screen rant logo Weekend Movie News Wrap Up: October 4, 2009 This week:

Zombieland eats the competition; Josh Brolin is the new Sean Penn in Cartel; Jessica Alba is added to Fockers; Kim and Kelly get Adjusted; Sarsgaard joins Cruise and Diaz; Sheen, Unger and Nesbitt are Shown The Way by Emilio Estevez.

Zombieland exceeded expectations and managed to reach number one of the top ten at the box office this week. The Woody Harrelson stars in Zombieland and it should make about $25 million this weekend. That’s about a million more than its reported production budget!

Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs should manage another $16 million or so giving the animated film a good $82 million total.

Toy Story I and 2 3D was third giving the animated combo a solid $13 million. Considering that these puppies have been available on DVD for over a decade bodes well for Toy Story 3 3D when it hits next year.

Surrogates, starring Bruce Willis, was fourth with a little over $7 million. With just $26.5 million in the pot it looks like Willis’ international appeal will have to help turn a profit.

Ricky Gervais’ Invention of Lying stole $7 million from audiences wallets over the past three days.

Drew Barrymore’s directorial debut, Whip It, had a disappointing start with a paltry $5 million.

Michael Moore’s Capitalism: A Love Story should take in $5 million by Monday. I don’t really care – after what he did to Charlton Heston!

It looks like Fame won’t be living forever as it dropped almost 60% this weekend, giving the film a $16 million total.

The Informant was next after taking about $4 million over the weekend. Steven Soderbergh and Matt Damon should be happy.

Love Happens banked another $2.6 million for a $18.5 million total. It appears that Aaron Eckhart just isn’t a bankable leading man.

Movie News

1. Josh Brolin has replaced Sean Penn in Universal Pictures’ Cartel. The Asger Leth-directed film begins shooting Mexico City in January.

“Brolin will play a man on a mission to protect his son after his wife is brutally murdered in the gritty world of Mexican drug cartels.”

I can’t say that I’m a fan of Penn’s so there’s now a chance that this film will get my hard earned coin.

Penn quit the film to spend more time with his family.

Brolin will next be seen alongside Transformers stars Megan Fox and Shia LaBeouf. Barbra Streisand’s stepson will feature alongside Fox in Jonah Hex and LaBeouf in Wall Street 2.

2. Jessica Alba will join Ben Stiller and Robert De Niro in the second sequel to Meet the Parents.

The film, which may or may not be titled Little Fockers, will be directed by Paul Weitz. Weitz replaces Jay Roach at the helm.

One can only assume that Alba will play some sort of eye candy that causes problems to Stiller’s relationship with Teri Polo. Cue many shots of Alba’s butt.

3. Daniel Dae Kim and Michael Kelly have been cast in George Nolfi’s adaptation of Phillip K Dick’s The Adjustment Bureau.

“The story, which Nolfi adapted from a Philip K. Dick short story, centers on a congressman (Matt Damon), on the rise in politics, who meets a beautiful ballet dancer (Emily Blunt) only to discover that a strange organization is keeping them apart.”

Damon previously almost grabbed a Dick role in Steven Spielberg’s Minority Report only to be replaced by Colin Farrell.

I just realized how bad that last sentence sounds. I didn’t mean for it to sound smutty. Honest.

4. Peter Sarsgaard has joined the cast of Tom Cruise and Cameron’s Untitled Wichita Project. According to Sarsgaard, he will play Cruise’s “foil” in the James Mangold (3.10 To Yuma) directed comedy-action film.

One can only assume that Sarsgaard will play the bad guy. It’s not like he’s been type-cast or anything.

5. Martin Sheen, James Nesbitt and Deborah Kara Unger will star in Emilio Estevez’s The Way.

“It tells the story of Tom Avery, played by Sheen, a Californian ophthalmologist who travels to France to reclaim the body of his estranged son, who died in a storm in the Pyrenees, at one of the startpoints of the Camino de Santiago.”

In case you don’t know, Martin Sheen is Estevez’s dad (Sheen’s real name is Ramon Estevez. Charlie Sheen is also known as Carlos.)

Who says that nepotism is dead?

  1. Having Alba cast in Little Fockers is just another reason for me not to see that film. But, I do like that picture of Alba, and Cameron though.
