(And what a kick that your name is Neil, too. Heh. Everyone start singing “It’s a Small World.” Talk about songs that stick in your head! I think I’d far prefer the Dr. Horrible songs stuck in my head over that one.)

Yes Commentary! The Musical is awesome and yes, Nathan’s song is great (doubly awesome for me since my first name is Neil, so it’s almost like he’s singing about me… except I don’t sing on Broadway or get Emmy nods). From what I’ve heard, there are plans to allow the tracks to be bought on iTunes, but as of now, nothing yet.

@Joshi: Are the musical commentary songs available for purchase & mp3/iTunes download? I have the Sing-Along Blog songs saved in my iTunes library, but I would love some of those commentary songs! Some of them are even funnier and catchier than the show’s songs. (And I think Nathan Fillion gets to show off more vocal range in the musical commentary.)

Bruce, do you know if Maurissa Tancharoen and Joss’ brothers Zack and Jed were included on that Emmy win, since they were part of the creation of the program? I would hope they all won an Emmy. They deserve it!

Lemmus: Yes… I am focused on the more weight of the award, the merrier. Though I might admit I got overly excited about the Emmy news and things slipped from my head in the clamor!

I hear what you’re saying Joshi… I’ve got a friend who refuses to watching anything older than he is. He really misses out on some classics, but everyone makes the bed they sleep in.

I honestly wouldn’t show it to people who weren’t at least open to listening to musicals. Hell I’ve met some Whedon fans who didn’t like musicals and loved “Once More with Feeling” so they’d be up for it.

Basically, as long as I let them know from the get go that yes, it’s a musical and yes the music is actually pretty damned awesome (don’t ask me to pick a favourite song… I WON’T DO IT!), they tend to like it, but if they say from the get go “yeah, doesn’t sound like my type of thing” I won’t try. I know a lost cause when I see one.

lol. Wait ’til the 5th. The 5 or so people who haven’t liked it (never really gave it a chance to be fair) that I’ve shown it to just couldn’t get past the musical aspect.

It’s one of the best acted (even cheesy Capt Hammer is semi-likeable with Nathan Fillion playing him though), best scripted and best scored pieces I’ve seen in ages. If Whedon knocked this up with friends and family during the strike just imagine what he could do movie-wise with full studio backing.

At 45 minutes, I probably wouldn’t want to pay full price, but I’d absolutely watch this in a cinema.

What I meant was it’s quite well thought of in critic circles but any awards would widen it up to a greater audience. The Hugo award is great but it’s a slightly niche award if you know what I mean. It’s more of a comedy-musical than a Sci-Fi or Fantasy piece (to me anyway) and should be seen by everyone. Twice!

For every 5 people I’ve got to watch it, 4 have loved it and the fifth can’t get past the songs and to be fair I probably wouldn’t have went to a cinema to watch it but it is absolutely fantastic.

It does depend a bit on what you call “official recognition”. Dr.Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog also picked up a Hugo award for Best Dramatic Presentation – Short Form in 2009. While the Emmy will certainly carry more weight in Hollywood for the next few years, and help him get money for other projects, the Hugo will recommend the piece to Science Fiction & Fantasy fans around the world for many years to come.
