Commander-in-Chief narrowly escapes its destruction at the hands of an alien spacecraft. Next summer, mayhem will ensue again at the President’s residence in the director’s White House Down.
The action-thriller stars Channing Tatum as a policeman who’s been denied the chance to join the Secret Service. However, he soon finds himself in the midst of an attack on the White House itself, wherein he must protect the President (Jamie Foxx) and search for his missing daughter.
Entertainment Tonight recently made a visit to the set of the film, now shooting in Montreal. Check out the above footage for our first look at the film. The production crew has reportedly painstakingly recreated the actual White House.
Emmerich – whose filmography includes disaster films like the aforementioned Independence Day and The Day After Tomorrow - may not seem like the natural choice for a thriller like this. After all, he has traditionally specialized in overblown, effects-heavy films, so this project marks a shift in scope from his usual bag of tricks.
In fact, White House Down looks like it may bear a similar plot and tone to another Presidential thriller, Air Force One. While that 1997 film saw terrorists hijack the President’s plane, this time a paramilitary group invades his home. If White House Down can match the broad appeal of that earlier film (which went on to earn $315 million worldwide), then it will only continue star Tatum’s string of hits. It’s already been mentioned that he may even direct the sequel to this summer’s smash Magic Mike.
In any case, White House Down is definitely one to watch for next summer. It may be too early to tell if the film will ultimately prove an effective thrill ride or just another wannabe blockbuster, but with Tatum and Foxx onboard, the project shows promise.

Foxx as the prez just running around? Won’t he look a little too young for that? He could have played an agent as well and kicked some butt.
He aint only running around. He get some good fights from what i read in the script
This looks good. I like to read that sort of thriller-novel, so this will be right up my alley. Definite thumbs-up!

The idea of a paramilitary group invading the White House is dumb. They couldn’t do it. If their objective is to spirit the President away, they couldn’t do that. The building sounds like the sort of symbolic target we were told after 9/11 that terrorists crave to destroy, but it was already burned down in the War of 1812. So what? Unless the trailer features a dumbwaiter chase, I’ll probably forget about this.

Yes, Freeman should be playing the president in this movie, but alas, he’s already got a role in the other White House terrorist film, Olympus Has Fallen. He’s not the President in that movie either.
Jamie is old enough to be President.
