10 years have passed since Ghostface's last onscreen bloody rampage in Scream 3. He will get to terrify a new crew of young adults - and a few older, more familiar faces as well - in next year's Scream 4.

Horror has been defined for the last decade by series like the Saw franchise and remakes of classic slasher films such as Friday the 13th and A Nightmare on Elm Street. Director Wes Craven spoke to EW recently and admitted that Scream 4 will very much reflect the modern-day horror landscape.

Here's how Craven put it, in his own words:

“There’s been a whole decade of horror films that in one way or another followed a certain pattern. Like you had torture porn, [and] a ton of remakes. The first ['Scream'] was very much observing where horror had been for the last 10 to 20 years. And ['Scream 4'] is very much looking at where horror has been for the last 10 years. There’s always somebody trying to figure out what the rules are to keep from getting killed.”

Neve Campbell will reprise her role as Sidney Prescott for the new Scream movie, which will also feature the return of soon-to-be-former-real-life married couple David Arquette and Courteney Cox as, respectively, Dwight "Dewey" Riley and Gale Weathers - who we learned last month has abandoned her career as a journalist and is suffering from writer's block just before the murders get going in Scream 4.

Scream 4 begins with Sidney - who is now a published author - returning to Woodsboro to visit her cousin, Jill (Emma Roberts), her aunt, Kate (Mary McDonnell), and some old friends. Trouble ensues thereafter as the bodies start piling up and Sidney has to deal with yet another masked psychopath with murder and mayhem on their mind.

We can certainly expect Scream 4 to up the ante, in terms of graphic violence and the twisted manner in which characters are off'd, from previous Scream movies. The original Scream was essentially an old-fashioned slasher movie with a contemporary twist, which looks to also be the case with its third sequel - but are moviegoers still interested in seeing that sort of thing?

Scream 4 arrives in theaters in the U.S. on April 15th, 2011.
