Warning: This article contains spoilers for House of the Dragon episode 6 and the Fire & Blood book.

House of the Dragon episode 6 featured the death of Laena Velaryon, which spells a different future for one of the show's central characters: Daemon Targaryen. Daemon and Laena were revealed to have gotten married during the time jump in between episodes 5 and 6. House of the Dragon episode 6 picks up 10 years after its predecessor, with Laena and Daemon having eloped in that time, now living across the sea in Pentos after traveling around Essos.

The duo was shown to have sired two daughters in this time, Baela and Rhaena Targaryen, with a third child on the way. The marriage between Daemon and Laena was hinted at during the House of the Dragon episode 5 wedding between Rhaenyra Targaryen and Laenor Velaryon, where Daemon and Laena engaged in flirtatious conversations during the wedding feast. The time jump in House of the Dragon episode 6 confirmed the marriage between the two, only to feature a major twist that reveals a different future on the horizon for Deamon.

At the end of Daemon and Laena's story in House of the Dragon episode 6, Laena goes into labor with their third child. However, Laena is unable to give birth, and Daemon is faced with the same decision that plagued his brother Viserys in episode 1: save his wife or attempt to save the baby at Laena's expense. Before Daemon can decide, Laena goes to her dragon, Vhagar, and orders the dragon to kill her via its flames, leaving Daemon and his children without their wife and mother respectively.

As is par for the course in Westerosi politics, the loss of Daemon's wife will put him on the market for another suitor. Daemon's second marriage is revealed in Fire & Blood, the book upon which House of the Dragon is based. Daemon's next wife will actually be Rhaenyra Targaryen, played by Emma D'Arcy and formerly Milly Alcock. Despite Daemon being Rhaenyra's uncle, their love affair has been seeded throughout House of the Dragon episodes 1-5 with the two sharing passionate moments in a pleasure house as well as at Rhaenyra's wedding to Laenor. After Laena's death, and the eventual passing of Laenor, Rhaenyra and Daemon get married without the knowledge of King Viserys. The two eventually have more children, Aegon III Targaryen and Viserys II Targaryen, alongside the stillborn Visenya Targaryen. Daemon and Rhaenyra stay together throughout the Dance of Dragons, with Daemon being a major combatant during the war on behalf of the Blacks, the faction opposing Aegon II Targaryen.

What Happens To Daemon & Laena's Children

Rhaena Baela Targaryen

With that being said, House of the Dragon will need to show what happens to Daemon and Laena's children: Baela and Rhaena Targaryen. In the book, Baela and Rhaena are betrothed to Jacaerys and Lucerys Velaryon respectively, Rhaenyra's sons to Laenor Velaryon. This makes the two girls betrothed to their cousins and step-brothers after Daemon's marriage to Rhaenyra Targaryen. During the Dance of Dragons, Rhaena stayed safely in the Vale, while Baela spent most of her time in Dragonstone. Baela was eventually captured by Aegon II and used as leverage against her grandfather, Corlys Velaryon.

Eventually, after the Dance of Dragons was over, Rhaena and Baela were both betrothed again after the deaths of Jacaerys and Lucerys during the war. Rhaena married Ser Corwyn Corbray whom she had met in the Vale. In her later life, after the death of Corwyn, Rhaena married Garmund Hightower and had six children. Baela, on the other hand, fled King's Landing to Driftmark and married her cousin Alyn Velaryon. The two had one child, Laena Velaryon, named after Rhaena and Baela's mother. A lot of Rhaena and Baela's lives factor into the events of the Dance of Dragons, which House of the Dragon will almost surely cover in later seasons.

With Laena Velaryon's death, her children are set to play their part in the series without the protection of their mother - something House of the Dragon is sure to explore in its future. Similarly, Daemon's marriage with Rhaenyra will likely be covered in the final four episodes of House of the Dragon season 1, meaning much of his and his daughters' futures will begin to be set up in the coming episodes. As the show's timeline continues to skip forward, House of the Dragon moves ever closer to the Dance of Dragons and the true beginning of the end for House Targaryen.

New episodes on House of the Dragon release Sundays on HBO & HBO Max.
