Today in Screen Rant’s weekly TV Wrap Up, we have some great casting news for 24, we’ll be talking about David Carradine’s appearance in Fox’s new show Mental and we also have some Heroes casting news, the possibility that My Name Is Earl may be getting new legs, some news on Ghost Whisperer, The Sarah Connor Chronicles coming to DVD and a bit about Futurama‘s, err, future.

We’ll wrap it up with ratings from last week.  This week in the ratings section, I thought I’d try something new and toss in some cable viewer numbers.

24 Gets More Cast Members

I’ve previously reported that Freddie Prinze Jr. had joined 24 and now Fox has added more cast members to the popular action series.

The actress I’m most excited about seeing come on board is Katee Sackhoff.  Sackhoff played the tough-luck viper pilot Kara Thrace / Starbuck on Ronald D. Moore’s Battlestar Galactica and did a believably depressing characterization of Kara Thrace.

Sackhoff will be playing expert CTU data analyst Dana Walsh and I can’t wait to see what she brings to 24.

Also on board are Mykelti Williamson (Forest Gump) as the man in charge of CTU, Brian Hastings.  John Boyd will play CTU analyst Arlo Glass, Chris Diamantopoulos and Jennifer Westfeldt (Grey’s Anatomy) is an ambitious journalist with ties to the situation as it unfolds.

The Emmy Award-winning drama starring Kiefer Sutherland returns for its next day with a two-night, four-hour premiere beginning Sunday, Jan. 17th, 2010 (9:00-11:00 PM ET/PT) on FOX.

I can’t wait.

Fox Will Still Air Their David Carradine Episode

Despite the sadness surrounding the events of recent time with David Carradine passing on, Fox is still planning to air the episode of their new show, Mental in which Carradine appears.

Mental is Fox’s newest House-like medical drama.

Carradine will play a famous professor, author and philosopher named Gideon Graham.  Graham lapses into a non-responsive catatonic state after he gets struck by lightning.

It will be an odd and sad episode indeed.  I’m not sure how I feel about this, but I am sure that with recent events, the episode will probably net higher than expected viewer numbers.

darth maul Weekly TV Wrap Up June 11, 2009

Earlier this month, a fellow Screen Rant scribe wrote about Robert Knepper and Madeline Zima joining the cast of Heroes.  We can now add a few more names to that list.

Ray Park (who played Darth Maul in Star Wars: Episode 1 and is in the new upcoming G.I. Joe movie) and Deanne Bray have also signed on the dotted line to appear in multiple episodes.

The word is that Park will be playing the role of a knife thrower while Bray will be the deaf love interest of one of the main characters.

Speaking of Heroes, NBC announced on June 4th the release of The Heroes Comic Reader for the iPhone.

The NBC press release states:

“Fans can pick up where the on-air story leaves off with original graphic novels that extend and deepen stories and characters.”

If that’s your thing, then this is a neat add-on for franchise for fans.

Futurama Lives On

Futurama was picked up for 26 new 30 minute episodes – but Fox didn’t pick them up.  The new home of Futurama will be Comedy Central.

Comedy Central comes to the rescue for the fans.

My Name Is Earl May Not Be Dead

As it stands right now, TBS is in talks with 20th Century Fox about having a 13 episode revival if you will, of fan-favorite My Name Is Earl.

Keep in mind, this is a preliminary development and nothing is for certain.

Ghost Whisperer

Ghost Whisperer may be doing the time warp.

News on the street is saying that CBS execs are toying with the idea of leaping 5 years into the future.  The thought is that since Melinda’s child was going to be a more powerful psychic than she is, that it would be easier to address it as a 5-year-old.

Sounds reasonable… and who isn’t toying with calendar adjustments these days?

TV Ratings From June 1st to 7th, 2009

This week, I’ve added the top cable shows to the list.  Don’t fret about the low viewer numbers for the shows.  Cable traditionally produces lower numbers for various reasons.

The top 10 shows list from last week brought a surprise of sorts as there were no reality television shows in the top 10, unless you count sports or a President Obama special as types of reality program.

law order svu2 Weekly TV Wrap Up June 11, 2009

The NBA Finals gave ABC the top 2 slots last week, with Law and Order: SVU being the best rated scripted drama coming in at 3rd.

CBS’s top show was rated 4th overall, that being NCIS of course.

Even 60 Minutes made it into the top-10 last week.

NBC’s ridiculous reality show, I’m A Celebrity, Get Me Out Of Here, and all it’s stupid media noise from a pair of indecisive blonds gave it a debut with 6.4 million viewers on Monday.  NBC played the show over multiple days and it subsequently dropped in viewers.

The premiere of the cleavage laced reality show called Here Come the Newlyweds showed up on ABC, but it premiered with just under 5 million viewers.  I only know what I know from the ads that were shoving things in my face.

The CW’s best rated show was a reality show about marriage… I guess, called Hitched Or Ditched.  Repeats of Smallville and Supernatural followed in the ranks.

On the bright side, the best rated cable show was the season premiere of Burn Notice.  Yet the reality show Jon & Kate Plus 8 came in just a few ticks behind Burn Notice, but don’t fret.  Next season might be called “Kate Dumps Jon” from the way things are going.  Jon & Kate is only rated as well as it is because of all the woes that the couple that have been in the media.

It’s amazing how bad press will get people with googly wide eyed fascination to tune into something.  As if they’re going to cull something from it.  Meh.

Personal note:  If you’re a fan of The Unit, you might want to check out Flashpoint.  I find it’s very similar to The Unit but is focused on a local level as opposed to an international level.  I’ve been surprised that they can take SWAT-like situations and make a decent story line out of them as they focus on both the SRU team and the victims involved.  You might want to check it out.  I did, and now I’m hooked.

That’s it for this weeks Thursday report.  We had some good news on Futurama and hopeful news for My Name Is Earl.  And like I said, I can’t wait to see what Katee Sackhoff will do on 24.

As always, let us know if there’s anything you want to know about or covered and we’ll take a look and let you know what we find out.
